Soul legend Bobby Womack is to hand over the profits from the single he recorded with Teena Marie weeks before she died last year (10) to the singer's daughter.

The Across 110th Street hitmaker recorded a cover of Billy Preston's duet With You I'm Born Again with Teena Marie for his long-awaited new album Living in The House of Blues - and now he's planning to give the proceeds from sales of the song to her 20-year-old daughter Alia Rose.

Womack tells WENN, "I'd just come from Europe and they told me 'Teena Marie has passed,' and I said, 'You've got to be joking me...'

"I called her daughter. She didn't know me but I knew Teena Marie, loved her to death; that was her heart. I told her, 'I cut a single with your mom... about three or four weeks ago, I'll send you the tape.'

"She called me back in tears and said, 'It's the greatest song I've heard. I've never heard my mother that way...' I told her, 'Everything that comes from this vocal goes directly to you. Get your manager to draw up the contract. I don't even want to see the money. I know it would make your mom proud that I took it to this.'"

The track will be released at the end of September (11).

Teena Marie died on 26 December (10). She was 54.

Womack's comeback album also features collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and rapper Snoop Dogg.

This will be a good way to show my support for Teena's beautiful daughter.

This is a nice gesture of Bobby. Still hard to grasp Teena is gone.

It may seem snarky to say " how soon we forget " but it's still sad to remember she's gone. That is a class move by Bobby, he gets my respect for that, so much so that I'll buy his album just to donate for the cause.

According to Teena Marie's best friend Mickey Boyce...this isn't a new recording, it's from almost 30 years ago!! He's trying to get publicity by giving proceeds to Alia. Whatever the case may be...I haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure I'll love it!

Bobby Womack hasn't sold an album here in America in years! His last couple of albums that actually charted barely did so. It's not like Teena's daughter is going to come into a windfall.

True, but she'll at least be able to buy a new couch cover.

I can't wait to hear this!! I love Teena and Bobby...can't imagine them together though!

as soon as i heard the title i knew it was a cover of the Billy Preston Syreeta Wright song... The song was original released in 79... Still a beautiful track

I wouldn't be so sure about that negative remark. Teena's fans(including me) are waiting for it. A lot of people care about her daughter to. People are so negative on this site. They must have miserable lifes. Plus U talking about a dead artist legacy to. How can U sleep @ night?

Its a kind gesture and as long as Teena's daughter has enough money to care for herself then I don't care about any Bobby publicity or how old the song is or who sang it first. Just kick some funds in that girl's direction.

Hear the song now! I have found a radio show of David Nathan's where he lists With You I'm Born Again as a track he will be playing. I am having a great time listening to the Sweet Inspirations and Myrna Smith who are featured in the first half of the show as tribute to Myrna's passing. Just can't figure out how to fast forward to the new cut. I think I love them.
