MTV VMAs: Lady Gaga's Joe Calderone is theatrics gone wrong

Lady Gaga as Joe Calderone with Brian May

Lady Gaga opened the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with a Broadway-inspired bit that wasn't the surprise producers tipped, as Gaga's career is littered with theatrics. More often than not, she's skirted the line between entertainment and controversy, but her cross-dressing bit as "Joe Calderone" was as tired and worn-out as the gratuitous guitar solos that clutter "You and I."

The only line Gaga crossed with her VMA opening was the one that separated excess from eye-rolling. Her Calderone character came off as little more than an extra from "The Outsiders," or maybe she was just referencing MTV's "Jersey Shore," strutting around the stage with cigarette in hand and a tension-less monologue that was about nothing more than Gaga herself. "What's with the hair? At first it was sexy and now I'm just confused," Gaga as Calderone said to forced laughter, likely echoing many-a-viewer's thoughts.

It got worse, though, as Gaga launched into "You and I," a bloated rock ballad that began with her at the piano and ended with her tripping around the stage as Queen's Brian May poured on out-of-date, second-rate solos. But hey, it went over well with some, as Dave Grohl, who knows a little something about arena-rock posing, stood and cheered at May's appearance.

see video: http://latimesblogs.latim...rong-.html

what was she thinking? eek

I didn't watch the show, but I have viewed several highlights from the event.
My favorite clip so far is when a fan comes on from the back of the stage
during Jay Z and Kayne's performance
and the body guard rushes, jumps on the stage, running on
the side of J and Kayne while they are performing to get to the fan.
Jay Z stops rapping and turns around watching the bodyguard grabbing the fan,
but to see Jay Z 's facial expression eek and body language was priceless.
Kayne was a professional he continued to perform during the whole
thing not stopping a beat, he was aware what was going on
behind him,but no monkey was going to stop his show. Kayne lol

A few friend and I were at that first performance and while she did sing to a the track and the background vocals were pre-recorded, she was not lip-syncing. I'd put money it...

You said it! I was coming back from VA to NY with some friends of mine who are addicted to their smart phones. My friend in VA who refuses to get a cell phone, get on twitter, or get on facebook and who knows roads & directions like the back of his hand was willing to give them verbal directions back to NY. They said know we'll just use our GPS. The result, a normally 6 hr car ride turned into a 10 hour car ride because their stupid device kept taking them off course. What's worse they could not admit that their GPS app was useless and were too proud to stop & ask for direction. We finally get to Brooklyn and instead of asking me "Ok which way do we go?" They still relied on that freaking app, so I finally just starting blurting out the directions out of frustration "go straight, make a left at the next block, make another left, then stop! I think I pissed them off, but I didn't care. All of this "technology" has made people obnoxious, lazy, stupid, thoughtless, mean, inconsiderate & annoying. I refuse to let anyone make me feel like an outcast for not reveling in all of this tech minutia. I stand my fucking ground, all my friends know you have to CALL me, no texting. This tech crap would be cool if people were not so willing to give up control of their lives, the use of their brains, their privacy, and all types of social graces....for $100 a month no less.

... No they're not...

You can basically hear in the first track that her rhythm was slightly off and made a few mistakes, also shes a tad off key.

The second video is more polished, less rhythm discrepancies,

Se's in key here

I'm no Beyonce sympathizer, but I'm not gonna take away anything from her

I have to admit I like texting a lot though it depends who I'm talking to and what it's about. I'm always very awkward on the telephone though more open in text, internet and in person so it's more comfortable for me. But yeah, that does sound frustrating and it sucks being ignored like that, my ex was an asshole to me for that, and the one time I was a tiny bit unsure about somewhere we were going but I resolved it very quickly, he was sooo mad despite the fact we didn't even get lost! I think it was jealousy.

I agree with you here. I don't think she's lipsyncing at alll. I think some people are going too far to try to criticize her. You have to give her some credit shrug.

I don't know if Beyonce lip synched or not, but I enjoyed her performance and "Love On Top" is probably my fave song on "4". It's a great song.

Love On Top is the best song off 4, I love it so much. I don't like the album very much and don't plan on buying it. I guess the jacket she wore had a 1999 era vibe to it, though I mostly thought of Jackson 5

lets not act like that beyonce performances was just so amazing. It was alright. It look a little cabaret.

and she could be using prerecorded live vocals. So while they are not studio vocals, they are still not live while she is performing.

the dancing was so cheesy, and i honestly thought that song was from an old Destiny's child record. Lady gaga was in the audience looking so confused lol lol that was freaking hilarious

I agree to even though I still think the song is okay but the thing that the media does with Beyonce that takes away from that is they overrate it or they'll hype it up with any of her performances when its really JUST average or just a "good" performance nothing spetacular amazing or that should be compared to another legend. I guess since music is so bad now people will over hype anything. I thought Adele had the best performance.

didn't you say it was depressing that people don't think for themselves?????

you were okay when everyone agreed with your opinions on that performance. Now that someone doesn't agree you take offense.

The sequin jacket, the old motown moves and over the top facial expressions. It was freaking hilarious to see the look on lady gagas face. Not to mention someone posted earlier a review of the MTV awards and they said her performance was lackluster.

I think if people really thought that performances was the best, then her plan (showing off her pregnant belly) worked. Just like you think people who don't like the performance make a big effort to dislike her. wink

I remember the first time she performed solo on the MTV awards, now that was the best of that show.

I never said it was the best of that show. I didn't like the performance that much either, as I said before. I don't even understand, you are taking my posts way out of context. I am not offended whatsoever. I just feel like you are trying to rag on her, when we're just talking about what makes her not so great. I do not see how she lip synced at all, if you listen really closely you can hear tiny parts that are out of key.

I do think it's depressing that people don't think for themselves. I don't even understand what that has to do with anything. Just because I disagreed with you I don't think for myself? confuse
