D'Angelo Could Have Been Bigger Than R.Kelly.

I'm not happy that D'Angelo couldn't maintain himself. Dude could've been bigger than R.Kelly.

He had the talent. The Image. The Substance. Great Songwriter. Father Of Neo-Soul.

All D'Angelo needed was guidance.

No he couldn't have. D'Angelo has no image or "star" appeal about him, and never would have crossed over to a mainstream audience. Despite that video of him looking like he was naked, he never seemed comfortable on camera.

Do you think D'Angelo was more creative than R.Kelly?

Not really. D'Angelo was just more "serious"-seeming. R. Kelly is a more accomplished writer and producer, for himself and for other artists.

Oh yeah, he did write "Your Not Alone" and "Fortunate".

"You Are Not Alone" was plagiarized!

I never heard about that. But R.Kelly was still credited as the writer right?

Yep, but he ripped off the melody:

Would'a could'a should'a. It has not happened. D' Angelo is fine in his own right, but, R. Kelly is in a league that's his own. Robert is a beast of an artist!

Who cares about bigger? He's already better. And that's coming from a Kells fan.

D'Angelo is miles ahead of Kelly. He had the opportunity, and he missed it.

Poor D'Angelo. He was great... but he seems to have lost it. Will he ever finish his third album? A video like Untitled (How Does It Feel?) would be a very funny joke now: have you seen pictures of the fatty D'Angelo?

But why choose when you can have both? They did work together this once. The R has a pretty prominent part on this classic D song:

Always like that joint. Very inspirational. Vs. threads are pointless imo.

Oh....and for anyone to write-off an artist of D'Angelo's caliber is sadly mistaken. And I say that as someone who's pissed that he's taken forever to release something new. His talents are God given and won't be taken away. Now, whether or not he ever gets his life together is another story. The gift is still there though. Trust.wink

D'Angelo is really a completey different artist from R.Kelly. Not even really in the same genre almost.

R. Kelly's songwriting skills are maximized for Top 40/R&B crossover radio. Thats specifically what he writes for.

D'Angelo not so much. He is a different kind of artist,....more complex. Less about commercialism and more about artistic statement.

He never had a truly big hit, like R. Kelly has.

So unless D'Angelo could have developed his songwriting to have more mass appeal, I doubt he could have been "bigger".

And who knows, maybe that last album was all he had left in him. ??

D'Angelo should have reached further in the game,...but, hey , things happen.

Yes to D'angelo and no to R. Kelly(never was a fan). Like others have said 2 different artist. I too am tired of comparisons. You are going to like what you like and dislike, so what is the point?

I'm not comparing them. I'm asking if D'Angelo would've stayed on a straight path, could he have had the same legacy as Kells?

I'm sorry for confusing you guys.

We'll have to agree to disagree. D'Angelo may only have 2 albums, but they're both better than any of R. Kelly's albums.

No, they're not. I used to like D' Angelo back in the 90's bur he's nothing compared to R. Kelly.

Voodoo is good but overrated. Kinda like Lauryn Hill's album.
