how much do you care about setlists?

like when my fave artists start a tour, do a gig, i always have an imaginary BEST setlist in my head. it's always i HOPE HOPE HOPE they sing such and such...i'm tired of him/her doing this one...and if I can't be there I love setlist.fm.

but do most of you all care? do you look it up before if it's a madonna tour, for example, where it will be the same every night, or do you have the discipline to hold off until night of?

i think MJ's setlists (tho i never saw him live) were basically always the same since the victory tour with new sections added for the new album...madonna has too many album tracks for each new record in that new tour then rearranges the fuck out of the oldies which can be GREAT and disappointing...janet's been doing the same show from 93 to 01 then the same show from 08 to 11...tina always threw in some great curveball covers (otis redding, etc) but also is very predictable...no 2 erykah shows have been the same, yet i feel like she never gets to her 'current' 'hit' single (honey, window seat) .... plus on and on and it's sequel are performed at EVERY show in the SAME SPOT...girl needs to mix it up and quit opening with the healer-me from her album before her last...and tori - amazing, she can do a TOTALLY DIFFERENT set each night. I have heard bruce springsteen does similar, though not a fan. prince does too many medleys of late and not enough surprises, too many nostalgia hits from 82-91 and not enuf album cuts...

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

thing is that when you buy a ticket you PAY to see the artist, they arent obligated to do anything BUT SHOW up, this is what i feel people get mixed up, NOW i understand people who say they want hits, but to be honest, for 8 years now all i have heard from Prince is HITS, i want an artist to mix it up, especially ones that i have seen countless times. NOW if its billed a certain way like when Prince did the musicolgy tour you knew what you were getting, or others who say this is a "greatest hits tour" or a band is doing a show and they say they are playing such and such album in its original form things like that are different, of course i care about the setlist, BUT at the end of the day, i dont feel i have a right to certain songs because i have a ticket

Not one wit.

Any artist that I pay money to see, I have full faith in the fact that they'll put together an enjoyable set.
I go in with no preconceived expectations. In fact, I hope they'll play material i've never heard before.

They could almost play nursery rhymes all night, just as long as they do a good creative job of it.

My favorite band Crowded House never does the same show twice and they actually encourage requests. I've gotten some obscure gems played over the years. Not knowing what's going to be played is one of the reasons I can go to so many shows each tour. I go in hoping to hear some of my favorites or some I've never seen live yet, but I know I'll enjoy whatever they decide to play.

That being said, I believe I've heard their biggest UK hit, "Weather With You," at every single show. It's never been one of my favorites (and it wasn't even a hit here), so I'd be happy if they skipped it. But I'm not complaining. lol

I think Janet's setlists were always balanced. Incorporates the new with a fresh look and moves, and still pays homage to the classics with a modern twist with moves, or newer beats incorporated in, or newer fashions.

MJ's were repetitive like the other tours for the most part, but I love that he kept classics in cause seeing him do those on my tapes get me hyper. I'm glad he incorporated newer material too on the tours, but didn't give much attention to newer album tracks which he could have done so much with. I was hoping for performances of Who Is It, Whatever Happens, Give In To Me in some fashion, but it's alright

Madonna includes new material and right now that benefits her cause I'm feeling her new music, but I HATE how she remixes her older songs, she really ruined Like a Prayer and Borderline and La Isla Bonita at Sticky and Sweet. While I appreciate she was trying to be creative, she failed to amuse me with it and it was my first time seeing her though I've been a fan since the mid 80's. I will still pay for another tour, but hope for something better.

don't care too much. i sometimes hope they'll sing this song or that song, but doesn't really matter.

i usually want them to do b-sides or non single tracks. but i don't get my hopes up for that either. LOL. from my favourites, they could sing anything.

however....

when i saw Janet Jackson i was disappointed because SHE SAID she'd be performing ALL the hits from her 'hits' album, but, the 1st 2 songs were the videos on the screen. then she left out about 4 tracks. 2 which i was really looking forward to. and she didn't even have costume change.

hmph!

still enjoyed it though.

biggrin

that's what is kind of disappointing, when you hear about the set list and get excited about a certain song, then they go and cut it out. lol. ah well.
