So Janet Jacksons Decades Of Accomplishments And Impact(Influence) On Most Of Todays Generation Of Stars Cant Be...

Acknowledged because of 2 failed recent albums .. a failed Tour and the lack of massive hits she has once had in earlier years ...well this is the logic i see most people use when talking/trying to discredit undermine janet ...Its like basically history has been rewritten to exclude all of her contriubtions to popular culture ...Probably biggest Star of The 90s Janet ruled the airwaves from the time Control hits shelves till the superbowl faisco(I hate to pull the superbowle card because janet fans are always accused of using this but truth is no other artist has been blackballed the way janet was..bring blscklisted by the industry you work in cant be an easy thing..and if janet wasnt a legend already this would have ended her )..Even after that she had moderate number 1 hits onr&b and dance charts.. something alot of her contempraries havent been able to do

She soldout arenas and stadiums all over the world ..but one failed tour and two failed albums..i (i said two because damita jo went 3x platinum) and all of a sudden. Janet Jackson is a Non factor...her contributions are overlooked by the same print and mass media that non only called her Madonnas only real female competition and event Queen in may instances..

I see people Questioning Her legendary Status..i ask is she less of a legend because of her recent failures to gain commercia success in some of her projects.. .i.e last few albums and tour ..

or is it because of the "supposedly" low quality material of work that she has released recently?

i say supposedly low quality because besides Her last two albums.. she has put out an incredible body of work which should have been enough for her to be a very acclaimed musician ...

Prince has not had a very successful and some may add decent album in decades but that hasnt dimished his previous contributions to the music world or his body of work

so if indeed you feel that Janet last few works wer not good enough..why do you feel it has dimished her iconic and legendary status ? A double standard because shes a woman? and one of color ?

Are the standards different for her because of her gender or race..

Madonna's last few albums have been nothing to write home about either...but shes still regarded as a legend here and everwhere..is it because they have been more comercially succesful ..

Her ability to go on a $400mill tour is that what make her a legend because if you say influence...Janet has influence as much if not more people than she has... (seanman will prove this)

I actually think that had Janet Jackson grossed A $400mill tour and a very successful set of recent albums alot of people will be singing different tunes.... even if the quality of those albums werent that good.....hell i know alot of people her that wouldnt say stuff they say about Janet if we were in 2001

Conclusion..If you consider madonna a legend and you dont Janet..there a bias of some sort working

Commercial failure of a veteran doesnt mean the person isnt worth being a legend

thoughts

Actually... Madonna's second most recent album is considered one of the best dance albums of the 00s and is easily one of her best. Although the 2008 follow up is more split on reactions, but it still managed a top 5 hit 25 years into her career.

Do I think Janet is an Icon and a legend? Yes.

Do I think the last decade has diminished that? Obviously.

Although I was never agrees with the media's backlash at Janet over the superbowl incident, that stunt pretty much erased all of her classics from radio. Add that to the fact that nothing she has done since has had any luck on radio means that she is pretty much non-existant on radio these days. That has alot to do with her diminished status as an icon. People have forgotten about her classics and for the most part haven't heard anything new. To the average person she is the sister of MJ who popped a boob out on TV.

Janet's at least as influential as Madonna. They're just as different in terms of artistry as MJ and Prince but they each have made an impact on those that came after them. Janet's videos, I would contend, are far more influential than Madonna's.

That's not just Janet Jackson, that's like the argument used by detractors for almost every pop stars ever. I like her, but she's not that special to have such an argument created specially for her.

i will not dispute but some would again argue ..that damita jo is one of her best releases.. have you heard that album?? sadly the superbowl fiasco shadowed that masterpiece ..really solid work from her

aretha franklin does not even have the selling power of janet or the ability to fill venues that janet can but she is still considered a legend

Aretha's got nothing to do with what has happened to Janet. lol Aretha never had a blown-up incident in front of 90 million viewers like Janet lol

Anyways, her status is just starting to be repaired as an icon/legend with this concert. I actually think her material from her last three albums and the means of her promoting it diminished her reputation. I think she finally got a grip of the situation once Discipline straight up flopped despite opening at No. 1.

With this concert tour, it's just starting to repair her image in the consciousness of the fickle public despite where she performs at. Of course right now she can't trust bigger venues seeing as she was ill-prepared for the 2008 Rock Wit U tour.

Seriously, just went to respond and say the same thing when I saw your response. Aretha's name does not belong in the same sentence as Janet. That is a losing proposition right there.

Conclusion..If you consider madonna a legend and you dont Janet..there a bias of some sort working

Madonna’s worldwide album sales: over 300 million. She’s the top selling female artists of all

time worldwide. She’s sold 64 million in the US alone, and according to Billboard Magazine is the #2 pop artist of all time, behind only The Beatles.

Janet’s worldwide album sales: over 100 million. 26 million in the US. So about 1/3 of Madonna’s overall sales (and good enough for #11 among female artists in the US.)

Madonna’s #1 singles in America: 12

Madonna’s Top 10 hits in America: 36

Janet’s #1 singles in America: 9

Janet’s Top 10 hits in America: 28

Madonna’s #1 albums in America: 7

Madonna’s Top 10 albums in America: 18, including compilations

Janet’s #1 albums in America: 6

Janet’s Top 10 albums in America: 9, including compilations

So Janet has sold about 1/3 of the albums that Madonna has, and Madonna trumps her in every chart category. Madonna’s last tour, The Stick & Sweet Tour, grossed $280 million, making it the most successful solo tour by any artist, ever. The previous high? Madonna’s prior tour, Confessions. Janet’s last tour? Not so much.

Janet was hugely successful in her prime; but Madonna is an iconic force with an astonishing nearly 30 years of massive success behind her. Whether or not Janet is a “legend” is arguable; without her famous last name, it’s doubtful she’s have gotten a 2nd look by any reasonable record company exec. But Madonna is in an entirely different class than any other female artist, including Janet.

^ Nah I think she is a legend. Control and Rhythm Nation 1814 should be enough to assert that that's exactly what she is. Those two albums made a huge contribution to pop/R&B. It made legends out of three people actually - Janet, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

But seriously, Aretha is about 50yrs + into a career. Surely you don't expect her to be selling decent numbers. It's a wonder that she is still releasing. Hoever, she is still getting honours bestowed on her and still touring even if venues are small. Many of the people who started around her time can't claim the same thing.

Aretha's legend status has noting to do with her sales, imo. If someone doesn't know why she is considered an icon and a legend then...

and i have love for Janet.

^ You know and it took her about 25 years to get a million selling album though she already had like about 50 hit singles before then. falloff Back then, blockbuster sales especially for someone in Aretha's time was not even possible as it was when Janet released Control. lol

I do believe that Janet is a legend. I also think that Madonna has had the media on her side for the last decade or so and has been able to enlist them to essentially hype her as being almost 'godlike' which is a laugh.

She's gone through several flop seasons, controversies and has a non-existant movie career but she's been good at crafting her own story in the press which is something that Janet, Whitney and Mariah have not been good at/and or chose to play along with.

Janet is slowing working her way back with her co-starring in 2 moderately hit movies even if they were Tyler Perry productions, doing the media circuit and this tour.

The jury is still out on whether she can get on radio. I think anything she puts out is good for a #1 cd if the right week is picked, and decent first week sales and then the jury is out.

Exactly, she came out and peaked at a different era when everything was so different from how we know it now. Artists back then put out more cds, released more singles, had labels play games with their money and accounting, airplay was different, music was segregated, R&B was called Black Music. I mean really etc etc

Janet's how old now? 45? I don't know. Maybe she has it in her for one more hit but I don't think she should do an album that tries to have a hit and filler, she should focus on once again creating a concept project like some of her albums were. I don't know what will happen in Madonna's case. The game has changed so much and she's about to be 53 in a few days so I don't know if either of them could get a radio hit and I think with the way radio is now, both of them would be wise to avoid it.

Yeah and when Aretha did cross over, it was seen as a pivotal moment in the black community. This is why Aretha has been treated with such reverence because she didn't "cross over", people "crossed over" to her. Same with the Motown, Stax and Philly artists from that time period.

Did you post this because People were overlooking Janet on that Britney Vma 2011 video?

I thought I saw your name up there?

anywho. It's because she's balck. A Black woman. Plain and simple.

This shit was dawning on me last night when I saw that promo.

It's funny how when Janet makes music that sounds ahead of it's time and makes music videos ahead of it's time no little CHILD from this generation wants to acknowledge it. But here comes Britney, a blonde hair little girl, america's sweetheart and ripps off everything janet does, and low and behold becomes damn near more popular than Janet herself. disbelief

Well, Madonna didn't really get decent radio play with her last few cds. Her hit '4mins' was aided by Justin Timberlake and even that in the grand scheme of things didn't have over 125mil AI like Rihanna nd Katy Perry are getting even with Justin.

Madonna will probably try to hook up with a hot , young artist with her first release to get on radio. Ameria is ageist when it come sto playing woman on the radio over 40. Celebration got no play. The 2 cds before that Hard Candy and COTDF weren't really block busters in the US. She's does better globally where European countries aren't as ageist on the radio.

I know Janet better stay away from those sexual lyrics. No one wants to hear that from a 45yr old.

Dead..madonna's album sales are not over 300mill..what kinda pot are you smoking....thats supposed to be her combined record sales meaning including singles and what not but ever over 50% of that cant really be accounted for it highly inflated

secondly Madonna has released over 56 albums..compilations ,boxsets rereleases ..Janet has released only 12

thirdly janet has sold 36million albums in the USA and not 26....she has been undercertified by 10mill(why she doesnt want to pay to have them recertified i have no idea )

thirdly Janet has 10 not 9 number 1 hits and 27 top 10 hits.. and 140mill combined records solds..for this figure reciepts are available. and not this is from most her 6 very very huge studio albums

Janet still holds the record for the most successful debut tour of all time... Has madonna been more succcessful absolutely no doubt about that.. but dont undermine or deminsh that of janet

the only thing Madonna really has over Janet is her two recent tours....

I doubt it with Madonna for some reason. There's been rumors she and Rihanna were doing something but as far as I know that's still a rumor. Besides with William Orbit and Martin Solveig on board, I doubt Madonna wants a radio hit in the U.S. (we know Europe will constantly play her because she's got such a huge fan base in Europe anyway). As for Janet, I think she'll just focus on music to get people moving and an occasional ballad. If she will include at least one sexual song is questionable.
