Still got the beat: Go-Go's get Hollywood Walk of Fame star

Up next: the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

Members (l-r): Kathy Valentine, Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock and Jane Wieldin, pose in front of their star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, August 11, 2011

'A Hollywood star is all I ever wanted': The Go Go's make it to the Walk of Fame

Pioneering girl rockers The Go Go's received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, 32 years after they first formed in Los Angeles.

The quintet, who have been dubbed 'the high priestesses of pop' were all present to receive the honour, and in fine form.

And it was a particularly poignant moment as the ceremony took place in front of The Masque, the former punk rock club that housed the band's first performance in the 1970s.

'We loved the Hollywood Walk of Fame even then,' said Jane Wiedlin, 53 , one of the band's four founding members.

She added: 'In our wildest dreams, we could never have dreamed our little band would get a star on the Walk of Fame.'

Wiedlin, who enjoyed some success in her solo career in the late 80s with the album Fur and the single Rush Hour, was joined by Charlotte Caffey, 57, Gina Schock, 53, Kathy Valentine, 52 , and 52-year-old Belinda Carlisle.

The latter's 1980s hits Heaven Is A Place On Earth and Leave a Light On have become classic hits, and she remains the best known of the gang.

The group made history as the first all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts

Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, is considered one of the classics of new wave, and broke barriers, paving the way for a host of other new American acts.

When the album was released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately reaching number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks.

The L.P. sold in excess of three million copies and reached triple platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums ever.

The Go-Go's have sold more than seven million albums.

If they're up to it they will. They had initially planned to retire this year but decided against it from what I heard. smile

nod

Belinda had said that the GoGo's all have decided to part ways once and for all. this was about 2 years ago. go figure. lol. When Jane broke her leg it delayed their farewell tour, which may have been a blessing in disguise for fans.

Exclusive: The Rock Hall Addresses That Go-Go's Problem

Posted by Michael Gallucci on Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 11:32 AM

go_gos.jpg

You may have heard that the Go-Go's aren't too happy about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's decision to leave them out of its upcoming Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power exhibit, which opens on May 13.

The group's bassist, Kathy Valentine, has been tweeting like crazy that the Rock Hall's oversight may have something to do with the fact that the all-girl group recorded only three albums back when they mattered.

Or maybe there's some other deeper conspiracy (like the one keeping Rush out of the Rock Hall ... or so say conspiracy theorists).

But hold on a minute, says the Rock Hall. They're finally opening up about all this. The Rock Hall tells Scene the group was invited to participate in the exhibit but, in typical rock-star fashion, they never heard back from the band:

The Go-Go’s played a pivotal role in the history of rock and roll. They were the first all-female band to make it to the top of all the major charts with songs they wrote themselves. If you want to have a serious discussion about Women in Rock, you have to include the Go-Go’s.

Our Women Who Rock exhibit this year is not intended to be a survey of the top female bands and artists. It’s meant to shed light on the myriad stories of female artists and the ways that their music shaped our society. That being said, we do think that the Go-Go’s are an important part of that history. Our team made several attempts to get them to participate in this exhibit, but never heard a response.

We cannot understate our desire to have the Go-Go’s voice in our program this year. While the exhibit itself is fully-designed and being installed now, our plan is to have a year-long series of live events, educational programs and other discussions. It’s important for the Go-Go’s to have their voice in this program and we fully intend to continue to reach out and seek their involvement.

We don't want to take sides on this, because we think Beauty and the Beat is a really good album and it's a great thing to preserve rock history the way the Rock Hall does. But after dealing with many, many absentminded rock stars over the years who weren't around for a scheduled interview or showed up late for a meeting, we're gonna take the Rock Hall's word on this one.

After all, if they can make room for someone like Melissa Etheridge in the exhibit (yeah, we get it, she rocks, but she kinda sucks), surely they reached out to the awesome Go-Go's.

If the Sex Pistols could get in with one album, what's keeping the Go-Go's from keeping them from getting in for three?
