Freddie Mercury Is Not The Greatest Male Singer/Vocalist ..No he really isnt

Firstly i would like to say things like.. best artist..greatest entertainer are really subjective to the indiviual and are a matter of opinion and preference to the individual

How ever talking soley about the vocal ability of an individual can be factually backed up

E.g i may love Janet ,rihanna or taylor swift to the extreme but to say they are the greatest vocalist wouldnt be simply untrue...

Now i created this thread in response to ........ thread by

TylerHippie

http://prince.org/msg/8/364358

which stated [quote]

To me, he's the greatest to ever do it. "Bohemien Rhapsody" is just mind blowing.

"Cool Cat" is a perfect example of what he's about. Take a listen.

He's a better vocalist than Michael Jackson, Prince etc...

[quote]

i didnt respond at that time because i wasnt familiar which his entire body of work ...so as to give an unbiased opinon i went to get the essentials.. his solo work together with the queen discography ..

After days of hia songs on repeat i will admit..expecting him to be as good as tylerhippie claimed iwas left heavly underwhelmed...

A good vocalist yes but there wasnt anything "Vocally" Jaw dropping about almost everything i listened ..the were some sharp screams impressive..but i have heard better from Ray charlse and james brown .i heard he was a amateur singer in his 20's till he joined queen..i dont know how that is relevant but some people think he is because he didnt get an early start singing like others ..well..

well IMO ..prince is a faaaar superior and better more vesalitle vocalist.. Michael has had vocal training from the age of 7 ..his vocal dexterity across almost every genre speaks for itself...and not just because im a fan..im sure my fellow mj fans can show you proof of this...

Now let me not even go across genres and compare freddie to some of his fellow contemprories in the same genre

steven tyler will easily eat up freddy

Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna...rmageddon)

Steve perry.. would easily spit out freddie

Steve Perry - Don't Stop Believin

Adam Lambert would drag freddie by the weave

Adam Lambert - Cryin' (Studio version)

Just a few to make my point....So to answer you question

TylerHippie frreddie is not the greatest male vocalist ever..far from it actually..he may be considered a favorite entertainer to some ..but vocally not the best

Amazing - you did all that research... You really seem to have sent yourself on a mission to support a denial of Tyler's assertion rather than any true exporation into Freddie Mercury - your loss. Let the young man have a joyous moment over the music he is young and joyous over, geesh.

Let's not involve classical music, because all opera singers a high level can destroy any popular artist ....

Freddie - the best vocalist in the history of popular music. wink
I would say that relying solely on the vocals I would have made such a top-10 best voices in history:

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Robert Plant
3. Steve Perry
4. Elvis Presley
5. Aretha Franklin
6. George Michael
7. Michael Jackson
8. Stevie Wonder
9. Paul McCartney
10. John Lennon

What do you think about it, guys?
PS Just do not resent that there is no Prince. Come on ... lol
I love Prince, but he can not enter the Top 10 best singers in history. At best, the top-20

Heh! ((:
Let's just say the first 8 places for me were obvious, and then all is not that simple ... Next comes a group of applicants with similar vocal qualities.
As defined number 9 and number 10 was difficult, I decided to put these places on John and Paul. Maybe they are not the greatest singers in history, but they could sing and did it well. Almost any Beatles cover songs lose the original ... It's true.
What do you think about my Top 8? wink

Funny, because I tend to think that Beatles covers are usually superior to the original vocally, definitely. It's like when really good singers cover Prince songs. Usually sounds 200% better. Like that one: 'I Feel For You.' His version is downright embarrassing.

As for your list, it's all right. It's the usual suspects that you would find on a rock critic based publication of some sort save for George Michael. Besides 9 & 10. I do think it's missing a ton of great singers though such as Sam Cooke.

No, Aretha on a well-deserved position (but I much prefer male vocals, so perhaps a bit biased ((smile.
Sam?
Yes, he's really good. He may have the perfect candidate for 9 or 10 position instead of Paul or John (I love them to death, but agree that their place in the top 10 are not conclusive).
And what are your top 10?......... wink

LOL at Lennon and McCartney being on a list of great singers when Prince ain't on there.

It's weird how some people here downplay Prince's incredible vocal ability.

I don't think it's weird at all. When I think of a great vocalist, Prince is usually not even included the first 30 people that pop into my mind. He's ok. I think he sings better than Janet though...for what it's worth.

Okay, why is Aretha Franklin number 5? Right there, you discredit yourself. You also discredit yourself by adding John Lennon, whose voice is pretty demolished by Aretha, Elvis, Michael and even your man Freddie. Not to mention that Paul McCartney knows how to hit those notes better than Lennon. So, time to lock this futile thread that I just too time to respond to.

Really, this made you go back on your statement? OH wow. And yet you still maintain that Freddie Mercury is superior. That man seems like a great vocalist because he screams a lot.
