Neither. I choose Future Shock! Where else can you see a dance show with James Brown as the host, James Brown interviewing people, and only James Brown's music is played. razz

SOUL TRAIN...SOUL TRAIN...PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD...(ya'll know the rest!) music

Say what you want, but Dick Clark just never had moments as incomparable as these:

I watched both growing up but it was Soul Train hands down for me. It was a ritual every Saturday morning after the morning cartoons to tuned in to Soul Train. American Bandstand came on later. I just watched a documentary on Soul Train (The Hippest Trip in America) by VH1 didnt know Dick Clark aired a copycat show of Sou Train. Forgot the name of it I guess he was threatened by the popularity of Soul Train and wanted to get rid of the competition, didnt stay on the air too long that's why noone really remembers it.

"Soul Train" by FAR. Much better music, much better musical guests, and MUCH better dancing...well, much better dancing at least up until around 1983 or so. And even after a lot of the dancers on "Soul Train" got stiff, it was still better dancing than the pogo stick hopping around like they did on "American Bandstand". lol

I think in some ways SOUL! on PBS is better than Soul Train. It had more variety. Don Cornelius would never have an act like Rasaan Roland Kirk on his show. But there's no dancers though. razz There was another black music show in the late 1960's called The Beat which was hosted by Hoss Allen.

As a host, I like Dick Clark better than Don Cornelius.

Didn't Dick Clark try to compete against soul train by coming out with his own "soul" based show? I think I saw that on either an UnSung or some other TVOne special.

Both had a major effect on American music and their own place in its history, and holds personal memories for many Americans. For me, I enjoyed both programs and won't say one is better than the other, because both programs were open to everyone and enjoyable to watch.

Except for the musical acts, that show was absolutely horrible. Those dancers in those tights with all that leaping and swirling around on their tippie toes. Hell, I felt like I was looking at a ballet. evillol

I don't remember him. I recall Dionne Warwick, Marilyn McCoo, & LaToya Jackson. I think Rick Dees was a host at one time too.

And don't foget Andy Gibb.

I saw Arsenio do standup comedy on "Solid Gold" a few times but I never saw him host it. However, Arsenio did have a dance show in the early 1990s hosted by Nia Peeples called "Party Factory". It came on directly after his own show every night. I think I saw him host it a time or two himself.
