The entire US entertainment industry had mob ties back then.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

What does an ancient group from the 1700's have to to with anything today?

I didn't read the article, so I don't know what it says. But it has been long rumored that Marilyn Monroe was killed by either the mafia or the US government, and it has been said that Sam was a mob hit.

Well, apparently the Illuminati now controls the entertainment industry, runs all the world governments, kicks puppies, never tips at restaurants, doesn't call Mama on her birthday, etc...according to that great bastion of journalism excellence, MediaTakeOut.com lol

At least mobsters call their Mamas, lol

Jim Morrison? Tough call.

Sam Cooke? No.

Elvis Presley? No (although the rumors about faking his death still exist). Rumor has it that according to Ringo Starr, it was Elvis (who was also a part-time U.S. agent) who told the CIA that he believe John Lennon was the only member of The Beatles that couldn't be trusted because of John's socialist views.

Marilyn Monroe? Yes. She knew some information about secret societies. She once had an affair with John AND Robert Kennedy.

Michael Jackson? Yes. The moment he started to tell his die-hard fans/stans about the dark side of the entertainment industry, he was automatically mark for death.

Sam Cooke was murdered and rumors have persisted for years that he was set-up and killed by the mob.

You are telling me that Sam Cooke was on such otherworldly shit that he ran into the hotel office wearing nothing but shoes and a jacket, feral, and attacked a woman? Come on, man.

Some of his family, friends and associates believe that mob wanted in on his record company. He was one of the only black artist at the time to have a record company and control over his publishing. If you do some reading about Sam Cooke nothing about his murder makes sense.

Dream Boogie is a really good book about Sam and "Hit Men" is about the mob's control over the music industry.

You should also check out Rick James's autobiograhpy he has a scary story about his encounter with the mob when he was signed to Motown.

Plenty of info about the mob and the entertainment world so nothing should surprise anyone

The whole thing reaks of fuckery. If he was not assassinated, then it was a race crime covered up. They lured him to a hotel with a hooker, beat the shit out of him - nearly separating his head from his body and smashing his extremities, and shot him. Then removed all his damn clothes cept just enough to make him look berzerked. They robbed his ass of several Gs he had been carrying and the man's clothes. Messed up. That shit does not happen by accident, no way no how...

In a book about Frank Sinatra, it said that the mafia were going to beat up or kill Sammy Davis Jr. in the 1960's because he owed them money. But Frank talked them out of it. Sammy worked off the dept. It's no secret the mafia ran Las Vegas (and clubs in New York like The Cotton Club) and you couldn't get a gig there without going through them. It also said that Frank helped B.B. King a gig in Vegas. Brunswick Records (Jackie Wilson, Chi-Lites) was openly mob ran.

As far as Sam Cooke goes, the girl he went to the hotel with was a prostitute who was also said to be a girlfriend of a mafia guy. I was reading an article about Solomon Burke in a recent magazine (I think Wax Poetics). In it, Solomon says he was with Sam the night he died at a nightclub. He doesn't mention any details, but he said he was writing an autobiography and was going to talk a little about it. Since Solomon has passed I don't know if the book was finished.

Damn, Sammy Davis stayed pissing off the mob, didn't he? If it wasn't the infamous "eye injury" over Kim Novak, then its about money lol

And yes, the mob was running amok, I don't know how folks would be naive enough to think that its a conspiracy theory? C'mon now, as BLATANT as that practice was? lol

Its a wonder how famous black musicians survived and still maintained a straight face back then, and its taken for granted these days, those people paid some hard heavy dues.

I would say they had it pretty good, compared to their non-musician peers. Lotta musicians were either sympathetic or outwardly helpful to their fellow musicians no matter the race. It is sobering, though, to realize that that leniency was an option, not a rule and when the mob chose to remind the black musicians who was in charge - it was not fun or pretty.

Not just black musicians, but Hollywood under the studio system too. Actors had no choice in what they appeared in. If they were told to appear in a film, they had to do it. It didn't matter if they actually liked the movie. There was also a lot of "casting couch" going on.

Yeah, I'm sure it was real peachy to be controlled all over their natural lives, and their estate after they hit the ground all because of a "signature".

You're right though, there're many BRAVE musicians who extended their hands to black musicians, but the reality was, most of these black musicians were up against the wall and the many of them who wound up unlucky, were forgotten by so-called historians. So much for having it pretty good.

The upside of this scenario though is, younger black musicians should learn from their mistakes, and fortunately, many of them are nowadays.

Yep!

Judy Garland and Bette Davis quickly came to mind. Miss Davis was a trooper, she fought them solo, and won.

Bette Davis was one tough cookie.
