Love George's banshee like screaming in this as much as I dug Eddie Hazel's crazy guitar licks. Just incredible track. And we can't forget Bernie! It's like psychedelic gospel.

You've got to love it. It's everywhere and no where at the same time.

Plus I love how dark and uplifting it is...at the same time lol

When I first heard this song, I was shocked hearing, "Free your mind and your ass will follow....the kingdom of heaven is within". That got me cause of my DEEP religious upbringing. It was almost like blasphemy to the religious me and euphoria for the musician me.

lol and technically ass is in the bible so when you think about it, it ain't as much blasphemy. The funk will set you free is what the entire message of that song. I got the Holy Ghost from Bernie's keyboard riffs actually.

I agree. Hell the entire album was a masterpiece.
I just always love this one:
I have to admit when I first heard this and heard Eddie Hazel's voice (from "Open Our Eyes", a traditional gospel song mind you) singing backwards was hilarious. But as I listen to it more and hearing George's almost demonic deep voice reciting like he was a pimp in one hand and a defeated man in another, it made sense.

Everytime I spin this stanky cut, my head spins (in a good way). It's mindboggling how amazingly insane it is. George, Eddie and Bernie... Check me out and add me on:

Never even thought about it that way. Makes it so much better in my eyes now.
I agree. Hell the entire album was a masterpiece. The music scene was TOP NOTCH back then...so sad it slipped to the underground now.

This was posted on my Facebook wall a few days ago:

IIRC, according to an interview I watched with Jimmy Jam, that was Janet Jackson's twist on the phrase, too.
I can't tell you just how much it grieves me, as a materialist - mindful of Marx's critique of Hegelian idealism - to have to side philosophically with Janet over George. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

Obviously there was a ton of fantastic music made after Free Your Mind and You Ass Will Follow but I can not help wishing that we got more music from the early Funkadelic lineup. I don't think anyone ever mixed hard rock and funk as well as they did on the first three albums.

You said a mouthful there. I agree too.
