Cameo vs The Time? Really? Cameo funks the sh*t out of the Time. I like the Time but COME ON. Its no contest. I'm talking pre "Word Up" Cameo.

Wayne Cooper > every singer from the MN camp. Yeah, I know that's a bold statement but I'm sticking to it.

Nobody in that whole camp (including Prince) could get into the same stratosphere as Wayne.

I don't know about that. We don't really have much to go on, plus we don't know how much he was guided and shaped by Larry. Incredibly talented yes, but I can't co-sign that last statement!

I'm really hoping that the solo album Wayne did that Charlie Singleton produced will one day get released.

Who is this "we" you speak of? I don't have to hear a whole catalog of music to know that say, Stevie Wonder is a better singer than Trey Songz. I have heard enough from Prince and enough from Wayne Cooper to know that Wayne was a better vocalist. We just have to agree to disagree.

I was not interested in replying until I saw your comment., "pre Word Up". You know what the fuck u r talking about. It's a shame that the world did not recognize them until Word Up.(one of their worst songs by a long shot) Their entire catalouge is the epitome of Funk. (up to Word Up). Knights of the Sound Table, Single Life, Feel Me, Aligator Woman, Cameosis and Ugly Ego defines what Funk is. Slave is nasty and due props but their catalouge is a little thin compared to Larry and the fellas. As far as The Time is concerned, they are some smooth assed motherfuckers hired to play the funky assed songs that Prince wrote. Not to take anything away from their debut and What Time is it?, I love those 2 albums to death, but I am forced to put them in perspective after learning that Prince wrote and played everything on those 2 albums and they basically learned the music for touring purposes, changes their mythology considerably. But while we are on the subject of funk, let it be known that The Ohio Players was the precursor to all that was funky in the 1970's. biggrin

Cameo. Love both groups though.

BTW, while Cameo was obviously before they crossed over with Word Up, that album and some of their later work is still good. And I'll always have a soft spot for "Candy." love

That is correct. But when Steve Arrington left after Showtime, only the first 3 were worth a shit. The other ones were worse than anyhting that came after Word Up.

Respecting the implication that Cameo albums released subsequent to "Word Up!" were not good as clearly YOUR opinion.

Machismo, Real Men Wear Black, Emotional Violence and Sweet Sexy Thing were definitely the darkest days of one of the best funk bands to ever grace this planet. Though Nothing Less Than Love is my favorite post Word Up song. It's like a diamond in a bowl of shit.

I've enjoyed all those albums you've just listed. All I'm suggesting is that you acknowledge that your opinion is only that; and doesn't speak for everyone as if it were fact. Personally, I would never offer my opinion as an absolute truth.

So then I'm curious, what is it about "In The Face of Funk" that doesn't allow you to hear it as an exceptional recording? As opinions go, this was a particularly strong album (IMHO).

Cameo - In The Face of Funk

Most comments if not all comments based in forums such as this are mostly opinions.. that should be most obvious. The decline of Cameo coincided with the replacing of musicians with electronic instruments, my opinion. I also think that Single life was the last great Cameo album, in spite of the drum machines and synthesizers, again my opinion. In regards to your last querry, what was so great about it?

In my opinion, this album is not the worst of post Word Up albums, but certainly not the greatest. The songs where Larry included rap muddied my listening pleasure. It still doesn't compete with anything like Single Life or it's predecessors, in my opinion. But not so bad after 18 albums. Still can't touch Word Up in spite of the single Word Up. Just my opinion. But it is no worse than Style. Which seems to be odd man out when discussing Single Life and its predecessors. Just my opinion. The only reason that I am so strongly opinionated when it comes to Cameo is because they were one of the few groups where I liked 90%-100% of each and every album.(prior to Word Up) Anything less seemed like a terrible album to me. Just my opinion. biggrin

Cameo - In The Face of Funk

I dug a few songs from this album but nothing special. I like Slyde, BSU, You Are My Love,

and Don't Say It's Over. I actually liked Sweet Sexy Thang as a whole better than this album.

Out of their post Atlanta Artists albums my favorite song and their funkiest imo is You Make

Me Crazy. I saw them play it live once and that thang STAAAANK

Yeah you might wanna stay in that box for a minute PDogz on that

note. lol

I do like how Cameo added a different twist to it even sampling Larry Dodson's voice

but i would still take Slave's version here.

Generally speaking, they seem more focused on clever quips, nasty retorts, and with being “right” in the “Prince: Music and More” forums. I usually only travel to that side when there's something specific I want to address, and not for broader conversation.
