One of the places where I get gas has a Muzak type system fixed on 50s/60s music.
Stopped last night and they were playing Daydream.
Brought back great memories of seeing them walking around "The Village" when I was a kid.

They had a pretty remarkable run in a very brief time. "Nashville Cats" is probably my favourite.

Yes, they were fun in lilting soft rock kind of way. Sebastian played a zither ferchrissakes, not exactly an instument that moves the booty. Supposedly their name was a veiled hard drug reference but their vibe always seemed squeaky clean to me.

tA, hope you don't feel I'm hijackijng the thread by posting a Spoonful cover (Summer in the City) but I was so surprised by this when I bought this Inner Circle reggae album back in 1980 that I wanted to share it with you all.

When I picked up the record I was expecting a continuation of the disco reggae hybrid sound of their previous joint, Everything is Great, but I guess Island Records wanted to see how a more rock sounding album would sell in the US so we got this one entitled New Age Music.

Besides rocking Summer in the City really hard they also covered the Beatles Carry that Weight in a more traditional reggae groove and Yvonne Elliman's If I Can't Have You from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

See what you think:

I've also seen John Sebastian play autoharp. Very rootsy instruments.

Interesting cover by Inner Circle. They took a few liberties with the lyrics. lol

It's a universal song that lends itself to being covered.

My favorite would be the one by...

...Quincy Jones

Funny you mentioned that because every time I hear "Daydream", I'm always finding myself in the 1960s hippie scene, smoking trees, and just getting along with EVERYBODY! lol Of course I'd have my fro on. lol cool fro

I LOVE these guys. They honestly don't get enough credit, but they have so many songs that are so popular, even little kids sing'em.

Just one of those bands you can't help but like.

I agree. They hardly get discussed in the realm of psychedelic pop/rock, which they helped pioneer by the way. Like always, and this is not against them because I dig them as well, the Beatles are always mentioned as pioneers of that sound but I give it to the Lovin' Spoonful and the Beach Boys, both of whom come from here in the U.S. cool

Classic example of '60s Pure Pop!
The antithesis of the "heavy music" of that day.

I should send you a photo of my 'Fro days...lol

Would anyone recommend diving into their albums? All I've got is the twenty-six track greatest hits album that was released in 2000. It's a very solid listen but I was never really motivated to dig any deeper. I see that their six John Sebastian era albums have recently been released a twofer's, I'll have to keep an eye out and see if I can scoop them up at a decent price.

confuse I was only aware of 4 actual "Lovin Spoonful" albums...

...that included John Sebastian.

I guess including the two soundtrack albums...

[img:$uid]http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drl900/l973/l97387twjlu.jpg[/img:$uid] [img:$uid]http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drl900/l973/l97394dz5c6.jpg[/img:$uid]

...their names are on could add up to six.

To be honest, I never purchased any of their albums during the time period they were active. Only 45s.
Since the were a band that got played on AM radio, they were considered a singles act.
The rule back then was you generally only bought albums from bands that got played on FM.

You get more of John Sebastian "the songwriter" from the 2nd album on.

Yup, the soundtrack albums are included in the total.

Here are links to the reissues. They are single discs except for the first one which is two discs.

Do You Believe in Magic/Daydream:

What's Up, Tiger Lily?/Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful:

You're a Big Boy Now/Everything Playing:

Now, if only there were some decent reissues of The Turtles then we would really be cookin'.
