The Jacksons VICTORY LP Appreciation

[img:$uid]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/64/Jacksons-victory.jpg[/img:$uid]

This Jacksons LP gets criminally "excuse my French" shited on for various reasons and it doesn't deserve it.

It's the only album to feature all six brothers. The last album to feature Michael (and Marlon.) It's also the only Jacksons album to have an outside vocalist and it was Mr. Mick Jagger at that. It's also has the greatest cover of any Jacksons LP. I used to admire the artwork when I was younger.

This is the first album released after Michael's mega 1982 Thriller LP, and the Jacksons reunion on Motown 25 in 1983. It also kick started the Jacksons last tour in 1984.

After listening to this album for years, there is not one bad track on it. There may be some better than other, but this is not a terrible record as some claim it to be.

RESPECT

Torture , Wait , One More Chance (Good Track) , and The Hurt are my faves. Even we can change the world and Body I have soft spots for. But you can tell the album has a rushed feel to it . It's their worst compared to the other ones but I like it but not enough to listen to all the time. Honestly 2300 Jackson street I have never gave a proper listen to .

I wished they performed the victory songs on the victory tour. It still don't make no sense.

I dig the album for the most part with the exception of the

beginning of MJ's humanitarian songs of which most were good

but not Be Not Always.

I had a Right On! magazine in the 80's that talked about Victory before it was released. I think Rockwell was on the cover. It mentioned some song titles, and several of them didn't wind up being on the album. I don't remember exactly, but I think the article said around 30 songs had been recorded up to that point.

Apparantly Mike didn't want to rehearse anything new. I wonder why LOL. I really do believe Mike never wanted to do the album or tour. Still, Mike sounds great on "torture" and at least we got "tell me I'm not dreaming" live, which is also a great track that could of fitted on "Victory".

Theres still the Freddie Mercuy and Mike duet "victory" that supposedly exists LOL.

Heres one track that did get released, but by another artist LOL...

Co-written by Tito. Produced by Tito and Vassell Benford (who I know from the newjack era).

Mike's contributions to the album were quite mimimal and really quite weak by his standards. He does sound great on "torture" and I love him at the end of "wait", but "state of shock", whilst good, clearly sounds unfinished, and "be not always" is not one of Mike's best songs. I would love an instrumental of "the hurt" which was by Mike and Randy though. Lovely production on that one.

I think this album was just okay, compared to their others. The top songs for me are "Torture", "One More Chance", "The Hurt", "State of Shock" and "Wait". The rest I can give or take, but overall, this album was dated.

The one song that should've been included with this album is this...

As huge as the song was played on radio back in the day, this would've definitely given this LP better status had it been on Victory. This was just EPIC! It ended up on Jermaine's Dynamite LP. I think he and Michael did this during the Victory tour. music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-AiAC1Ftdw

Never liked Marlons "where do I stand" much (I got the cd which included a filler but fun bonus track "Everyday everynight"). I quite like the album though as its mostly mid-uptempo. Infact, "where do I stand" was the only ballad off it I think? Prefer Tito's co-write "Power".

Jackie brought it on "victory". "Torture" (with kathy Wakefield") and "Wait" (with a couple of the Toto guys) are my fav tracks from it. Love Mike's verse on "Torture". Steve Lukathers solo on "Wait" is straight fire too.

I just noticed on "2300 Jackson street" that in 1989 when it was released, Marlon was still on Capitol records. I wonder if he had a followup album in the vault somewhere?

Probably not, Randy did have some material cut in like 93. I belive Marlon had some solo material ready for release on Epic. They eve gave him an artist (Berrty Wright) and let him produce the whole album.

Ray Parker Jr on guitar duties on that track, not that you can barely hear him mind LOL. Jermaine's 1984 "Dynamite" album is a good companion piece to "vVctory".

As a whole, I probably prefer Jermaines album actually. The self produced "come to me (one way or another)" for example is a great track, as are the title track, "Tell me..." and "Take good care of my heart" etc...it's more consistant then "Victory". The highs are higher on "Victory", but they are too and far between.

Well why wasn't he on "2300 Jackson street" LOL. It states he was still at Capitol, so they hadn't ditched him that quick after 88's "Baby tonight". The brothers even playfully diss Marlon and Michael on the outtake "when I look at you" LOL. I've had it for years but someone has uploaded it....

If he hadn't done a whole album in 1989 I bet he at least started on it. I know Capitol went through big personel changes around 1990 so maybe Marlon got lost in the shuffle?

Yeah I agree! Jermaine's album was definitely better and it should've gotten more attention than it did. I just wish "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'" was featured on Victory or released as a single, as that would've been the song that helped the LP skyrocket to higher levels. But, it is what it is! Record labels are just suckas, for real!

LOL CBS let it be a dance single, but I think Mike's vocals were removed or something? I know CBS blocked Arista for using Mike's vocal or something like that:-x . I bet with a video and proper promotion and no CBS blocking them Jermaine would of had a big pop hit. Infact I know it would of been a big hit LOL, and Iam often wrong on such things.

LOL I know that, but if he was dropped by Capitol by 1989 then why wouldn't he rejoin the group? I think he didn't want to rejoin for either reasons of pride (they are brothers afterall) or because he was still working with Capital on another album that never got to see the light of day.

Check the Mike and Marlon diss around 2:52 mark. Took me a few listens to notice that one. I think Iam the only one sad enough to notice lol

He wanted to be on his own, he was on the title track so it was no beef, and that record label stuff was hot garbage. Jackie, Jermaine and Randy all released records that year for Polygram, Arista and A&M records. Tito I guess was the only onw without an outside project.

Jackies "be the one" was overlooked at the time unfortunately. Robert Brookins gave Jackie a good sound to suit his voice.

I feel ya. I don't think he wanted to record another album. I want to hear what he would have released in the early 80s though. With me, Baby Tonight is cool, but it sounds very dated too me. Compared to Jackie and Randy's LP in the late 80s, Marlon's comes dead last. Too me he had three strong cuts, the title song, "Lovely Eyes" and "Where Do I Stand." All the other tracks are way below those three, even the second single "Baby Tonight." His production for Betty Wright and Barry White and Janet in the early parts of the 80s were way better than what he gave us on Baby Tonight.

Outtakes

 • "There Must Be More to Life Than This" (Freddie Mercury) - (Two versions, a Jackson solo cut with Freddie Mercury at the Piano and a version sung by Jackson and Freddie Mercury)
 • "Doing Dirty" (Michael Jackson, Marlon Jackson)
 • "Far Far Away" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Power" (Jackie Jackson)
 • "Bad Company" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Pyramid Girl" (Michael Jackson) - (Early version of "Liberian Girl" by Michael Jackson, later recorded for his Bad album and released as a single)
 • "Nona" (Jackie Jackson)
 • "State Of Shock" (Michael Jackson, Randy Hansen) - (Demo version of the song of the same name, but recorded with Freddie Mercury instead of Mick Jagger )
 • "Born to Love" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Still in Love with You" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Tender" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Buffalo Bill" (Michael Jackson)
 • "Where Do I Stand" (Marlon Jackson)

I bet the outtakes are way stronger than the records on the actual album
