How is this her 1st? She was a drummer in the Breakfast Club before she went out on her own.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

As a solo performer (and taped)! lol

True she performed a little bit earlier than the video but this was taped and I can believe in front of cameras it's her first. Who'd imagine in 29 years we still hear from Mads today.

Great video, you can see she already loves to perform.

There's something I admire in the 1981-1985 Madonna... the driven Madonna, the hungry Madonna, the "live your life without fear" Madonna. Sure she's still somewhat of a driven person today but that drive is different than it was 30 years ago. I'm still amazed at the backstory of her early years (much like I am of Prince and Boy George).

Sometimes you can tell someone's going to be around for a long time. I think by '86-'87 it was safe to say she was here to stay. Her live shows became more elaborate every tour and demand to see her only grew.

Of course, things can derail a person, but look at the artists who are still here a decade later doing fine, and which ones have fallen by the wayside.

Yeah the True Blue period was like "I'm gonna be here whether you like it or not".

I love that arms-out and torso-twist move with the Matrix lean boogie

This video must be from 1983 because at the end someone in the crowd cheers "you rocked the house!" and then someone quotes the song "Rock The House" by Pressure Drop, released in 1983 on Tommy Boy.

I read about this being her showcase before her debut came out in 1983, of course "Everybody" had been a single in 1982.

Maybe we're just talking the difference between a couple months. She probably performed this song in the winter before Burning Up became her second single, followed by her album in April 1983.

  1. "Everybody"
    Released: October 6, 1982
  2. "Burning Up"
    Released: March 9, 1983
