You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I thought pretty much all artist-started labels bombed; I had no idea Reprise was even Frank Sinatra's... eek .

Swan Song's biggest success apart from Led Zeppelin was Bad Company.

The Who started Track Records in 1966 & signed Jimi Hendrix as their first act. Also put out Thunderclap Newman & the Heartbreakers (Thunders not Petty).

Trent Reznor had his own which was acquired by Interscope when he signed. Fred Durst started his own label & did Puddle of Mudd.

Neil Young has Vapor Records which put out Tegan & Sara's first records.

Lots and lots of punk ones...

SST (Black Flag)

DiscChord (Minor Threat)

Alternative Tentacles (Dead Kennedys)

New Alliance (Minutemen)

Reflex (Husker Du)

Fat (NOFX)

Nitro (Offspring)

Epitaph (Bad Religion)

that's just the first ones off the top of my head... in a "DIY" scene you get a lot of owner/ artists.
