David Bowie's Toy

I've finally found the time to listen to David Bowie's lost album from 2001, Toy, which leaked some months ago.

Being a Bowie enthusiast for many years, I'm still amazed by the man. Some of the versions of his old stuff, such as London Boys, Let Me Sleep Beside You or In The Heat Of The Morning, are OK, but the album has awesome moments that can be placed side by side with Bowie's best material.

Uncle Floyd is, in my opinion, far better than the version which was published in Heathen (Slip Away), and is nostalgic and sad as can be. It was Bowie who said that the best songs are the ones that make you cry; if so, this is one of the bestest.

And I've rediscovered the wonderful new version of Conversation Piece, a moving tale of loneliness and alienation that set the thematic pace for many of Bowie's later works. The way he sings it in the new version is really amazing.

These are the two highs of the album to me. What do you think, Bowie fans in the org?

It was great to hear "new" material from him as he's been away for such a long time.

I haven't listened to these songs in a while, because I simply overplayed them at the time they leaked.

I think the versions of the two first tracks on "Heathen" are better than the early versions on "Toy", so I'm glad that he kept working on them. Those are among his best "late period" songs.

I don't agree with Uncle Floyd/Slip Away. The Heathen version seems a bit overproduced to me.

Anyway, Heathen was a great album, and also Reality. What a shame he left it there.

Bumping this just because I think Bowie is cool and should be at the top of the music section instead of wayyyyy at the bottom.

Yes I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the recordings. Of course some were already released as b/sides to the Heathen project! I just hope he comes out of retirement and delivers one more great album!!!

Yeah... I've always thought that the 70's belonged to Bowie, as the 80's to Prince. They are both so creative and influential, and reference points for their respective decades, that I hoped to find more Bowie fans in the org. confused
