MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO RELEASING NEW ALBUM, PREVIEWS NEW SINGLE

MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO RELEASING NEW ALBUM, PREVIEWS NEW SINGLEMe'shell Ndegeocello

In a press release, bass player Meshell Ndegeocello announced that she’s releasing a new album, titled ‘Weather,’ in November. A track, “Dirty World,” is available for download. Meshell Ndegeocello Releasing New Album, Previews New Single Picture

Considered the harbinger of the Neo-soul movement, Meshell Ndegeocello is releasing a new album, titledWeather, on November 8. For the moment, the bass player, who achieved mainstream success in the 1990s, has put up single “Dirty World” for fans to stream or download.

Meshell Ndegeocello -Dirty World by emn2

Weather was produced by Joe Henry, who has previously worked with Amy Mann, Solomon Burke, and Ani DiFranco, and will include collaborations with Chris Connelly and Benji Hughes. In addition to new music, Weather will feature Ndegeocello’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel.” With a mix of ballads and soulful takes, Weather, according to the press release, is described as: “A strikingly organic record, the album finds Meshell experimenting with the sparse, orchestral melodies paired with thoughtful lyrics, all performed by a band of fearsome musicians.”

Ndegeocello has 10 Grammy nominations under her belt and was one of the first artists singed to Madonna’s record label, Maverick. Over the years, she has perfected with Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, and Alanis Morissette.

Ndegeocello performs regularly, although a tour does not appear to be lined up yet for Weather. Earlier this year, she performed two dates of Prince covers in Oakland, Calif., and prior to the shows, she was interviewed by Oakland Local. When asked about her role in bringing Neo-soul artists like Maxwell and Erykah Badu to the mainstream, she said: “To me there is no Neo-Soul. Everyone is coming with their own voice and their own story to tell. That’s what I focus on. Those two artists have been a huge influence on me. It’s just pure camaraderie. I’ve done nothing yet, except that I have some children and I try to do the best with them. I’ve spearheaded nothing. I feel that I’m just a continuation of the black experience, of people of color experience making music, and I hope to continue to do that.”

It will be interesting to see how this new CD sounds since Meshell has been performing Prince songs of late and more recently she did a show of Gil Scott Heron covers. I wonder if those sessions will influence her output this time around. Whatever she comes up with it's sure to be fantastic in it's own right!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Meshell Ndegeocello – New Album “Weather” – Out November 8th via Naïve

Meshell Ndegeocello Announces New Record Weather

Out November 8th via Naïve

Hear Meshell’s Newest Track “Dirty World” HERE
(Feel Free to Post and Share)

This fall, Meshell Ndegeocello will return with her latest record Weather, out November 8th on Naïve in the U.S. Her ninth album in 20 years, Weather finds the eclectic songwriter expanding on her iconic style, a lush album of intimate songwriting. And in honor of the album’s release, Meshell has made “Dirty World” available for free download. Download the track HERE (feel free to post and share).

Produced by Grammy-winner Joe Henry (Aimee Mann, Solomon Burke, Ani DiFranco),Weather is the latest addition to Meshell’s diverse catalog. A strikingly organic record, the album finds Meshell experimenting with the sparse, orchestral melodies paired with thoughtful lyrics, all performed by a band of fearsome musicians. The album opens with the title track “Weather,” a spacey, soulful groove that sets the stage for the rest of the record. Tracks like “Oysters” and her cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel” find Meshell constructing hushed ballads, centered around mournful piano. These tracks are juxtaposed with Meshell’s defiant, soulful stomps on songs like “Rapid Fire” and “Dirty World.” The album also features all-star collaborations with the likes of Chris Connelly (ex-Revolting Cocks, Ministry), Benji Hughes, and Joe Henry.

Born Michelle Johnson in Berlin, Meshell Ndegeocello has spent that last twenty years forging a unique career that’s as distinct as it is critically celebrated. Arriving in New York in the early ’90s with a few bedroom demos and her bass, Meshell quickly struck out on her own, joining The Black Rock Coalition and eventually signing to Madonna’s newly minted Maverick Records. Her politically charged, sexually rebellious music crossed boundaries and norms, all while incorporating a bit of everything into her sound, including hip hop, rock, R&B, new wave, go-go and punk. Her neo-soul anthem “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)” topped the charts, and cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night,” performed with John Mellancamp, became a ’90s classic. Quickly developing into a musician’s musician, Meshell has shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston, Chaka Khan, and more.

I've been thinking the same thing. Should be interesting to hear if there'll be a more full-on funk influence. I find the bassline of "Dirty World" more accessible in that vein than much of her recent stuff.

I also hope Deantoni Parks is playing drums on this latest joint. nod

Yes, I was a hardcore Meshell fan for her first few albums and I love Cookie, But she went in a different direction, I couldn't get with it. I never missed her live in Chicago until a few years ago, when she gave one of the most sullen, uninspired performances I have ever paid to see. I haven't been moved by her recent stuff and the track that was posted a few days ago started out promising with the bassline, but then fell flat for me. I hope the album is better.

This dude needs to let Kudu fans know what's up with that group! They opened for Meshell last year at the Highline in NYC and did some new tracks then they just fell off the map and never resurfaced.

If there is such a person as an "heir" to The Sound (James > Jimi/Sly/Stevie > Shuggie > Prince) (or of course, whatever other variation one can name) Me'Shell is it.

Bless her for her brilliance.

I understand why you'd feel that way, b/n, but I really enjoyed Comfort Woman and The World Has Made Me The Man of My Dreams. Devil's Halo is truly an "eye of beholder" thing.

As for her live gig, I missed that one, but heck, everybody has an off day.

i have seen her live quite a few times - she is an emotional performer. there seems to be no predictability when it come to her shows, which i find refreshing. i remember i told a friend "she's a soul singer, kinda like sade" then we went to the show and it was a guitar-driven screamfest featuring mainly songs like blood on the curb and slaughter.

that being said, reading that joe henry is producing this project has me moist. "wasted time" is one of my favorite me'shell tunes and i hope for another duet. smile

bring on november!! any word on label, promo, management etc? website?

Although the hooks on "White Girl" (Devils' Halo) and "Lovely Lovely" (TWHMMTMOMD) are killer.
