Honestly? I don't know, lol.

I think it started around the time she came out with "Freeway Of Love". Was never crazy about that song (...like I was never crazy about James Brown's "Living In America", or Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters" - those songs to me sounded like the artist was selling out), and KJLH in Los Angeles used to play it like every 30 minutes, lol. Around that same time (early 80's), I started hearing stories about how she put on lousy concerts, how she'd half-way sing, or get an attitude and storm off the stage altogether. Then all this other drama started taking center stage in the media, above her singing or performances.

Also, by the early 80's, I was already a hardcore Parliament/Funkadelic fan, Prince was all over the map, and while I still loved Aretha's earlier catalog, nothing she was doing around that time really got my interest. So over time, I just stopped keeping up with her, aside from whatever drama made the headlines.

But when I saw her in concert last week, listening to her sing all those old songs literally brought tears to my eyes. So much music that I had all but forgotten about! I felt like: OMG! How have I forgotten about The Queen of Soul?!? I mean seriously, you could have mopped me up off the ground when she sat down at that piano and performed "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". Also, last year, she was scheduled to perform a free concert here in NY, but I somehow didn't go (I learned later that the show had been cancelled). But then, not long after that, Aretha had that big health scare, and I really began beating myself up for not ever having seen her live. So, when I found out about the concert in Brooklyn last week (here on the Org), there was no way I was going to miss that! And apparently, much of NYC felt the same way, judging from the crowds in attendance (...all ages, all races, from all walks of life!).

All I know is, just being in her presence, listening to her sing those songs that I grew up listening to, not only sent chills up my spine, but was an experience I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

That rendition of Freeway Of Love didn't sound like selling out, she sounded like she was selling it! She took y'all to choich. The band was bangin!

In general, from what I could tell, there were no pyrotechics (maybe fireworks at the end), elaborate stage sets, hordes of dancers or any other distractions from the central talent...Aretha Franklin. And let me guess, you didn't have to wonder once whether she was really singing.

True proven talent coupled with stellar material trumps the necessity for any of those props.

No backup dancers descending from the ceiling on bungee cords, no guest rappers, no sharks in a tank with laser beams attached to their foreheads, lol. And you're right, no hint of Autotune! After reviewing those YouTube clips, even with how she kept her vocals in a lower than usual register (...as ALL maturing professionals know to do), even when perhaps she didn't belt out a phrase or two with the power she may have in her youth, it was still all on key! I realized that night that this woman is a Technician! I love when older singers KNOW what to do with their voice, like Tony Bennett, Elton John, or even George Clinton. I love his rugged, road-weary vocals on songs like "Garry Shider Tribute" on Bootsy's "Tha Funk Capital of The World" album.

They're Legends for a reason, lol.

I hope she puts this song in her current set lists since she keeps changing her set list a bit lol
