Janet's remake of Joni Mitchell's "Beat of Black Wings"

Being a longtime fan of Joni Mitchell's classic song "Beat of Black Wings", Janet remade it for a 1999 Joni tribute album.

Never heard this. Janet is a pretty big fan of Joni Mitchell, eh? I remember she sampled "Big Yellow Taxi" for "Gone 'Til It's Gone" from the "Velvet Rope" album.

Why do people get so graphically offensive JUST BECAUSE of something of NON-IMPORTANCE as this? It's one thing to say, "Her singing about real issues in her cuddly telly tummy voice doesn't sound right to me!" as opposed to saying something a person might say during a physical fight that involved harsh words between the two parties. Just wondering what makes people react this way. That's all. Nothing else:)

My guess is that he's (or she's) a self-hating loser who has nothing else better to do than spew nonsense on an internet forum.

Didn't really mean to offend.

But the voice doesn't suit the song. It does irritate me when folks take a great song and cover it with a sweet and sexy. For me, it's a form of vandalism, and this is offensive.

If the title was "Beat of black wings (Sexy sexy version)" I'd have missed it.

Janet's been noted in many interviews for expressing her love for Joni--it's not just because she sampled and remade a couple of Joni songs. She said in Rolling Stone, I believe, that her brother Randy actually got her listening to Joni back in the early 80s, and she's been a fan ever since.

I wish someone would give a lyrical dissection of this song. I love the words, so poetic.

Nice vibe to the song, but Janet is no Joni

I'm thinking the narrator is sitting down at a bar with a soldier, and listening as he is telling her his horror stories about the way war has negatively affected his life, from shellshock, to his girlfriend aborting their child while he was away, to the way vets are sometimes treated as expendable. He is depressed, numbing the pain with alcohol, and feels like nothing more than a "chalkmark in a rainstorm".

I met a young soldier
He said his name was Killer Kyle
He was shakin' all over
Like a night-frightened child
This is his story
It's a tough one for me to sing
Hard as the squawk and the flap
And the beat of-the beat of black wings

"They gave me a gun," he said
"They gave me a mission
For the power and the glory-
Propaganda-piss on 'em
There's a war zone inside me-
I can feel things exploding-
I can't even hear the fucking music playing
For the beat of-the beat of black wings."

He said, "I never had nothin'-
Nothin' I could believe in
My girl killed our unborn child
Without even grievin'!
I put my hands on her belly
To feel the kid kickin'-damn!
She'd been to some clinic
Oh-the beat of black wings."

"They want you-they need you-
They train you to kill-
To be a pin on some map-
Some vicarious thrill-
The old hate the young
That's the whole heartless thing
The old pick the wars
We die in 'em
To the beat of-the beat of black wings."

There's a man drawing pictures
On the sidewalk with chalk
Just as fast as he draws 'em
Rain come down and wash 'em off
"Keep the drinks comin' girl
'Til I can't feel anything
I'm just a chalk mark in a rainstorm
I'm just the beat of black wings."

I guess the moral of the story is just an observation of how expendable we are as people. How we fight for these big causes, but are as fragile as chalk in a rainstorm.

But what does the "beating of black wings" mean? I assume its a reference to both crows and war jets.

Yeah I believe that's the reference. And yeah I agree with the moral. That's exactly what the song is about. I can actually relate to it in an apolitical sense...
