Interesting thread.

I'd say:

1. Sly Stone - Thank You ( Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

2. Funkadelic - Get Off Your Ass & Jam

3. Blue - Joni Mitchell

4. Papa Got A Brand New Bag - James Brown

5. Are 'Friends' Electric? - Gary Numan

6. Maybe Your Baby - Stevie Wonder

7. Egyptian Song - Rufus FT. Chaka

8. Inside My Love - Minnie Riperton

9. Black Satin - Miles Davis

10. Burning of the Midnight Lamp - Jimi Hendrix

11. Happy House - Shuggie Otis

12. Sly Stone - If You Want Me To Stay

I could always hear a few bits here & there of these songs from Prince' music, esp the 85-86 period.

Are you asking what Prince songs artists should remake for a compilation inspired by his music or what songs by different artists we think influenced his music?

Sly Stone "Remember Who You Are". Sounds just like "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker.

I would add some Santana on there. Either 'Black Magic Woman' 'Samba Pa Ti' or 'Hope You're Feeling Better.'

I actually made a compilation like this quite a while ago and it comprised of the following songs:

1. Sex Machine - Sly & The Family Stone

2. I Met A Little Girl - Marvin Gaye
3. Licking Stick - James Brown
4. Do That Stuff - Parliament
5. I Believe In You - Graham Central Station
6. Sweet Little Girl - Stevie Wonder
7. Little Miss Lover - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
8. What Is Hip? - Tower Of Power
9. Can't Let Go - Earth Wind & Fire
10. She's Not There - Santana
11. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns - Joni Mitchell
12. Being With You - Smokey Robinson
13. Just Ease My Mind - Curtis Mayfield
14. Love Rollercoaster - Ohio Players
15. Funky Weekend - The Stylistics

I think that covers just about all of his influences. wink

I would try to throw some Beatles, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Parliament - Funkadelic in there too.

I'd probably include something from Joni's "Hissing of Summer Lawns", since I seem to remember an interview where he said that it was the last album he'd heard that he loved from start to finish. Or...something like that.

Also, I seem to remember Prince being quite fond of "Cloudbusting" by Kate Bush
Occupy Alphabet Street!
