Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! Prince has WAY too spotty of a record when it comes to writting for others. Or really songwritting in general. 2012: The Queen Returns

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, they are flexible in working with people according to their style. Prince is just an ass that would make me feel bad about myself cause he has so much talent and doesn't settle for less. I used to be told I sound like Janet before I started professional training, though I'm not really sure about that. I could if I wanted to, but sing with my chest voice more and try to not limit myself when singing. Based on that, it would be easy to work with them, plus they have also done songs with other artists I love to sing along to. Maybe I would do a funk/rock song or two with Prince and sneak that in if anything. Have him write a few songs and pick which one I want to record [Edited 8/15/11 21:55pm]

JJ & TL in a nutshell.
Prince didn't produce for other artists, he produced for alter egos of himself and the few cuts he produced for other established artists, he had them emulating his sound as opposed to tailor made a song for THEIR voices.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for sure.
It's amazing, Prince is such an extraordinary talent, I put him in the same category as Mozart and Poe, but he has a pension for making people sound like HIM, and not like the best of who THEY can be.
Prince needs to stick to making music for himself. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.... WHAT???

If I choose between them, then - Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Having Prince produce your album in the 80s means....you simply show up in the studio and add your vocals to tracks that he has already recorded before you arrived
With Jam and Lewis (and other producers),they would meet you, talk to you,get to know you and let you have some input into the recordings. This is how it was when they worked with Janet Jackson.

If it was before 1985, I'd have Prince to do it. If it was after 1984, I'd have Jimmy and Terry to do it. . . . [Edited 8/16/11 6:39am] Andy is a four letter word.

Prince wouldn't help me unless I blow him. Not gonna go there...
Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam all the damn way. It'll prolly come out better than just some slut-faced album with me strutting around in lingerie.

Jimmy & Terry at least help you form your identity. Prince? "Just show up and sing it like me, k? "

You got it. If I had been someone like Jill Jones who had been with him when he was making the cold music and getting big hits off of it, and then he came to me in 1987 with some strings and stuff on it, I would have been ready to slap the shit out of him and would have said........"Uh....look motherfucker, you can sabatage your own albums with that shit but this is my album you're fucking with now. You've made your money and can afford a flop but I'm still trying to get paid. Where's my fucking "Sugar Walls", where's my fucking "Sex Shooter", where's my fucking "Nasty Girl"? Look at Jimmy and Terry over there. Hell, look at Morris, Jesse, and Andre. They're giving folks what they want. They're turning out hits. Now, either you give me some of that stuff like you were giving folks back then, or I'm gonna have a meeting with those guys, lay on the table, gap my legs open, and the motherfucker that gets satisfied the most, gets to do my album. It's that simple you little bitch. You little whore you, you think you've got me over a barrel now that I"ve lost my Rick James connection since he's all strung out on crack these days. I'll get a hit with your own previous men. You stole me from Rick and Teena, now your ex-boyfriends can steal me from you". . . . [Edited 8/16/11 12:22pm] Andy is a four letter word.

If I were in my teens, as I was in the 80's, my Stan-dom would have made it an easy call for Prince.
If I were taken back in time to the 80's, I'm with RKJCNE: if I wanted to be a star, Jam and Lewis were the obvious choice. They were a machine. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

If I want quality music and respect from my peers I'd go with Prince.
If I want to get paid...I'd go with TL & JJ I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Exactly. Every song Prince has written/produced for others sound JUST LIKE PRINCE.
I'd pick Jimmy and Terry because each song had it's own legs. You wouldn't know it was a Jimmy Jam and Terry record unless you were told. You can hear a song and KNOW Prince did it...

Yeah - you'd think it was a Prince one.
