Linda Perry: “Katy Perry Is Part Of The Reason Why The Music Business Is In Turmoil”

Linda Perry shares a last name with Katy Perry but she is definitely not cut from the same cloth. Following Katy’s record-breaking achievement of scoring 5 consecutive #1 singles from a single album, Linda has slammed the Pop singer by saying that she is “part of the reason why the music business in turmoil”.]

See the songwriter’s interview with Heath Daniels below where Linda, who was the mastermind behind Christina Aguilera’s ‘Stripped’ LP, lauded Adele’s ’21′ and referred to Katy’s ‘Teenage Dream’ as “sh*t

I have mixed feelings regarding Linda’s comments. While it is evident that Katy’s music is far from groundbreaking and that she simply copied the work done by Cyndi Lauper, Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, her music is not complete “crap”.

Surely, ‘Firework’, ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Circle The Drain’ are all solid Pop records that were written to suit her audience. In fact, Katy never claimed to be the second coming of Barbra Streisand; she is simply trying to satisfy a market that would otherwise reject her if she made music with greater depth.

Still, with the Billboard Hot 100 currently categorised by Dance/Pop redundancies and artists attaching themselves to the latest trends in their desperate attempts to score a hit on iTunes, Katy has done little to set herself apart from the pack. Indeed, she is just the best of the worst; a definitive figure in a twisted world where Rihanna sets the bar

I think Linda Perry has just as much to do with todays "state" of music.

Wasn't she involved with Floptina's Bionic? She has no room to talk.

Goodbye Linda.

I just wanna know how it's an accomplishment to have 5 consecutive No.1's in an era where NO ONE is selling records. It's like being the top bullfighter in Alaska. razz

Goodbye Linda.

She only wrote one song for it, the only good one in my opinion...

Linda is a spectacular songwritter but I think she doesn't have room to talk after writting songs for P!nk and Christina that certainly inspired Perry.

Because the dynamics of the music industry have changed. The hit single and hit album have been divorced from each other. Case in point: Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad had seven top ten singles released from it, putting it into the same territory as Michael Jackson's Thriller; yet her album sold only 2.6 million copies in the USA. Not a bad number these days, but very underperforming considering how many hit singles came from it.

And that's just record sales numbers. That doesn't take into account live performances and/or tours. Many of these huge singles artists suck when performing live, and a lot of them can't sell out small club or theater venues, let alone an arena. Meanwhile, you have acts like Dave Matthews Band, who sell just a small amount of albums, yet their tours sell out arenas and sometimes even stadiums. Considering many of these pop acts can't cut it live, they need to branch out into fashion and perfumery to bulk up their bank accounts.

Anguished white female artists always have the biggest mouths. The ones that challenge everything that's popular and mainstream...that are perfectly fine with flopping because "our music is too deep for the preppy's to understand."

You're such an inspiration to us all Linda. Hopefully this puts all the shine back on real singer-songwriters with real messages and real introspective lyrics. Fuck all these conformists like Katy Perry. I don't get how anyone could relate to all that glitz and glamour. YUCK! Let me run and get my Lisa Loeb, Fiona Apple, and Alanis CD's while I wash my hair with dish detergent.

I doubt Katy is to blame, but when I see her I think she is too old to be doing the crap she does.

I just don't see why so many people these days are so limited when it comes to music!

Why can't I listen to both the fun stuff and the introspective stuff!

Half my friends from college made fun of me for listening to Pop Radio, the other for listening to College Rock radio.

Katy is successful right NOW. It'll be interesting to see if she can last. Anyways, I think Katy is cute, and has catchy songs.

Why? Because she performs those dumb songs with an ironic twist, whereas Pink and Christina Aguilera take their dumb songs more seriously?

N Honestly one would think that Linda has penned enough songs to look and act like she didn't roll out of a santa monica dumpster at 5 in the morning to make it to the interview.

No covered in jizz comments necessary.

Yeah ain't she like PAID now? Why all of a sudden is she getting butthurt over another artist's success? What? Did Katy not wanna do any of her songs she might've tried to give to her?

Let's not pretend that Linda wasn't telling the truth, and I appreciate her candor. Katy Perry -- perhaps -- isn't the sole reason the music business is in turmoil, but she contributes to it...and the music scene that embraces throwaway pop crap is the same scene that allowed her 5 forgettable #1 singles from an album that is struggling to reach double platinum. Linda was right, clowns like Katy, Gaga, LMFAO, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Jason Duerulo, Taio Cruz are cheap microwave popcorn for a passing fix.

But hasn't crappy throwaway pop music always been in the spotlight, minus a few years here and there though?

I mean, some of the garbage that came out of the 80s won folk a lot of quick cash, but really just sucks. Todays "firework" is yesterday's "P-a-s-si-o-n, got me a jam again." lol

Perhaps, but I think in the past 2 or 3 years, crappy throwaway pop has overtaken everything. Crap music has always been around, but there used to be enough better made/better produced music out there making noise to neutralize it. Next to nothing is neutralizing the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga; and as a result the inmates are now running the asylum. That's why I think Linda is on the money and is speaking the bone marrow truth (as Oprah would put it.)
