BoF Exclusive | Zaldy Goc...a, Part II

Yesterday, we learned about the beginnings of Zaldy Goco’s work in the music and fashion industries. Today, in part two, we speak to him about his close collaboration with Michael Jackson for the This is It concert extravaganza.

NEW YORK, United States — When Zaldy Goco answered the phone last April and learned that Michael Jackson’s creative team wanted him to develop some costume ideas for the King of Pop’s long-awaited comeback concert series in London, he could scarcely believe his luck. A long time fan of the sometimes-maligned, but always-loved music legend, Zaldy set about developing an approach for creating costumes that at once hearkened back to iconic images from Jackson’s past, while also making him relevant for contemporary fashion of the day.

The results were amazing and once the decision was made to make Zaldy the chief costume designer for the upcoming concerts, the process to get there involved five up close-and-personal fittings between Zaldy and Michael Jackson over a period of a several weeks, including the last fitting, just days before the singer’s sudden death.

Zaldy kindly spoke to BoF about the experience of designing for Michael Jackson and shared some photos of Jackson from the fittings, published here for the very first time.

BoF: And now for the topic that I am sure everyone is most interested to hear about: your collaboration with Michael Jackson for the This Is It tour. How did that come about?

It was such a surprise that began with a really casual phone call from someone who was representing Michael’s choeographer, Travis Payne. It was already the end of April and the tour was starting in July, and he asked me if I was interested in making some outfits. Of course I said yes! But, I really didn’t take it all that seriously as I knew that Michael had only ever really worked with one designer in the past named Michael Bush. He had developed all of Michael’s iconic looks for Thriller and Bad. So, by no means was it definite. I thought maybe I’d get to make a couple of outfits — maybe.

It turns out that Michael had been advised to take more of a fashion look with his presentation, and he had asked to see designs from some really big names, including, I believe, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. My impression is that he got all these packages from these different designers and then he chose who he wanted to work with.

When he got my package, they called me right away and said he that Michael was jumping up and down screaming, saying “I’ve always wanted to do this! I’ve always wanted to do this!”

They asked me to come to L.A. the next day to meet Michael and told me they wanted me to do the entire show. In the end, because Michael is so faithful, he did ask Michael Bush to work on a few of the outfits as well, which I thought was really nice especially because it was supposed to be Michael’s last tour.

BoF: Wow, that’s pretty amazing. How would you describe what you designed for him?

This is the thing. When they first asked me to do this, they said “we need you to re-invent Michael.” And my first thought was that Michael does not need to be re-invented, especially not now. He is one of the only artists who created iconic looks and iconic images to go along with iconic songs. It’s not necessary for those looks to be reinvented — they just needed to be made more relevant for today. Nobody wants to see aThriller jacket that it isn’t red and black. People were going to want to see those iconic images, made more relevant to the times.

So, that’s what my approach was referencing what we knew, but bringing more technology and new techniques that Michael had never used before.

BoF: What are your favourite looks that you designed for Michael Jackson?

They all kind have their own specialness for me. But, if you ask anyone who works with me, they will always say the We Are The World outfit, embroidered with all kinds of techniques from around the worldfrom African to American Indian to Japanese to Chinese. It was quite a mix, and very beautiful.

But for me, I loved the Black or Whiteleather jacket, with three different custom plated coloured studs, which was kind of a Sumurai-referenced jacket. The finale jacket is also a favourite, especially because Michael was so excited about it. I had made what Michael called ’secret treasures’ in the shape of little teardrops that enclosed around crusts of crystal chunks.

And then of course there was the light-up outfit for Billie Jean, which was a collaboration with Philips Technology, which really, really made him the happiest. The last time I saw him was about six days before we were leaving for London, and I tried these pants on him and he was silent; completely stunned. After about thirty seconds, he said “It’s everything I’ve always wanted.”

So, that was pretty special for me.

BoF: And then, of course there was his sudden death, which must have turned things upside down for you.

I experience anti-climax after every project, but I was in disbelief. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I had been living and breathing Michael Jackson for weeks on end. When I design for a musician, I immerse myself completely in their music. It just has to play in my head the whole time.

I decided I needed to lock myself away in a hotel to get away, but even that didn’t work. Everywhere I went, people were listening to Michael Jackson. There was no escape.

BoF: Did you have any sense that he might be unwell?

Not at all. And that is the thing that I think the movie really shows. He was quite lively, energetic and strong. And, he was super in tune to all the details. Every time I met with him, he was always catching little details. When I’d do fittings with him, he was very solid and very strong.

BoF: Last year was quite a year for you. Doing Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson in one year is pretty big. What lies ahead for you 2010?

It’s funny because I kept seeing the two of them side-by-side in stories or hearing their names mentioned in the same story. And then, all of a sudden I was working with both of them. But right now, I’m pretty excited to get back into the Scissor Sisters, who are launching their third album. But also, last year was a big music year, and I’m thinking of leaning back towards fashion again.

BoF: So there could be a Zaldy label again?

There could be. Right now I am working on a gown for the Met Ball. So, let’s see. I’m working on a couple of things.

BoF: Thanks very much Zaldy for sharing your story with us.

Btw, I don't know if anyone saw it, but Karen Faye was saying that Michael was going to fire Zaldy (the Filipino fashion designer) and had already hired someone else to design different outfits for the tour..... because the outfits that Zaldy had designed looked good but he hadn't take into consideration the fact that Michael would need a lot of flexibility to move around and dance, particularly in certain songs... and Zaldy's outfits were quite heavy and not very flexible.

And it's already known that the outfits were already designed without Zaldy having met Michael or taken specific sizes from him. Which certainly seems strange.

Y'know that's been on my mind a bit. I mean, I saw the BOW outfit and I was like.."confuse How is Mike gonna dance with all those heavy looking spikes? I mean, that jacket looked like it wieghed 30 lbs or somethin'. The Heal The World jacket is the same deal. I mean, they were beautiful jackets, but they looked so heavy. Even the J5 outfit looked very constraining. I mean...it's a nice suit, but I can't see Mike dancing freely in it.

Cuz I make clothes somtimes, I notice that whenever Michael wore suits when dancing, the pant's crotch was always baggyer or looser than normal to allow easier flow of movement. Also, the pant hems were shorter, to draw your attention to his feet.

As far as him being fired. I take everythin' that woman says with a grain of salt. talk to the hand

I think it's quite likely that Michael expressed some dissatisfaction to Karen regarding Zaldy.

She may have exaggerated somewhat but I don't feel as if she would make that up completely.

And I felt the same regarding the weight of some of those outfits.

(On October 26, 2009, a fan asked) Karen, I also saw an interview on Extra this weekend where Zaldy spoke on the different costumes he created for various songs. There were costumes that were going to be lit up. Zaldy spoke about how excited Michael was and how he called Zaldy the night before he passed to express his excitement and ideas of collaborating on a clothing line he wanted Zaldy to be a part of.

On your page, I have read conflicting comments regarding this costume designer. From the interview I viewed this past weekend, it appeared Michael was enthusiastic about Zaldy, and there was no mention of Michael Lee Bush. Why???

Karen Faye Kissinger:
Not all of this is a true account. Much of it has been elaborated on for the hype factor. Michael NEVER mentioned a clothing line. I would imagine Zaldy would have loved to turn his "involvement" with Michael into a clothing line. Michael isn't here to stop people from lying and exaggerating....is he? Zaldy was a "friend" of Travis Payne's, getting in on the Michael Jackson merry-go-round.
Michael Jackson had Michael Bush, making him clothes on the sly, because MJ wasn't liking what Zaldy was making him. Michael was very gracious of course, and would never tell Zaldy to his face. None of the clothes he is presenting now, were ever completed, worn in a rehearsal and NEVER confirmed by Michael as his final wardrobe choice.
I believe that Zaldy got paid for his clothes...and the clothes and costumes MLB made for Michael and the dancers (and in the movie) have not been paid for.

AEG is in violation with their contract with MLB. I believe they have been offering unacceptable compromises. You have to have a lot of money to throw at lawyers to fight contract violations. AEG is a bottomless pit when it comes to money. In my opinion, Bush should just auction off the clothes, Michael REALLY wore.

In addition to this, Michael Bush confirmed that Karen was telling the truth.

Karen also addressed those pictures of MJ in Zaldy's outfits:

(fan asks)Well, he did try out the unfinished clothes. Zaldy has pictures of Michael with some of them. So MJ wasn't totally outside of it.

Karen:

Yes. I was also there during that "fitting". It was after Zaldy left that Michael asked Michael Bush to get started on making clothes that he could actually wear. It was June 19, 2009. I was in the room.

That's a mess. Michael and Quincy probably got in a fight about what to put on the album. Remember, the album was originally a three-album project for Michael. Quincy wanted it a single disc. At the end, Michael agreed to the single disc concept.

Michael was working on songs before Quincy officially signed on to it.

Tomboy (unreleased)

Hot Fever (unreleased)

Smooth Criminal (the version with Roger Troutman)

Speed Demon

What You Do To Me (unreleased)

Another Part Of Me

We Are Here To Change The World

Make Or Break (unreleased)

were all concieved in '85 and Quincy and Michael started working on the album in mid early 1986 if I recall. the Bad video was done in December 1986, 8 months before the final incarnation of the album was even finished

Then Dirty Diana and Liberian Girl were conceived in 1983-84

I made a fantasy 3 Disc Thriller track list somewhere.

Soleil Moon Frye, aka Punky Brewster: Michael Jackson and I shared A Jacuzzi

Posted 08/23/2011 12:13 PM PT by OnTheRedCarpet.com Staff
Soleil Moon Frye appears in a promotional photo for the series Punky Brewster. / Soleil Moon Frye appears in a promotional photo for her 2011 book Happy Chaos. - Provided courtesy of Ruby-Spears Productions / NBC / Dutton Adult

Soleil Moon Frye, aka 1980s television's Punky Brewster, says that when she was a child, she had a "heart-to-heart" chat with Michael Jackson in a hot tub and that the King of Pop also saved her from a swan.

The 35-year-old former child star reveals details her encounters with the late pop star in her new book "Happy Chaos," which was released on Tuesday, August 23.

Jackson's representatives have not commented on Frye's remarks. The King of Pop, who died in 2009, had often touted his friendships with young celebrities and made headlines in 2005 when he was tried for child molestation in a case involving a teenage boy. He was found not guilty.

Frye says in the book that she met Jackson at a Bruce Springsteen concert she attended with Kidada Jones, the daughter of music producer Quincy Jones, who worked with the pop star. Jackson showed up at the box they were sitting in with his friend, actress Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away earlier this year.

Frye, who was 8 years old at the time, says Jackson later invited the two girls to his home and that she took him up on his offer two weeks later.

She and her mother showed up at his ranch in North Hollywood, which is near Los Angeles. Kidada Jones was there as well and she and Frye were later permitted to remain alone with Jackson and watch "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," a 1971 film starring Gene Wilder as a chocolate factory owner who takes a group of children on an tour of his mysterious and seemingly magical facility.

Frye says Kidada Jones left the house after the three finished watching the movie and that Jackson then offered to show her his animals. The singer was known for keeping a wide varierty of pets, notably his chimpanzee, Bubbles.

"We went outside on his stunning property and began walking over a bridge when a swan jumped out at me," Frye says in her book. "Michael threw me to the ground in an effort to protect me. he explained that the female swan was pregnant and so the male swan was protecting her. Seemed normal, I guess."

The two later returned to the house. Jackson asked if she wanted "to take a Jacuzzi" and she accepted. She says she changed into a swimsuit and the two sat in a hot tub "talking about life, love and the secrets of the world."

"I remember him talking about the fact that he related more to kids than adults and that grown-ups never completely understood him," Frye says. "He sat across from me and we had a dialogue as if we were peers - a true heart-to-heart. He never made me feel like this was a bizarre situation. It just seemed as if he really wanted someone to talk to, someone who would make no judgments about him."

Frye said the two later played games in the house and that she never saw the pop star again after her mother picked her up.

"This story is not one I have shared often, but now I realize, if even for only one night, Michael Jackson was my babysitter," she wrote. "As strange as it all sounds - and I know it sounds strange - it was a highlight in my young life."

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is based on the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. A 2005 film remake by Tim Burton featured Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and was touted as darker, even creepy, by many critics, some of whom drew comparisons between the title character and Jackson amid his much-publicized child molestation case.

Kidada Jones, who is 37 and the sister of "Parks and Recreation" actress Rashida Jones, has also not commented on Frye's remarks.

Frye played pig-tailed Punky Brewster on a comedy series by the same name that ran from 1984 to 1988. After the show ended, the actress appeared on episodes of shows such as "Saved By The Bell," "The Wonder Years" and "Friends" and voiced characters on the cartoons "Tiny Toon Adventures" and "The Ren & Stimpy Show."

Frye had a recurring role as Roxie King on the sitcom "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch" between 2000 and 2003. Between 2001 and 2005, she voiced the character of Zoey on "The Proud Family." In 2008, she had small parts on the animated show "Robot Chicken" and in 2010, began portraying the character Aseefa on "Planet Sheen."

Frye's most recent project is the movie "For Better Or For Worse," which also stars Janeane Garofalo and Rebecca Gayheart.

Frye has been married to producer Jason Goldberg since 1998. They are parents to daughters Poet Sienna Rose, or Poe, who turns 6 on August 24, and Jagger Joseph Blue, who is 3 years old.

Some of it I thought was quite inventive - especially when he worked on the Thriller outfit, and Billie Jean outfit. Others - like the opening outfit did make me wonder - how heavy is that going to be - and outfits for Heal The World looked impressive. But alot of it was definitely OTT.

As for how practical they were or weren't - it's all immaterial now.

Another article from the past - one I wrote in July 1995 just after the HiStory album had been released. Obviously I drew a lot from Bad and Dangerous tours for the staging, but here is how I saw how Michael could present the HiStory tour.

HiStory Tour - would could be.

The show begins with a video collage featuring images from MJ's various short films shown on three jumbotron video screens. The images pass from the most recent through to Jackson 5. The soundtrack is the intro to History, stopping at Michael aged 11 stating "When I'm singing a song....". Suddenly a silhouette of MJ in a classic pose (think Black or White) appears on the screen that creates the stage backdrop.

Distortion and interference cuts in. The sound of machinery and industrial noise errupts as the intro to SCREAM begins. The stage bursts into light and explosion as the silhouette moves and we realise it is Michael. He is standing at the top of a series of steps. As he sings he descends the steps to the front of the stage. When Janet's turn to sing arrives, the video images are cut to Janet on the three jumbotrons. As such Michael is on stage singing along with a video image of Janet. At the end of the song Michael greets the crowd.

WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN' kicks in and sees MJ being accompanied by four male dancers. They perform the routine from past tours.

From there the band kicks into ROCK WITH YOU and MJ is alone on stage dancing freely. Michael performs HUMAN NATURE alone, with a solitary spotlight following his dream like dance moves. At the end of the song the stage fades to black.

The piano intro to IN THE CLOSET begins. A lone female dancer enters the stage. The four male dancers and two other female dancers join her surrounding her with flowing cloth like curtains that wave in the wind around her. As the music breaks in MJ enters and dances with the female. The rest of the dancers move to higher levels and continue their cloth wave dance. The song ends with a series of thunder claps and the sound of rain. The stage is bathed in blue. Wind stirs and Michael and his female dancer become separated. MJ exits stage right, the dancer stage left.

The storm fades as the intro to STRANGER IN MOSCOW begins. Michael enters dressed in a suit and long trench coat. He walks across the stage and is passed by his dancers in couples and groups. At the end of the song a female dancer walks passed MJ, he stops as his gaze follows her. Hurt and alone he walks after her, but she vanishes. MJ rests on the steps, alone as the opening strains to YOU ARE NOT ALONE begins. Michael sings a soulful rendition of the song as various landscapes appear on the jumbotrons and stage backdrop. The song ends and the sad atmosphere fades as the stage darkens.

A flash of vibrant colour and light changes the mood as a J5 medley begins. Michael is accompanied by his dancers as he recreates the routines of the J5 days. After the medley the intro to "I'll be there" begins. Michael interrupts it. "I wanna do a different song" he explains. He begins a soulful interpretation of WHO'S LOVING YOU.

The medley is followed with THRILLER. Michael is joined onstage by his dancers who re-enact the dance routine from the ground breaking short film as the band play a funkified version of the song.

At the end of the song the band play a short solo-spot. From this, the familiar hand clapping rhythm of THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US breaks in. Michael appears on stage with all his dancers as they perform a military inspired routine. The song's driving beat fades as two rival gangs enter the stage from left and right. They meet in the center ready for battle. The sound of a helicopter and police sirens wail. A spotlight hits the gangs, they scatter as the opening to BEAT IT begins. MJ appears wearing the jacket made famous by the short film. He is rejoined by the gangs for the dance routine. The song ends with explosions and flashpots.

From here the high energy continues through a medley of WORKING DAY AND NIGHT and DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH. The songs interchange ending with MJ performing his disappearance illusion. With a series of explosions he reappears to the strains of BLACK OR WHITE. The stage fades to black at the end of the song.

The opening chords of BAD fill the air as a spotlight reveals a buckle-clad MJ. Michael and band perform a funk rendeition of the track and mix it up with a chorus from 2 BAD. The song ends with MJ chanting with the audience "Who's Bad?". Fade to black.

A spotlight hits stage left to reveal two males. One dressed in casual clothing, the other dressed in a buisiness suit, carrying a suitcase, and wearing a hat with the word "PRESS" on it. They walk to the center of the stage with the man in casual clothes shaking his head in a "no" fashion. The hit the center and the press man stands in front of the other and opens his suitcase. A strong green light illuminates from the open case. The man changes his "no" to a "yes". Spotlight snaps off. A whisper is heard. "You'd do anything for money". MONEY has MJ singing center stage with his dancers paired off around the stage. Michael is dressed in a pin strip suit. As the lines "if you show me hand then I will shake it..." are sung a pair of dances is highlighted. The shake hands, take cash, and so on. They then join MJ in the chorus for a high intensive dance routine. The song ends with piles of money falling from the roof.

Michael begins WHO IS IT? a capella transfixing the crowd with his voice and beat box technique. The band one by one accompany him through to the chorus. As the song ends Michael leaves the stage.

The center jumbotron clicks on to a tv screen. Seated behind a desk a news anchor reads "In the news today singer Michael Jackson sleeps in an oxygen chamber....." The jumbotron to the right clicks on with another reporter stating "From the news desk, Michael Jackson has built a shrine to Elizabeth Taylor" The left screen clicks on with yet another news report. The stories merge into a muddle of rumour, as TABLOID JUNKIE begins. MJ is accompanied by all the dancers for an energized dance routine. During the song news headlines appear on the screens. At the end of the song the screens show various tabloids being thrown on top of each other Slowly they burst into flame. The flames burn for a while and are then transformed into sand. The sand swirls and twists to form the pyramids and sphinx. REMEMBER THE TIME erupts from the sound system with MJ and dancers reliving the routine from the short film. At the end of the song Mj leaves the stage. Fade to black.

After a short break. A spotlight lands on a solitary microphone stand, with MJ's black fedora resting on top. The mic is on a raised stage. As it descends, another spotlight follows it, then another, then another. When the stage reaches ground level, footsteps are heard as Michael walks over to the mic stand, puts the hat on his head and strikes his now famous pose. The infectious beats to BILLIE JEAN erupt. Michael, alone on stage, dazzles the audience with his dancing and moonwalk. At the end of the song MJ throws his hat to the audience.

A woman dressed in a skin tight black dress enters stage left. Michael enters stage right. The woman walks over to MJ and blows him a kiss as she walks past him. The opening to THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL begins. MJ chases after the woman during the song and is joined by his male dancers at the end for the dance routine. At the end of the song, MJ and the woman leave arm in arm.

Images of the wonders of the earth are shown on the jumbotrons. EARTH SONG begins with Michael alone on stage. During the song he is joined by his dancers dressed in various ethnic outfits. As the song ends Michael bids the crowd farewell.

MJ returns to the stage alone to sing a soulful rendition of MAN IN THE MIRROR. As the song ends an image of Michael is shown on the jumbotrons. The image moves in on his eye and breaks through to images of world history featuring Martin Luther King, Ghandi, JFK, and so on. HISTORY begins with MJ slowly joined by his dancers during the chorus. As the song builds images of world history are displayed. The song ends with Michael ascending the steps he cam down at the start of the show. MJ turns at the top waves goodbye to the crowd, and strikes his trademark pose. This pose appears on the screens and changes to a silhouette. Fireworks explode overhead and the show is over.

confuse why would the stage be wet?

lol outdoor performances. He's slipped quite a few times when performing during rain showers

0:16 - you can see he slips

0:24 - he signals them to wipe the floor

0:50 - lol

I did think of possible rain, but then I thought "would he really perform while it was pouring?" I just figured that they would cancel due to the weather being bad. shrug

Frank Dileo has died aged 63.

I don't agree with some of the decisions he was involved in around "This Is It" and after Michael's passing, but the impact he had on Michael's career in the 80's can not be denied.

RIP Frank Dileo.

Soleil Moon Frye, aka Punky Brewster: Michael Jackson and I shared A Jacuzzi

Why is she sharing this story now? It's like anytime someone wants some attention and fame, Mj's name will pop up out of the blue. I hope Kidada doesn't even respond

Music Industry Veteran Frank Dileo, Dead at 63

POSTED BY JACK SILVERMAN ON WED, AUG 24, 2011 AT 12:16 PM

065d_2354951.t-1.jpg
Longtime music industry veteran Frank Dileo, who managed Michael Jackson for much of his ’80s heyday and again during the last months of Jackson's life, died at his home in eastern Ohio at age 63, after a long illness. We just heard the news from a family friend, who said she thinks Dileo passed this morning, though the exact time hasn't been verified.

Dileo was the subject of a November 2007 Scene cover piece outlining his storied career. And we mean storied. He worked his way up from the bottom of the music industry to become one of the most powerful men in the biz. During his tenure at Epic Records, he was instrumental in signing or developing the careers of Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper, REO Speedwagon, Quiet Riot, The Clash and of course Jackson. Dileo lived in Nashville briefly in the ’70s and then moved here in January 2007 to start a management business, though he spent much of the last three years in Los Angeles after returning as Jackson's manager, and then handling issues with the late pop singer's estate.

His larger-than-life persona landed him a couple of movie roles, most famously as Tuddy Cicero in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas. Not only did he play the brother to Mafia boss Paulie Cicero, but he was responsible for one of the most legendary mob hits in cinema history, putting a bullet in the back of Joe Pesci's head in the film's climactic scene.

An excerpt from the Scene story, about Dileo's ever-present cigar:

There’s speculation that when he emerged from the womb, 60 years ago last month, Frank Dileo already had a cigar in his mouth. Look at the pictures on his office walls and in his photo albums, and more often than not he’s either holding or chomping on a fat, unlit stogie.

As a mystique-building accessory, those cigars have long since earned their keep. On the wall of Dileo’s Music Row apartment hangs a framed cartoon by the renowned late cartoonist for the London Evening Standard, Raymond Allen Jackson (known as Jak). An enormous lit cigar, so big that four men are holding it, is coming through the front doors of the Mayfair Hotel. The smoker is not yet visible. The caption reads, “I don’t know about Michael Jackson—but here comes his manager.”

Add to the cigar his gold watch, pinkie ring, manicured hands and Music Row-casual attire, and Dileo could be the poster boy for National Dress the Part Week. At 5-foot-2, he looks like he stepped out of Central Casting’s Music Biz Dealmaker file. And whether or not such visual signifiers are essential to success in the music industry, Dileo’s track record—by 21 he was RCA’s national singles director, by 35 one of the most powerful men in the business—proves they certainly don’t hurt.

This is the only article about Frank's passing that I could find on the net confused Perhaps the other news outlets are slow or they're waiting on confirmation? And earlier his Wikipedia page listed todays date as his date of death but now has removed it. confuse Well, if true, RIP Frank.

Frank DiLeo, who helped guide Michael Jackson career path to become the King Of Pop, died today due to complications from heart surgery in March. He was 63.

DiLeo, who began his affiliation with Jackson when he joined Epic Records as the VP of national promotion in 1979, helped make "Thriller" one of the best selling albums ever.

In 1968, DiLeo began his music industry career as a sales rep and promotion executive with CBS Records, and then during the 1970's he worked in promotion for Monument Records and RCA Records, until joining Epic.

While at Epic, DiLeo played a key role in the success experienced by such artists as Cyndi Lauper, Culture Club, Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, REO Speedwagon, Survivor, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Heart, and Luther Vandross, according to Larry Stessel, who worked alongside him at Epic.

After the success of "Thriller," DiLeo became Jackson's manager, responsible for all aspects of his career. His affiliation with Jackson lasted through the 1980's, but then abruptly ended.

In the early 1990's, Frank Dileo Management handled the careers of Taylor Dayne, Laurga Branigan, and Jodeci. Concurrently with running his management company, DiLeo also served as co-president of Savage Records from 1991-1993.

Since then, DLleo remained active in the music industry, even co-managing the Jacksons for a time in the mid 1990's.

In recent years, he had been heading up his own firm Dileo Entertainment Group based in Nashville.

He is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Belinda, son Dominic and grandson Frank Michael.
