well based on my own personal favorite style of players...

Mike Campbell and Andy Summers

98% of the time i prefer players that play for the song like George Harrison did...

but for as for the more solo oriented players:

Santana, Clapton and Prince.

although I'm suprised no one mentioned Buddy Guy... eek

Brian Setzer is the best. I doubt there's another guitarist alive who plays so well. Even Buckethead can't rip up those crazy roots-rock riffs with the same tone, speed and accuracy as Setzer.

Buckethead is my number two. He's a shredder who isn't afraid to slow down or play genres that most shredders run away from. And because he is still relatively young he has a good chance of developing into the best as he gets older and keeps refining his already amazing technique.

I would put Prince at number three on the list. First, for his versatility across so many genres and styles. Second, for his ability to shred with restraint and confidence rather than just tapping out arpeggios. And finally, for his ability as a rhythm guitarist. He can stomp all over the stage busting out funk riffs with the timing of human metronome.

Buddy's definitely a strong contender so is Shuggie. nod I like Buckethead's guitar riffs too.

To answer this question I look for someone that has has a unique style, if not revolutionized at least influenced a lot of players. Of course there's a subjective side to it as well. I have to like the playing.

Here are some candidates:

Eddie Van Halen - After Hendrix I think Eddie is the one who have influenced most rock guitar players. I think he has got sloppy in later years and he has lost his edge but make no mistake, Eddie was a pioneer and a great player in the 70's and 80's. There's a lot more to Eddie's playing than tapping.

Yngwie Malmsteen pre acciednt in 1987 - When young Yngwie came on to the scene in the early 80's he was kind of the third step in the evolution of rock guitar (Hendrix -> Van Halen -> Malmsteen). His amazing technique and unique style and wonderful vibrato changed the perception of rock guitar. However Yngwie lost his touch and some of his clean technique after a near fatal car accident in 1987 which damaged his picking hand. If you want to hear Malmsteen listen to his Alcatrazz album or any of his first three solo albums. Otherwise don't bother...

Steve Vai - He has a unique style, great technique, very professional attitude and a lot of emotion. Nobody except Hendrix can make the guitar scream like Vai. The sounds he manages to create with the guitar is just awesome.

Richie Blackmore - Richie has a unique kind of staccato style of playing. His work with Deep Purple and Rainbow is legendary. He was one of the true heros of rock guitar in the 70's and he recorded a lot of memorable solos.

Brian May - I hesitated before I put Brian on this list but I finally thought he deserved to be on it. Brian's got such a unique style and I think his studio work in particular really stands out. When most rock guitarists in the 70's were stuck in playing pentatonics Brian really was before his time creating a lot of lovely melodies utilizing key changes and diatonic scales to change things up. His solos are always well thought out with a lot of interesting harmonies and twists.

There are a lot of other great rock players but the people above can't be denied. They've got such unique styles and they were pioneers.

i agree on this... even though a lot of people hate his playing The Edge can't be denied in terms of revolutionizing the way a guitar can be used as a tool. Personally i think he's underrated. Is he Jimi and Co? no... but he isn't supposed to be. When it comes to creating textures i don't think there are any that do it any better than The Edge. bring on the hate. wink

though there is no BEST since they all arent playing the same styles and songs, i really feel that Brian May i would take any day over others because his playing is flawless and so perfect and effortless, some say he lacks "soul" in his playing, but listen to all his solos, listen to things like "the Prophets Song" or "Bijou" or "Chinese Torture" or the solos on "Show must go on" and "was it all worth it" not to mention the early catalog "stone cold crazy" etc...

Great examples of good Brian May solos. And don't forget the classic Bohemian Rapsody.

May's tone is so unique, the note selection in his harmonies is just wonderful and I like the way he makes the guitar scream.

Another thing I love with certain guitarists when they bend is that that they can make the guitar sound like it is crying and screaming. Hendrix could do this, Vai and May also has this mastery of the instrument.

Phil Keaggy. The most comprehensively astounding guitarist I've ever seen.

Soul. Funk. Blues. Rock. Fingerstyle. Classical. New-age. The man is ridiculous.
