While she usually does sing live, I think the producers did not want her to extend herself....That's the only thing I can think of.

MTV VMAs: Lady Gaga's Joe Calderone is theatrics gone wrong
August 28, 2011 | 6:33 pm

Lady Gaga opened the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with a Broadway-inspired bit that wasn't the surprise producers tipped, as Gaga's career is littered with theatrics. More often than not, she's skirted the line between entertainment and controversy, but her cross-dressing bit as "Joe Calderone" was as tired and worn-out as the gratuitous guitar solos that clutter "You and I."

The only line Gaga crossed with her VMA opening was the one that separated excess from eye-rolling. Her Calderone character came off as little more than an extra from "The Outsiders," or maybe she was just referencing MTV's "Jersey Shore," strutting around the stage with cigarette in hand and a tension-less monologue that was about nothing more than Gaga herself. "What's with the hair? At first it was sexy and now I'm just confused," Gaga as Calderone said to forced laughter, likely echoing many-a-viewer's thoughts.

It got worse, though, as Gaga launched into "You and I," a bloated rock ballad that began with her at the piano and ended with her tripping around the stage as Queen's Brian May poured on out-of-date, second-rate solos. But hey, it went over well with some, as Dave Grohl, who knows a little something about arena-rock posing, stood and cheered at May's appearance.

Who cares what he thinks? At the end of the day, everyone will forget all that happened in the show except for Gaga's theatrics. Like he just proved, everyone is going to be talking about Gaga tomorrow.

Thats what i just said to my best friend.and he asked who was she and I was like I don't know.... lol lol then said she couldn't sing.

I knew that girl was a front. Sometimes it only takes the simple songs to see who can really sing. lol

Oh please Jessie J CAN sing! Her "No Scrubs" wasn't anything special but so what, not even TLC can do it justice, which proves it's probably more the fault of the song then Jessie. Anyone who saw her tear it up on Saturday Night Live knows she can sing.

Please, the only thing anyone is gonna be talking bout the VMA's tomorrow is Beyonce being with child. No one is gonna be talking bout gaga and whatever she was trying to "create".

Performances:

LADY GAGA - YOÜ AND I Okay, I'm really not a GaGa fan at all. In fact, there's something about her I really don't like. But, I must say, I gained some respect for her after that performance. I thought it was really great and it took a lot of courage. I love her as a guy! It was so cool. I thought the monologue was very interesting and creative. I thought it was very fascinating, one of the most creative things she's done (while keeping it simple and not at all flashy, and I tend to believe that the most creative ideas are simple/not over the top, unlike what she usually does). I like seeing peoples' reactions to her. Bieber looked pissed giggle. Britney looked amazed. People were confused and shocked, which is what is so great about her performance. True art doesn't need forced shock value, yet is shocking all on it's own. She actually did that quite nicely. I must say, however, I'm not really a fan of the song. I wouldn't put it on my ipod or anything. I really liked when Brian May came out. He looked great and I was so glad to see him. It's great to see him and GaGa working together biggrin. I thought the dancing part was kind of unnecessary but okay. Dance choreography doesn't really fit well with this song. Kind of reminded me of a 'broadway-type' thing, which I guess is what she was going for. I could really see myself rooting for her after this.

Overall: 4.3/5

KANYE WEST AND JAY Z - OTIS I mean, it was fine. I don't know about you guys, but I don't exactly know what to say about this. They're rappers shrug. They did fine. To me it was just two of them rapping. I don't know how good is good for a rapper/hip hop artist when it comes to performances. I have respect for both Kanye and Jayz. I think they're both really talented. I liked how the stage lit up and the American flag was a nice touch. I liked the 'scream' part as well. I liked that they kept it short and simple and to the point. I can't say I'm incredibly impressed, however. But I did like to see them together. I always thought they'd be a great team.

Overall: 3.7/5

PITBULL/NEYO - GIVE ME EVERYTHING Blaaaaaahhhhhhh. This was a filler performance. I have no care in the world for that one. I hear this song on the radio all the time so at this point that song is extremely irritating. It was nothing good. Pitbull was Pitbull, Neyo was Neyo. They never bring anything special to the table. Pitbull was just standing and rapping. He's not that great of a rapper, anyways. And Neyo didn't dance or anything! He just stood there and sung. The only people dancing was all those girls. And again, it wasn't very entertaining. It was real shitty. The only thing I liked were the light effects, but they can't get credit for that either lol. I don't know whuddafuk was up with that lady singing. Who was she? She looked like some girl they just found somewhere on the street shrug. She looked awkward as hell, trying to dance and look sexy. She was a really crappy singer, too.

Overall: 0.8/5 for effort

CHRIS BROWN - YEAH 3X/PROTECT YA NECK/TEEN SPIRIT/BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE Pleasantly surprised!! I actually really liked it. I thought it was great. At first, I was like whatever because I don't like his song Yeah 3x and I really didn't like those dresses that his dancers wore. But it got increasingly good. The choreography was amazing. The stage complimented the performance tremendously, of course. I don't like when he tries to do the MJ thing, because I don't find that very original. Also, I feel like the Nirvana part was kind of unnecessary, but other than that I don't really have much to complain about. He did pretty good. I liked when he flew through the air and did flips. His dancers were also really great. His vocals were good; not great, but good and I liked them. And the performance was fun overall, which is why I liked it so much. A lot of people really liked it as well. Honestly, I really wasn't expecting much from him, but I think he delivered. He's not going to be iconic or anything, I don't think of him as that special, but he is talented and I did appreciate this performance.

Overall: 4.3/5

BRITNEY SPEARS TRIBUTE Lame.

Overall: whatever.

BEYONCÉ - LOVE ON TOP I don't really know what I was expecting from her. Her performance was fine. I liked the outfits and the simplicity of it. The song was okay, but I really wouldn't put it on my ipod or anything. But I'm dissapointed for a reason: like me and some orgers were talking about on the 1+1 video thread, she shows no real emotion. She has to scream to show any kind of emotion and I still feel nothing. I mean, by the end of the freakin' performance she was literally spazzing out and I wanted to poor some water in her face and make sure she was okay!! I don't like how she feels she needs to do that to express any type of emotion. I'm really dissapointed because she's so talented, and pretty, and she's a lovely woman but everything she does is bland because she doesn't really know how to connect. And if she did, this could have been jaw-dropping and amazing. Anyways, I liked how, in the end, she dropped her mic, ripped open her jacket and showed the world her baby bump heart. That was a sweet moment. It was cute and I really liked all the love she was getting from the audience, especially Kanye and Jayz and even Gaga. I thought that was really cool biggrin. I'm excited about her baby now.

Overall: 3.2/5

BRUNO MARS - AMY WINEHOUSE MEDLEY/VALERIE Favorite. I thought it was really sweet, not too over the top, but fun and cool and I feel like they were genuinely celebrating Amy. Bruno Mars is very talented. I thought this tribute was well done and I really appreciate it. It's perfect. The lights were done really nicely, her pictures were completely fitting, and the stage went really well with it all. I loved the jazz and the musicians, it was all very well done.

Overall: 4.8/5

YOUNG THE GIANT - MY BODY Don't know who they are, never heard of them. But I like them. It was a good song, I loved the lights, they were very fitting. The runway and the people. It was good. There's not much to say about it though.

Overall: 4.0/5

LIL WAYNE - HOW TO LOVE/JOHN I really didn't like the autotuned voice. That was sooo unnecessary. Even if his voice was crappy, it's still better than autotune. It's so irritating. I honestly like the 'How to Love' song. It's a sweet song. And I liked his pants shrug. And he looked happy, which was really nice to see biggrin. But then when he took off that shirt I was just like stab. All went downhill from there. But still better than Pitbull and Neyo.

Overall: 2.0/5 for purple underpants

Awards:

BRITNEY SPEARS WINNING BEST POP VIDEO Thought she deserved it shrug. What can I say. It was honestly the best. Adele is great but she's not exactly a video queen (her video was nice, but it's not 'best pop video' material). Bruno's video was boring, Katy - boring. Pitbull - boring. bored. Not saying that Britney's video is incredibly amazing/top shelf. But yeah, she definitely deserved it more than all the nominees. Britney was really sweet - as always - while excepting her award. I enjoy seeing her, she looks happy.

FOO FIGHTERS WINNING BEST ROCK VIDEO Don't ask me. I don't care about any of the nominees lol. But good for them, for winning. They looked good and genuinely happy.

NICKI MINAJ WINNING BEST HIP HOP VIDEO Yeah, wasn't surprised. Nicki, of course she won. Hip hop videos for the most part aren't exactly the most entertaining/the best videos around. But Nicki kind of has an unfair advantage. She's not just a rapper, she's an 'entertainer' and she dresses in crazy outfits and is quite fun to watch (at times). So of course she has the most entertaining video. I appreciated seeing her so excited, like a little kid giggle. Most people are like "I wanna thank my family, God, my director blahblah. It was nice to see someone really genuinely surprised and excited!

KATY PERRY AND KANYE WEST WINNING BEST COLLABORATION Ehhh, I don't know. They didn't really do much together; Katy did a song with two versions. One with Kanye and one without. And Kanye appeared in her video, not even with her. He was in some weird-ass space pod. The song wasn't even that good. I don't think they should have won. I thought Nicki and Drake should have won. They have great chemistry together, they go really well with one another, they're both good rappers. I think they were without a doubt the best collaboration and they should have absolutely won, imo. But good for them, anyways.

Kanye seemed cool while accepting the award. Katy was just obnoxious. I wanted to throw my shoe at her but I knew that I would just break my computer pout.

JUSTIN BIEBER WINNING BEST MALE VIDEO Umm.. really?!?! For U Smile? I'm sorry, but Justin sucks. I don't know who should have won but I know that his was not it. The only reason he won is because twelve year old girls want to lick his face and Will.I.Am is stupid enough to believe he's the next Prince rolleyes.

LADY GAGA WINNING BEST FEMALE VIDEO Hm. I guess. I mean, I think it's kind of a tie between her and Beyoncé... then again, GaGa's was a bit more interesting... okay, yeah. Good choice that she won, but even then, Born This Way is not all the great in my opinion. But good for her for winning.

KATY PERRY WINNING VIDEO OF THE YEAR WTFFFFFF?!?!?!!?! I can't stand this woman. Really??!? Video of the year? disbelief ANYBODY ELSE COULD HAVE WON!!! She seems like a nice person but goddamn I was ready to jump through the screen and karate kick that fucking square off her head.

TYLER, THE CREATOR WINNING BEST NEW ARTIST I think Wiz Khalifa should have won. Whatever.

LADY GAGA WINNING BEST VIDEO WITH A MESSAGE Yeah, I guess.

BRITNEY SPEARS WINNING THE VANGUARD AWARD I'm glad for her! I think it's great. I love how GaGa wanted to kiss her. That was interesting giggle.

ETC:

STAGE I thought it was really great. I expected all the lights and effects because of last year, and I feel like the stage complimented all the performances really nicely. Well designed. A+

JOE JONAS BACKSTAGE BIT falloff

Entertainer

Beyonce lipped tonight and she has before. she's just good at it and people don't usually call her out on it. Weird that she would announce her pregnancy so publicly especially being so early. Attension seeking perhaps!

Gaga was good performing but her act got old fast and became annoying.

britney spears tributed was a mess. She deserved better. Gaga and Beyonce took up her halo and time.
