I don't have an official source as a reference, but I always understood that Gladys Knight brought the Jacksons to Motown, and that Diana Ross was given the credit because she had more star-power at the time.
Gladys recommended them but Berry didn't wanna be bothered with them. This was in 1967.
Anyways, wasn't this about Ashford & Simpson?
And we know Diana wasn't gonna show up, she don't show up to funerals (Richard Pryor and Arne Naess were exceptions). You wouldn't either after you get booed while attending the funeral of an old friend and a former group mate...

I'm sure that is a horrible memory of Miss Ross if u nasty that will haunt her the rest of her life..........
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

That was real cold. They didn't boo and heckle Berry but Diana got harassed like she was Miss Jezebel. And if you believed reports she was acting all dramatic at the funeral as a means to "take the spotlight" but who knows if that's true or not.

Well in that book "Call her Miss Ross" written by M. Wilson. She worded it in a way that they blamed "Diane" for that person's death

Actually Mary wrote "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme". Gotta love Mary for trying to inject the "Dreamgirls" play into her own real life story. You mean J Randy Taraborelli.
Also I have to commend the fact that despite some rumors, nobody ever said anything in a book about Nick Ashford.

"I've got a lot to say about a great man," Simpson said.
"He was my soul mate. He was the man of my life," she said. "I'm going to miss my honey....I know he's looking down on us. I know he's happy."
dang....you just can't help but tear up
That is so true. Just as their love for one another was so palatable so too must be Valerie's grief. They were such an attractive couple and I don't think it was just because Nick was such a physically beautiful man that I loved looking at pictures of them. They brought out eachother's finer selves and the term "soulmates" doesn't have that smarmy feel to it when refering to these two.
Anyway this has been a great thread to read and thanks to all of you that posted interviews and songs.

This is so heartbreaking. *balling tears right now*
Nick's last birthday!
Oh My God
Wow, I'm watching this for the first time. Then just 3 months after his birthday...
Valerie must have known at the time that this was likely to be his last birthday. Though I'm really upset that I didn't even know that bar existed Uptown. But then again, this is a city that you can never completely know. Life is so precious: Here one moment, then gone the next. Those in attendance at this party must have been so glad they were there, to shower Nick with all the love he was due.

^ So he must've gotten sick right afterwards, which is understandable.
Anyway I always loved their relationship. I know for two people to be around each other for 50 years as they were growing up together in New York City that they always had a deep friendship that helped to make their marriage survive any odd. I'm sure they had their difficult years and there was rumors they had an open marriage (like Ossie & Ruby) but I think their loyalty is a reason they stayed married for 37 years and they should be as commended for that as they were in creating three seminal soundtracks to three generations of audiences.
Many great couples in history were not monogamous. It seems that the deep friendship you speak of is far more important to some couples then monogamy is. I also know of monogamous couples who have been together decades who are completely miserable.
