Yeah for me, I wasn't judging it by which was more New Jack Swing, they are both New Jackson Swing to me I just realized I picked 7 for each album so I guess I do love them both equally for different reasons. And RN happens to be my favourite Janet era

Those aren't New Jack, but The Gypsys & You Said were. I've never heard Jackie's, except one song though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Likewise, I'm crazy about mj, sometimes more than life itself though I've learned to talk myself out of that for my own sanity. The way I think Bad is the best MJ era, RN is that for me for Janet. I was always crazy for that era for all the same reasons I listed Bad, though she was best looking during the Janet. era. I love the most videos, choreography, performances, looks and style, songs from the album, vocals, subject matter, remixes from this era. I have to admit I like Janet remixes overall over MJ's too, cause he's such a perfectionist that not many people can recapture how he crafted his material, while Janet's are easy to remix. So yeah, I'm an mj and janet "stan" though also more down to earth about it than some, and know there is no one like mj.

I wish people would stop making RN out to be a "New Jack Swing" album. It has very fleeting NJS-esque moments on certain tracks ("Alright," "State of the World," "The Knowledge," and maybe the title track), but the vast majority of that album is standard late 80s dance-y Pop/R&B.
Dangerous - because of Teddy Riley - better 'deserves' that title. But even the non Teddy Riley/non-NJS songs like "Who Is It," "Give Into Me," and "Black or White" are erroneously slapped with the New Jack Swing label.
Too many people have a penchant for randomly attaching the 'New Jack Swing' label on any hyper-tempo'd R&B song from 1987 to 1993. It's annoying and not completely accurate.

Like I said, I wasn't thinking of them as NJS when deciding what I like better, I hear more of the Jackson sound than NJS, if not both. A lot of people forget RN was finished being recorded in about 88' though so it's no wonder there are NJS influences since it was still developing in mainstream, but Janet was also finding a new formula/concept to work on with jimmy & terry since that worked so well. Plus, I believe Jam & Lewis were always brilliant at merging a variety of sounds and styles. On Control, it was Minneapolis, funk, freestyle, electropop, r&b,pop hip hop, synth-pop. On RN, it was NJS,Minneapolis, New Wave, R&B, rap/hip hop, rock, quiet storm/soft rock, pop with funk undertones.

The songs "Rhythm Nation" & "The Knowledge" are cousins to MJ's "Tabloid Junkie". U can her those songs influence all over that track..... I will not pick between those 2 its not fair. But Rhythm Nation"s sounds were groundbreaking & unmatched. MJ tried to duplicate it on The "Dangerous" Cd.

1. To my ears, The only filler on Dangerous is Keep The Faith. Michael should have kept that off the album.
2. Since Michael's death, I developed a change of heart about Heal The World. But when he was alive, I used to bitch a lot about this track because it sounded too much like the same old We Are The World-type anthems.

I strongly agree with you about History & Invincible!

I can't listen to Heal the World after his death, I would have felt bad choosing Escapade over that before, but it is what it is. I want to have a good time and stop sulking in misery.

Heal The World is corny, sappy pop schmaltz. I rather listen to Whitney sing the Greatest Love Of All. Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND Chaka Khan = FIRE Sade = WATER the ELEMENTS of MUSIC

Assholes. I feel more and more like a cornball...or was.

I rather say FTW (F*** The World) and listen Michael's They Don't Care About Us & Janet's New Agenda back to back than to listen to chocolate valley girl Whitney.

nooo don't hate on Heal The World :*(

The irony of your statement is that it was Janet Jackson's work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the Control album that ushered in the New Jack Swing era in the first place. lol So yes, Rhythm Nation is a new jack swing album. One with the influence of the Minneapolis Sound, but a new jack swing album nevertheless. That 'standard late 80s dance-y Pop/R&B' was New Jack Swing in its infancy that her Control album introduced in the first place. =/
That being said...Rhythm Nation has always been my one of my favorite JJ albums right next to the Velvet Rope. Even so, the one thing that plagues Rhythm Nation is the same fucking thing that plagues almost every Janet Jackson album: too many damn interludes. There are 20 tracks, but almost half of them are fucking interludes. She has so many interludes on her albums that when my playlist is on shuffle that's all that plays from her. I'm starting to wonder if she has more interludes, in total, than songs. lol
Some of the non-singles are pretty forgettable and as much as I like the album it's kinda samey in terms of the music itself aside from a few standouts (I guess production??!), and it sounds like the music of it's era definitely. Not a bad thing though, but the songs are dear to me since I grew up with them. I think her later albums did a better job of not sounding so much like the 'same beat, but with different lyrics.'
Even though I was aware of the singles from Dangerous, I never got to hear the entire album when I was younger though so I don't really have the same emotional attachment to them. Hearing it much later, I can appreciate Michael finally taking off the chains of his music from the 80s and really becoming more comfortable with himself as an artist. Someone who worked with him in the studio at at that time said he had no idea what he wanted to do for the album, so it seems like he did everything. I may not like all of the songs in it as much, but I prefer the fact that a lot of them reach into other genres more than Rhythm Nation did. Also, I like MJ's spin on the pop music trends at the time as well. I still prefer the non-singles from Dangerous (as little as there may be lol).
In this case I would say that album wise: Rhythm Nation > Dangerous In terms of the actual songs: Dangerous > Rhythm Nation
(Which seemed to have been my answer from the HIStory v. The Velvet Rope thread as well.)

There are some really good tracks on Dangerous, but Rhythm Nation is such a great compact album, it's one of my favourites ever. No filler on this album.
By the way, Rhythm Nation also has great remixes, I remember buying every 12" from that album.

^ I own so many RN singles, I recently found a whole bunch I couldn't find for years though I bought some years ago too!!! I love the State of the World remixes too, I was lucky to find those. And the Shep Pettibone mixes of Miss You Much and Escapade.

I have about 17 RN singles

I love Heal the World. So what if it's a simple song with easy cheesy words? So is We Are The World. It makes it easier for foreigners and young children to sing along. I love the message of the song; save it for our children...

Mine too, there's something tender about it, I especially love the key changes in it, it sounds hopeful. After his death, it took exactly a year to listen to it again and when I did put it on, I was bawling :*(
