I've given the whole thing a crooked side eye with eyelashes when they fucked around and hired Louis McKay as the movie consultant. No surprises there given that he owned Lady Day's estate but damn, everytime I watch the film with mental block just so I could enjoy it, the Louis McKay character pops out and I get reminded why this whole thin reeks with bullshit.

I hope somebody makes a TRUE Lady Day biography while I'm still on this earth.

It's like if Ike Turner produced What's Love Got To Do With It. It may have turned out differently lol

Same here! I prefer watching Mahogany more, even though Lady Sings The Blues was a monster of a performance. LSTB takes the cake for me.

Ok, Lady Sings the Blues. No, it is not an accurate movie, but it is a fun movie...for the most part. And Scatman (Worst nicknam that has morphed over time?) has a great, but brief role.

Scatman have acted with the REAL Billie Holiday too. I never knew that until recently.

"Lady Sings The Blues" is the better movie for sure, but the subject is too heavy handed for me to watch often. I have it on VHS (Yes I still have a VCR! Along with a DVD player) but only watch it once every few years. It just makes me so sad at how Billie Holiday's life turned out and yes I know the movie wasn't true to Billie's life in many ways, but either way she had a tragic ending and the movie often makes me sad, but Diana did a great job in it. She's a natural.

I prefer "Mahogany" for replay value however. It's so cheesy and campy, but I love the fabulous outfits Diana wears and who can forget the over the top scene where Anthony Perkin's character tries to kill Tracy in the car?

"Take the picture Sean....." falloff

Lmaooooooooooo@ Diana's facial expressions in that scene.

I love "Mahogany".

It was aight. I personally think her best movie (Diana's) was by far "Out of Darkness" where she didn't play a singer at all. That and "Mahogany" proved she had acting chops. The sad reality is that she never was able to expound on that either by reputation, money issues or, in some cases, age, and of course that old but still ongoing racism that has plagued many a black actor/actress in Hollywood.

I LOVE THAT SCENE!!!! Especially when she made the faces. I almost fell out of my chair laughing at that. lol I loved the bits in "Lady" where she has drug addiction struggles and deals with being in a mental ward. The lady could/can ACT!

That movie was heart wrenching, and the subject was brave. You don't see many black actors or actresses tackling roles of characters who suffer schizophrenia or manic depression. The film should be released to DVD.

Its a shame she didn't act in more films though, I also think she has a good sense of humor that could've been used had she dabbled in comedy.

Yes, the scene where Diana is in the mental ward and when she's in the bathroom fighting with Billy Dee to get the syringe are very powerful indeed. The scene with Richard Pryor's character towards the end is another moving one. Diana is a good actress. She has a great screen presence and lots of energy and a likeablity factor on screen.

I wish she had done more movies. She had such a promising movie career. Shame.

Yeah I agree about that scene with Richard too. Hell the entire time she and Richard were doing the scene together from the improvised dialog at the beach to the beatdown that led to Richard being killed in the film and Diana's panicked and torn-up reactions after Billy Dee's character calls at the place they were sharing, it's easy to understand why she got the Oscar nod for the role. I forgot it was a Billie Holiday film most of the time anyways though lol

Mahogany is my favorite...... Lady & The Blues is too heavy for me.

I always thought Diana was a better actress than she was a singer. neutral

Now here's a question that will throw us for a loop...which soundtrack was better (Lady Sings The Blues or Mahogany)? We all know Lady Sings The Blues is gonna be mostly everyone's choice, but the Mahogany soundtrack had beautiful instrumentals that I just love.

Diana was ROBBED of her Oscar for "Lady sings the Blues". That performance was Magnificent. "Mahogany" was just another movie where she could show off her acting chops...Diana & Bill Dee have AMAZING chemistry and Sex-appeal...

To this day Studios arent contracting Black Leading ladies in their films. It's very rare to see Black actresses in supporting roles. Nothing has changed since Diana's days of Movie-stardom...

Tyler Perry has said in print that he has BEGGED Diana to star in Drama under his direction but she either won't do it or she's just uncertain. Tyler also stated he told her she could do any type of film of her choosing. The Brotha wants to Direct her and show the world Diana still "got it in Spades"...

I thought Tyler did a great job Directing The Great Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates in "The Family that Preys"...Critics tanked-it but the Leading ladies Delivered the Goods like always...

I think "The Boss" should consider Tyler's offer. Tyler should hire Oscar Award winning screenplay writer Jeffrey Fletcher (Precious) and come up with a Drama that will knock the socks off the Industry...So I'm rooting for Tyler on this one and I hope the Brotha keeps Calling & Pestering her Staff until she agrees to a Meeting and a Plan of action...

If he ever gets Diana to say YES she'll be the Highest paid Actor Tyler has ever cast...LOL...Trust that...

It cracks me up that everytime a black Oscar nominee is mentioned within this forum, THEY WERE ROBBED!!

lol

Ross was up against a career defining role by Liza Minnelli. She won all the other major awards that season. The film was directed by the red hot Bob Fosse. Sure, Ross was great in Blues but to say she was robbed is just forgetting historical context.

And while I am on the subject, no, Angela Bassett was not robbed either. WLGTDWI is a weak ass film and Bassett's nomination was reward in of itself. She lost to Holly Hunter who played a freaken mute. A mute! And Hunter owned that screen and carried that film without saying a word in a film that was just mindblowing. Bassett's film was a couple steps above a Lifetime movie of the week. So no, Bassett wasn't robbed either.

You know who was robbed? Ms. Goldberg for The Colored Purple and Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls. Those are robs!
