The Bangles' New Album, Sweetheart of The Sun

The Bangles will release the guitar-driven Sweetheart of the Sun, their first new album in eight years, on September 13.

The album aims to celebrate the love of rock’s golden age that originally drew the band members together, balanced with their trademark vocal harmonies. I was lucky enough to hear the album in advance, and fans can expect The Bangles’ trademark glassy folk-rock harmonies alongside high-energy garage rock rave-ups, and lots of gloriously jangly, psychedelic-tinged guitar.

Guitarist/vocalist Vicki Peterson says the album is inspired by California. “As we were finishing the record, we started to realize there was a unifying theme – paradise lost in Southern California, the perception juxtaposed with the reality of it,” Peterson said in a press statement. Guitarist/vocalist Susanna Hoffs elaborates: “L.A. is like paradise – the sun shines 360 days a year, the flowers are always in bloom – but meanwhile, so many people are walking around alienated, depressed and anxious.”

The album was recorded by Matthew Sweet, who has recorded and toured with Hoffs, and worked with her in Austin Powers’ band Ming Tea. It was mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Wilco).

Sweetheart of the Sun track listing:

“Annalee (Sweetheart of the Sun)"
"Lay Yourself Down"
"Under a Cloud"
"I Will Never be Through with You"
"Through Your Eyes"
"Ball & Chain"
"One of Two"
"What a Life"
"Mesmerized"
"Circles in the Sky"
"Sweet and Tender Romance"
"Open My Eyes"

Last time I saw them in 2009 live they had a male bassist. Susanna looked fantastic and fit.

Great news! Long overdue and kinda out of the blue! Looking forward to seeing them again again! The last time I saw them, in '08, Abby Travis was their bassist. I only saw them once, in '04, with Michael.
