I'm only familiar with him via the Woodstock performance.

Great stuff.

I saw him on an old Married With Children episode recently. But I don't know much about his music though.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

IMO, it's not a good bulk of his best stuff.

This is a good get...

If you find that you like it, you can backtrack and get specific albums.

He was a staple of free-form FM radio back in the day.

Nice. cool

I'm pissed that his version of Run Shaker Life isn't on YouTube.

Guess i'll have to make my own damn video. confused

That thumb thing probably has a lot to do with the fact that he uses an open D (or sometimes D minor) tuning.

Barre-chord city. wink

Yep... that's his mainstay tuning.

Mr. Havens did a Q&A years ago after a performance at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Someone asked him about his playing style and technique: one of things Havens' mentioned was his hands were always huge (and he has HUGE mitts) even as a child so, playing most guitar chords were a challenge. Havens' said he was missing around realized playing barre chords would allow him to play around the fretboard a lil bit easier. By the way, his finger nails on both hands are super long and health.

I'm sure Guild builds Havens' guitar necks to his specification. I don't know, sometime I envy men who have big hands / long fingers and then sometimes I don't. lol

Wow! I was a huge Richie Havens fan early on. I'm sorry to say I haven't been as attentive in the more recent years. I saw him back in the late 60's at a club in DC (maybe The [old] Bohemian Caverns?). Anyway, he played his guitar so hard, he had broken strings flying everywhere! smile I've only seen him live once since then. I do own several of his early albums on vinyl. I need to get back into him...... Thanks, tA!
