The Man With The Horn was an anticipated release because folks were wondering two things. The first being, after a 6 year "retirement", if Miles could still play. The second, with the art-noise soundscapes of Dark Magus/Agharta/Pangaea as a last memory, what would Miles be up to now. The critics were probably hoping he'd regained his sanity and would revert back to his 50s/60s style. But Miles being Miles, was playing different music for a different time. Just like he'd always done. The albums got progressively better as his chops returned. Some refer to this decade as his Marcus Miller Period, who's present on all but three of the albums (Decoy, You're Under Arrest and Aura). Reviews on Tutu were initially mixed. Marcus himself has stated that some people would tell him, "Man, you ruined Miles' career." or "Man, I love that album...". But he says the man himself told him, "Marcus, thank you for bringing me back". My sleepers in this group are Music from Siesta (movie soundtrack) and Aura (orchestral). i know it's only Wikipedia but it says Tutu to originally be a collaboration between Miles and Prince, is this true, I know Can i Play With U was recorded and meant for this album, but was the whole set supposed to be Prince? never heard that.

There's an account by Alan Leeds (from the book The Last Miles) of what could have actually transpired here: http://www.thelastmiles.c...-leeds.php
If anything, it sounds like a very good Marcus Miller album (which some critics didn't appreciate) as he produced the album and wrote all but two songs for it. George Duke produced the one tune he wrote for the album.

Good thread.
I'll pick Decoy, BUT I have to say I haven't heard many of these in years. That opinion could change if I listened to all of them in a row now.

I'd go with Aura. Miles felt very strongly about that one.
