Bobby Rush (from Vainandy's neck of the woods)

A man of extremes...

...The Juke Joint & The Church

Both clips are from the "Road To Memphis" segment of the Martin Scorcese produced documentary The Blues.

I like some of Bobby's work. He's just not that great of a singer, but he is entertaining as hell.

I remember back around 1983, there was a new place that opened called The Jackson Entertainment Center. The place was short lived but right after it opened, Bobby Rush performed outside in the back lot of the place and one of the local TV stations aired it late one Saturday night. This was back in the days when local TV was great and would fill air time with entertaining things when they weren't airing national shows. In other words, the days before those stupid infomercials.

Anyway, Bobby Rush was on TV performing "Wearing It Out"....."I be workin', I be wearin' it out"....I was on one couch and my grandmother was on the other couch. The next thing I knew, my grandmother said...."I'll be glad when Satan goes off of that TV". falloff

Now that's funny. smile

The keyboard player in the first clip, Paul Brown is a friend.
He's been with Bobby on and off for some time.

Bobby calls him out in this version of...

...I Ain't Studdin' You recorded at the Ground Zero Club in Clarksdale.

Paul's also done a lot of work with Ann Peebles.

LOL I think I remember that from the Martin Scorsese blues documentaries.

He's kind of awesome, but kind of laughable at the same time, the way he still seems to think it's 1975, and that he is just on the verge of being huge like BB King

There is a scene where he goes clothes shopping for a special occasion shake lol

and yet, it's still somehow incredibly refreshing to see people who just don't seem to care what everyone else is doing now, and he is clearly good at his thing

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My impression of Bobby Rush is that he's just being himself.

You know, I pretty much learned a lot about how to play by being in soul-revue bands in the south.

This involved playing in similar places ("chitlin circuit" if you will) as shown in Bobby's video. So I get what he's doing.

The people that go to these kind of clubs are down-to-earth, salt of the earth, hard working everyday people.

They're spending their hard earned money and simply want to be entertained.

You can't go into venues like that with a pretentious attitude.
As if you're better than these people and think you really should be performing at Madison Square Garden somewhere.

Sure, Bobby Rush has totally mastered that scene. They are not there to see Maroon V. It's just that he seems to be a little tired and disappointed that he is not another BB or Buddy, but I think there is a reason he isn't.

Maybe it was mean of me to say "laughable" but I like a lot of people who I also laugh at. Partly because I'm not comfortable enough to be laughable myself!

From OUR neck of the woods, Andy! smile He's playing a street festival in Jackson TN this weekend and I ain't there. sad He's done this same festival for the last 3 years I know of and several before that. Can you say popular? He definitely has a following. He isn't looking his age either! Maybe it's those booty dancers he always has that keep him looking young! LOL
