The Great Pagoda of Classic & Progressive ROCK

[img:$uid]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/jbodine/vfiles22883.jpg[/img:$uid]

Around the neighborhood
They stare and grin
As if they live their lives
Just to help maintain the state we’re in

We're not talkin' wimpy-rock.
It seems that currently, almost any group that utilizes electric guitars qualifies as a ROCK band even though they don't really ROCK.

So no Metal-screechers, no shoe-gazers, no emo-whiners, no snot-hurling punks.
We're talking acts that actually ROCK (RED-HOT like the pictured pagoda).

Come correct. wink

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Kicking things off with a set from my favorite current rockers, King's X.
A track (with one exception) from each of their 11 studio releases.

From Out of the Silent Planet (1988)...

...King

From Gretchen Goes To Nebraska (1989)...

...Pleiades

From Faith Hope Love (1990)...

...Fine Art of Friendship

From King's X (1992)...

...Dream in My Life

From Dogman (1994)...

...Flies and Blue Skies

From Ear Candy (1996)...

...Life Going By

From Tape Head (1998)...

...Little Bit of Soul

From Please Come Home...Mr.Bulbous (2000)...

...Bitter Sweet

From Manic Moonlight (2001)...

...The Other Side

From Ogre Tones (2005)...

...Fly

From XV (2008)...

...Broke & Go Tell Somebody

I don't know anything about Rock music so I'm a little hesitant to respond. However, I just listened to this first song and it sounds like something Bon Jovi would make (I'm a Jersey girl so I have heard some of their music at least). What makes them stand out, in your opinion, from other bands?

Jersey Girl? What exit? (says NY guy). smile

Interesting observation.
Bon Jovi would have been one of the last bands i'd have linked them to.

But to me, the fact that a 3 piece band can be so good at skillful playing, have a powerful sound, great harmonies and songwriting is what makes them stand out in my book.

To be honest, I didn't believe just 3 guys could pull off this material live.

That is until I heard them. Very impressive.

Keep in mind that this is from their first album done in 1988.
The clips are posted in chronological order so that you can get a sense of their progress over time.

You don't listen to Rock at all?

Only that "rock" that Prince makes biggrin . I don't own a rock cd, but I have liked some Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Under The Bridge), Soundgarden (Black Hole Sun), Metallica (The Unforgiven), Jakob Dylan or his band (One Head Light - is this rock?) and some other stuff that I cant' think of right now. I like some rock, but I don't buy it.

I just remembered that I own a greatest hits cd from the band "Ambrosia". Is this rock???

And my exit is the first on your left biggrin

Hmmm...what i've heard of Jakob Dylan sounds like maybe Pop/Rock at best.
Ambrosia to me is definitely in the Pop genre.

Well, give the rest of the King's X tracks (and the other stuff that gets posted) a listen.
As someone who doesn't normally listen to this type of music, I'd like your opinion.

confuse...Btw, I thought all those Jersey exits were numbered?

neutral Ok, on the 'Classic" tip, I'm submitting early Three Dog Night ('69-'70), and I'll tell you why.......

(Actually, I'm sure tA already knows.....)

most people only get to hear "Joy To World" and "Black and White", "Shambala", etc....

but this is how I'll always remember them....this track was originally done by Free...but that was before TDN put their (collective) foot through it...I love their band, especially Jimmy Greenspoon on organ and keys...

Three Dog Night - "Woman"

and I wish there was a better version of this tune up on youtube, cause this video sucks lol' but other versions are gone--well, you geta basic idea, anyway...

As per usual, we've got this uncanny musical ESP thing happening.
In my Classic Rock category cue, posts were planned for Free & Bad Company.
Then to simplify things a bit, I decided to do a Paul Rodgers retrospective because his voice is the common denominator in both bands. In addition to that, for my personal taste, he's also the definitive voice for that type of Blues/R&B based Rock.

So without further ado...

no no no! No way dude.
You never need to wait on me in any of my threads.
You're always right on point.

TDN was bangin'.
As a quick sidebar, i've put a band together for a 60s private party I have to play in a few weeks. One of the tunes in the set is Chest Fever.

The arrangement I put together is The Band's version for the most part.

However i'll be using TDN's vibe on the bridge rather than The Band's Salvation Army approach. smile

This is one song. The uploader had to split it in parts because of the Youtube time limits.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
