Does this show illegal downloads too? Just sales right?

Just purchases. I think what also gets lost in all this is the downward spiral of all forms of music, whether it was album to tape or tape to cd, there was compensation in those changes, Digital hasnt taken up the losses in the cd % and the elimination of Cassette and even the resurgence of Vinyl.

Cassettes haven't been eliminated. As I mentioned on the 1st page of this thread, Malaco albums are still released on cassette. I still see blank cassettes in Walgreens too.

Yeah im leaning more in your way, i clearly have more music now because of digital and its all over place, but i kind of few it has "cable tv" 57 channels and nothing on as Bruce Springsteen sang, it s kind of that philosphy. Im listening alot more to things i probably never would have bought.

Digital lovers will demonize your thinking as OLD, but im and i hear you saying the same, we are talking as music lovers and the preservation of it, MORE is not necessarily GOOD, the two dont always equate. My issue with digital is because now it depends on your patience, your computer speed and alot of other things against walking into a store and looking for what you want. A very interesting quote from INXS frontman JD FORTUNE, about the music experience, was saying that "the mystery is gone, the finding of product is gone, you used to pick up a record, this giant piece of work, you opened you read the notes learned about it and how it happend, now u get a 1/2 inch box picture, a click a 30 second preview and thats it, you have to impress with that, and it leads to a void"

yeahthat A lot of the fans of downloading keep on saying that it is democratic, free, we're all the same... blahblah I don't think so. As you say, there are many factors that make the experience different for some people, even more difficult. What if you simply don't like computers? Yes, there are people like that! Me!!! I don't like these thingys, and therefore I don't like to listen to music through them. And of course, it is not free: see your telephone bills.

Thats the thing, you are really alienating your own base that buys the most of music, granted everyone has a computer basically but to download you need top notch stuff and connections, you are dead if u are using your phone line at this point for any form of downloading, i had that years ago and it would take 4 hours for a track, i could have recorded in the studio quicker. ALSO a big issue and sorry but it is, if im paying 9.99 in the iTunes store, i dont want a "digital booklet" some dont even offer this, but even that booklet, now i have to take my time print the shit out, another expense is the ink to print it, whats with all this work to get a new album? So i understand the ease of having tracks right there, but even something like SPOTIFY which everyone was hyped about, is not worth the hype, so many tracks not available "in your region" use issues with taking up space on your phone and data time and just a ton of other issues with it. So all in all digital holds nothing special, sorry but it doesnt and we didnt even get into the "sound quality" thing which is a huge downgrade.

Lots of people do. They still sell cassette deck recorders in electronic stores.

not eliminated but not a force where you have much new stuff being offered on cassette, blanks are still out there but that too, its more like videotape at this point you have to dig in a store and find a few left, its not close to what was stocked

More people were buying music in the year 1999 than in any other time in our music history.

So who were the recording artists in 1999?:

http://tsort.info/music/yr1999.htm

BTW, Britney is #1 on THAT^ list. But the entire Top 100 is pretty much a preview of how the 2000's was going to be worse than the 1990's.

falloff I feel the same! In another thread I said that Madrid record stores are doing well enough given the current context. Well, that's because of me! lol And when I travel abroad, I try to contribute to the survival of other countries' record industries. I do what I can!!! lol

When I go on vacation , I always check out where I can find record stores. I'm going to London in 3 weeks, and I LOVE the city , one of the reasons is that there is some very nice recordstores there. cool

I also LOVE recordfairs. Here in Holland there is always twice in the year , the biggest recordfair of Europe in Utrecht!!! next one is in november, I can't wait! cool

That sounds good...

In Madrid there are also record fairs, but not that big.

Each year, rumours spread in the internet regarding which European city I'm travelling to and, therefore, which record industry I'm going to save next. lol However, lately I've been reducing my amount of purchases: I like to listen to music slowly and carefully, and I just haven't got time to listen to everything.

I'm so glad to see other people who understands the experience of loving music like I do. wink
