I'm probably the Org's biggest NJS fan... can't believe I'm just seeing this thread.
It's very difficult to pick my favorite NJS song. If I had to, I'd probably go with this one. At the very least, it's one of the more underrated gems from Teddy's catalog.
The dancing is still on point! "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

They played that remix on my local radio station back in '91, but I could never get a clean copy until that CD was released. I had most of the mixes on there, but it was still a great purchase.
I've always spoken up against the "dated" concept and new jack swing is a perfect example. To my ears, it sounds just as fresh and cool today as it did back then (although I've never stopped spinning it on a regular basis, so that may have something to do with it). To me it reminds me of my childhood, running around the yard while Guy or Keith was playing in the background. My brothers and sisters used to play that music around me so it was inescapable that I would be affected by it. Even got the fade that was the trend back in that period. I remembered wanting to purchase a S-Curl hair relaxer because Keith Sweat was supporting it. What did I know? I was 7, 8 years old.

I agree, it doesn't sound the least bit dated to me. I get just as excited when I hear certain NJS songs as I did when they first came out. Mostly because it's so danceable especially compared to the bullshit out now. When I hear those songs I know we finna get our groove on!

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Don't even get me started on the greatness of "Iesha"! Man, I will always love that song. Had to wait forever from their debut on Video Soul until the cassingle finally came out! "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I'll challenge you on that. From the first time I heard FF and their production in the early mid 80s I was sold. 1988 saw NJS come to fruition, and it blew its wad in 1991 and 1992 with the debut albums from Tevin, Boyz II Men, ABC, TLC, Jodeci, and the soundtks from Boyz In The Hood, New Jack City, Boomerang, and Mo Money! NAd them house oarties we used to have back then...yo ass had better be in shape to do all the New Jack dances. Be taking yo ass to the doctor for some oxygen and Ben Gay and shit if you ain't tight with it. People only claim remember the time the best NJS song because its Michaels. To be honest its one of my least favs. Ive's heard better.
Now this is the best NJS dance song! [Edited 8/23/11 11:12am]

I agree. And ironically enough its the least NJS track that Teddy did on the lp. Its more R&B than NJS. Hell Luther could have recorded his vocals over the same track and it would have worked great if you ask me. This has to be one of the most underrated NJS remixes. It still gets play in the clubs.

Some of the songs mentioned in this thread aren't "New Jack Swing". Some people are quick to label any dance-y R&B song from the late 80s/early 90s as being "New Jack Swing" even if they weren't. Not every uptempo song from that period was.

Post 1992 Teddy music was NOT new jack swing, that was his intepretation of hip-hop soul, so was the remix to "I Get Lonely" so I don't know if that qualifies.
This does though:

Well, I didn't pick that song because it's Michael's. I picked it because it's a contender to me. It's all opinion anyway.

Baby Be Mine by Blackstreet is for sure. That's proabbly the one exception for post 1992 Teddy. By that time he was heading more towards G-Funk... ....which I DID NOT like. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Yes, im a little perplexed by some of the postings. Like the Sheena Easton songs, weren't those just pop/dance records? How are folks defining New Jack Swing, other than the obvious Teddy Riley cuts? [Edited 8/23/11 17:51pm]

Yeah, but it's not like it's totally cut and dried. LaFace were definitely doing their version of NJS back then... it's kinda hard to argue against, say, "Don't Be Cruel" being given that label.
That being said, I've come to use the term New Jack Swing to refer specifically to Teddy-produced or -arranged projects and I prefer Swingbeat (the popular term in the UK) for the rest.
FWIW, I consider "Baby Be Mine" NJS, but nothing else from Blackstreet. Off the top of my head, I think "Right Here/Human Nature" was the final big NJS hit. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
