i co-signed your post all the way, until you got here. i hated the color purple. there is something about it that is so contrived, i always hate when the "bad" characters are cartoon villains, and the "good" ones are so saintly as not to be believed. no nuance to the characters and there is a superficiality to the film that i can't quite put my finger on. hated the movie, hated the book, and when i had the opportunity to see the play, i turned my cousin down because i knew that was going to be 2 hours of my life i would have regretted giving up. whoopi did fine, everyone did fine, but hated the film. i liked her better in the film she did win for, 'ghosts'.

saw dreamsgirls. same thing you said about angela in 'what's love', in my mind applies to eddie and dreamgirls. weak ass movie, and if he was going to nominated he should have gotten one for bowfinger(?), the one with steve martin.

(btw, my vote is for lady sings the blues.)

Something used to bother me about "The Color Purple", I don't know what it is but you know every time someone mentions the movie now, it's often as something to be made fun of, especially Oprah's "you told Harpo to beat me" line. Dreamgirls SUCKED ass! It just did. As for "What's Love", what could've been a great film was hampered by inaccuracies, a not-so-good script and a little uneasiness. Larry & Angela were the only saving graces in that film like Eddie was the only saving grace in "Dreamgirls".

lol one of my friends quotes one of whoopi's lines from the film all the time. some kind of warning that she gives to the danny glover character, i think. damn! i can't think of it.

yep, agree about angela, larry, and eddie.

The Color Purple

I'm always amazed when I hear such sillyness about all good versus all evil people. Evil does exist. Black men have, do, and continue to beat the shit out and kill black women. What gets under most men skin is, they don't like their wretchedness to be exposed and they don't like to be called on it. Chinese Proverb, don't blame the mirror cuz you ugly. Of course if you don't "roll like that" than you see it in context, one would I hope you're standing up and against. If you can't see in context then maybe the mess hits too close to home. No pun intended.

Now see, they could've used that bullshit to their advantage right there and managed to portray her in a cool light as opposed to the pathetic bullshit ending, but NOOOOOO what do they do? Fly her back to Chicago in the ghetto, GTFOHWTB, you could've told me she was selling bean pies in Harlem with him and it could've even sounded more realistic lol

No Judy's version wasn't the original but it is the best, the 1937 version with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor doesn't even come close. That's why it's never mentioned. lol

Judy's the one everyone follows actually. Why you think Barbra and, now, Beyonce get to play it? To match Judy's. Barbra was too much going on... she and Kris. Either they were in love or they wanted to kill each other. I actually thought Kris' death scene was some funny ass shit as was Barbra tearing up his home after she found out that he cheated on her. And all that exorcist type of shit of her close-up during the ending lmao

I'm sure the studio thought Streisand could pull this off, no. Kris Kristofferson I don't know what the heck everyone was thinking, I think Kris was picked by Streisand. Beyonce doesn't have the talent to pull this off. She's going to embrarrass herself like Steidsand did, and I pity whomever the leading man is.

The thing is, Judy's version of "A Star Was Born" was turned into a musical. The music score, the unedited film/ screenplay with James Mason and Judy Garland's poignant acting, this version broke the mold. (Imo) Jame Mason (Norman Maine) could be boorish/self-destructive but he also could be gentle, kind and vulnerable, you could see why Judy Garland (Esther Blodgett) feel and in love with the guy. Even as Maine spiralled downward, you hoped he could get it together for himself and Bladgett sake. Good acting... on Mason's part.

As you and Soul pointed out, you don't have empathy for Kristofferson character, he just comes off as a self-destructive bore, you hope he would drive off a cliff, with someone throwing flowers over the cliff, and a Pastor reading, 'A psalm of David'. THE END

lol

I know. But some people who did work for his movies said that Elvis did have some talent in acting that was never fully brought to light because Tom was looking for a good payday. Times he did movies I wished Elvis had said no to them. neutral

is this post directed to my criticism? 'cause i certainly never said anything about evil not existing; it certainly does. but i'm talking about characters in a movie, not real life.

i read and critique screenplays as a side gig. what bothers me about this script is that there is a lack of development which makes all the characters one-dimensional charicatures rather than fully formed characters that propel the story. there should be all sorts of shades of gray in the characters which come together to compel, repel, fascinate, provide insight, and hopefully create a thought provoking story. for me, they don't. part of it, yes, is that some characters are "all evil", and some "all good". they make the underlying story boring and predictable. that type of story is not compelling to me.

i wouldn't care if mister was an evil character who beat ceely(?) if there was something else to him. given how thoroughly rotten he was the entire film, i certainly did not believe the ending. i stand by my assessment that i thought movie was crap, and you couldn't pay me to watch it again.

Anna Mae, I'm the only sinner in this house.....

She's good in everything she plays in. My favorite is when she was in "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and she was in a restaurant where the waiters were wearing Hawaiian hula skirts.....

They wouldn't let me bring my weed wacker in though....

And also the "Lifetime" movie where she played a Millie Jackson type singer. I forgot the name of that one.

"Lady Sings The Blues" is the better movie for sure, but the subject is too heavy handed for me to watch often. I have it on VHS (Yes I still have a VCR! Along with a DVD player) but only watch it once every few years. It just makes me so sad at how Billie Holiday's life turned out and yes I know the movie wasn't true to Billie's life in many ways, but either way she had a tragic ending and the movie often makes me sad, but Diana did a great job in it. She's a natural.

I prefer "Mahogany" for replay value however. It's so cheesy and campy, but I love the fabulous outfits Diana wears and who can forget the over the top scene where Anthony Perkin's character tries to kill Tracy in the car?

"Take the picture Sean....." falloff

Lmaooooooooooo@ Diana's facial expressions in that scene.

I love "Mahogany".

[Edited 8/20/11 19:35pm]

THIS! ^ You took the words right outta my mouth! LSTB is the better movie but I choose Mahogany because of its cheesy, campy soap-like drama. And that scene where A. Perkins tries to kill Tracy in the car? Classic. So HILARIOUS!

Take the picture! TAKE THE FREAKIN PICTURE!!!

falloff lol lol lol

Mahogany FTW!

biggrin that scene is CRAZY! lol
