As a kid I didn't tune into Live Aid. Years later when I seen this performance Queen literally rocked that stage Freddie Mercury has to be one of the greatest frontmans. This is 2011 and I haven't seen anyone command the stage like he did.

RIP

Yeah...this performance was stunning. Whole festival.....all those bands.......and Queen OWNED 'em all in a mere 21 minute set.

It was later said by many to be (perhaps) the greatest single live gig EVER.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/h...420308.stm

The following year (also at Wembley, again in front of over 70,000 fans), IMO they tore it up even HARDER.

The stage presence, the charisma, the nearly perfect setlist, the venue, the crowd, the band...and the best front man in rock history. I SO WISH I could been at one of these shows.

I've always loved the crowd roar that goes off as Freddie steps out to command the troops @ 1:25. EPIC show...for real.

It sure is, and its a lost art that really hasnt been done since. I did love at the Tribute Concert EXTREME totally re-did this set basically to show what Queen were about. And also as someone that woke up that early Saturday morning as a kid and was glued to that set all the way through, even though there were many bands i didnt really know their music. the thing that still strikes me is how this event just happend, there was no HYPE, your performance was your HYPE, and that came after you did not before, which is the art form of today, talk shit before U do anything. Also i remember QUEEN at first not being all prepped for this event, at first they werent doing it, their tour for the "Works" was over, freddie was solo, but Geldof said "tell the old fa**ot that its the biggest audience ever" and Queen rose to the occasion, no soundcheck as Brian May said, we just showed up and plugged in, Freddie knew this was Global, he knew this would be MOST likely his biggest audience ever and he owned it! and to this day, it remains famous for its Performance and nothing else!

U2 became a household name that day as well, and they only did 2 songs.

Back in '82, there was so much disinterest in seeing Queen in the US, that a lot of people regretted not going to see them once the Live Aid thing happened. Hot Space and The Game have great moments, but they're not great Queen albums. "Highlander" had its cult following though, and it's a given Freddie in the late 80s was not up for touring, even though we had no clue what was going on and he looked okay... but when Innuendo came out, he did a radio tour, a couple of videos, and we pretty much knew he wasn't doing well.

The cool thing about the DVDs is that even if you watched and videotaped the concert, some of the channels like MTV didn't show everything, and they didn't do the tape replay the way they did with Live 8. There's a lot of missed performances, but you still have to find the Led Zep performance elsewhere. It's easy enough to find. Page and Plant said it was a horrible performance, and decided instead to use the sales from the Unplugged/Unledded DVD towards Geldof's cause.

I like Pink's version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" cover because she does the whole song where Queen used the tape recording.. and the Muppets, too. But my favorite live videos are Hyde Park and the Rainbow from the mid 70s, and the pizza oven light shows from the late 70s. They've released a fair share of the 80s live performances, but nothing from the 70s era.

They should release Rock for Kampuchea on DVD. They filmed the entire performances, and it's one that should be released. The Clash, The Who, McCartney, Robert Plant, Pretenders, Elvis Costello.

But the later stuff with the synths that came out makes people forget how heavy their first albums were. Maybe they'd be labelled "prog rock" because of all the witches, fairies, and ogres they wrote about. No one talks about them rivaling Led Zep as a band, but there's times Brian May has played rings around Jimmy Page, and Roger Taylor's falsettos with Freddie's voice were insane... and he's playing on drums! All of them wrote a hit song, too.

Not a bad song up to "The Game".

My only issue with the DVD's and sure maybe its nitpicking, but some artists got cut out totally which wasnt cool, mainly the DVD company and their labels couldnt work out their rights to music etc.. Rick Springfield was one of those, RCA owns some of his old stuff still and wouldnt allow it, but he had a great set on the Phillie Stage.
