The Term "Over-singing" Personally, i dont believe in the term Oversinging..
the concept of "singing too much", or simply overdoing the singing
I think someone can sing too much on a song not fit for dramatic singing but to "oversing" in general,i dont believe their is a barameter when it comes to singing

Oversinging to me is when someone does certain runs or notes just for the purpose of showing off. It doesn't help to convey a certain emotion or help the song itself. IMO, The best singers, know when to pull back and when to gun it. although i feel as i just restated what FP said.... lol. [Edited 9/5/11 20:34pm]

Would you care to give an example? 2012: The Queen Returns

of oversinging?
One example: Christina Aguilera....
I think she's got a good voice, but too often she tries to do too much when its not necessary. its just "i don't need to do this for any reason other than the fact that i can". soul isn't 50 runs in a song.
Its like when i watch a guitarist do a solo with 100 notes per minute... its not necessary nor does it help the song. its just showing off.

Patti LaBelle would be the definition of that term.

I know I like Aguilera I think she is the best vocalist of her generation. But I agree.
The funny part about oversinging though it seems that people applaud singers WHO over sing for showing off when its VERY annoying

I think Christina walks a fine line with over-singing, some of her songs give me chills some songs and especially live performances are more 2012: The Queen Returns

I think one aspect of over-singing is when singers don't use dynamics properly/enough. It's not a particularly egregious example considering the source, but I think of Beyonce singing Ooh Child with Cyndi Lauper. It starts out all well and good, really beautiful actually, and then all of a sudden toward the end Beyonce is just like "OOOOH CHILD THINGS ARE GONNA GET EASIEEEEEEEEERR!!!!" She then continues in that vein until the end of the song. She made no attempt at an appropriate buildup, and it wasn't even really necessary for her to belt it out like that -- Oooh Child is simply NOT a belting song, and I felt like Beyonce took away a lot of the beauty with how she sang at the end. The emotion is in the gentleness and restraint, in the lullaby-like quality of the song. It does take voice control and practice to sing softly, and should be valued as highly as being able to belt it out. I do think Beyonce is talented and I'm not trying to hate, but if she would learn voice control she'd be on a whole new level. And I see all of your creations as one perfect complex
No one less beautiful Or more special than the next

"Oversinging" is a term "mainstreamers" made up because they don't understand R&B riffs outside of pop music (unless a white singer does it, then its genius) and the gospel and church roots they came from. It is popularized by know-nothing smart asses who are too smug and arrogant to admit that they don't know enough about a certain genre of music to properly critique it (coughcoughsimoncowellcough). Funny thing is, when it comes to other ethnic cultures, you never hear terms like that. Nobody ever says things like that about Japanese artists, Indian artists, African artists - its only R&B artists or pop artists with R&B roots.

I only think someone is over-singing if they either don't have the chops to justify it, or they are not moving me emotionally.
But Patti Labelle does as many gymnastics as anyone and Stevie Wonder certainly helped inspire a generation of over-singers, and yet both of them are among the best singers I've ever heard. They are not over singing, they are singing over level of most others.
Same with guitar players. Steve Vai is awesome to me because his music is interesting and passionate, not because he plays a million miles an hour (which is merely impressive) My Legacy
