A musician is someone who writes, performs, or creates music, so yes, Janet is a musician.

No, she's not.

There's a difference between a musician and entertainer. Janet is the latter.

You're definition of musician goes against all the other proper definitions of the word. I'm not the one lying to myself here. I barely even like Janet. lol

How is that ignorance? She has had two massive albums GLOBALLY as have Huey and Cyndi. Are you looking at things only from the blinkered US standpoint?

It's ignorance because I don't see anyone in the pop industry today still emulating Huey and Cyndi (well, Gaga reminds me a lot of Cyndi, but I digress). On the contrary, Janet's performance style and look is still present and alive in today's pop performers. Whenever you see Ciara in a hat and suit, twirling a handkerchief around as she dances, Janet has already done it. Whenever you see Kelly Rowland performing a slinky number on-stage in a big-brimmed hat and boustier with fitting black slacks and tight choreography, Janet has already done it. Rhianna's big, curly red hairdo that everyone is so gung-ho over? Janet did it in 1997. Britney performing a tease on-stage in concert with a feather boa wrapped over her shoulders? Janet did it on the Velvet Rope tour. The young girl from The Vampire Diaries has remade a couple of Janet songs, and Janet's music STILL gets sampled by various artists in the hip-hop genre. Janet's industry records are not only impressive, but most of them still stand. Who else has had an album that, from a singles-released standpoint, can stand alongside Thriller and Born in the USA? Who else can claim the title of most successful debut tour? A tour that travelled the WORLD? Janet has done film, TV, music, a book...do you think a book put out by Huey Lewis or Cyndi Lauper would make it to #1 on the NY Times Bestsellers list?

As for that "blinkered US standpoint", not so. Plenty of artists who weren't born on the shores of the USA have cited Janet as an inspiration. Peter Andre based his "Defender" video off of Rhythm Nation. Kylie Minogue is a fan of Janet's, and even sampled "Control" in one of her own songs. Some of the Spice Girls have commented on their respect for Janet. Robyn has covered "When I Think of You" in concert. Members of the British Boyband JLS attended Janet's recent London concert. When she and Tyler Perry showed up in London for the premeire of For Colored Girls, there were tons of screaming fans outside clamouring for her autograph. As for her latest tour, I've seen plenty of people from Australia to South America on various sites who are dying to have her re-visit their cities, because it's been so long since she's toured there. She is also huge in the Asian market, as well. She still holds the record for fastest sell-out of the Tokyo Dome.

She's been honored at the World Music Awards. Check out the reaction from these German fans, beginning at 1:54...

Janet has toured the world extensively in the past, so why some folks are quick to claim that she's a virtual unknown in other countries other than the United States is a mystery to me.

If you can read this, and look at the plethora of music videos that I posted on the previous page (which only scratch the surface) and still say that she's about as legendary as Huey and Cyndi, then that's on you.

[Edited 8/8/11 11:41am]

I'm a huge mj and janet fan, though I agree she's known everywhere, she may be known for her name/jackson family association than her work a lot of times too, though I know she does really well on her tours. Maybe for some of them she is the closest to michael, but for me, she is her own person too and I love her for her. Thanks for posting that clip again, it's one of my favourites, and I love that hairstyle, she didn't have it by the time I saw the Velvet Rope tour. That was my first concert and best one I ever attended in person to date.

I dont have my head up anyones ass, First off.

Secondly In WHAT way shape or form did I Downplay JJ and TL??

I simply said that THEY WOULD NOT BE POPULAR WITHOUT EACHOTHER. that goes for Terry and Jimmy too. You're basically making the woman sound like a straight up puppet.

I agree that they helped each other gain such success, however IMO based on JJ and TL's talents and musicianship, coming fresh out of the Minneapolis scene which was on and popping at the time and eager to work on other projects outside of the Time, I believe they would have done well for themselves anyway, as songwriters and producers even without working with Janet. Maybe not as big but who knows, I think they would have done well. I just cant' say the same for Janet's career without JJ and TL's on her own, that doesn't take away the fact that as a team they were very successful.

[Edited 8/8/11 16:27pm]

alrighty then. That's what I was trying to point out, In my opinion they would have been successful without Jan But no where near the amount of success they had with Jan.

What was pissing me off is that people kept trying to make Janet's first 2 albums the reason why Terry and Jimmy should have Full credit for her songs, knowing good and damn well Janet wasn't even allowed to get involved with the records.

lol Trust me, it's not even worth it. But, you are right, Janet is a musician. AND an artist. AND a performer. AND a singer. AND a dancer, an actress, a business woman, author, producer, lyricist, and all around bad ass bitch. And she's a legend, too. The end.

Oops, sorry about the spelling mistake.

And Janet is a musician, Britney Spears and Aaliyah technically are musicians under the entertainment field.

I think we are basically on the same page. I just think that when we are talking about Janet Jackson's music that it is impossible to overstate how important Jam and Lewis were to her success. If Janet is a legend it is largely due to the music that Jam and Lewis created together.

Fixed wink I have to respectively disagree. If Janet was more of an puppet artist like say, Britney Spears or a Whitney Houston I would have to agree. These artist generally do not contribute creatively to the process of songwriting or music production as far as I know. That's not Janet. Janet and Jimmy both have talked about how she may bring a melody or a lyric to the studio and they flesh out the rest as a team. Or, Jam & Lewis brings something to the table and she adds to it or take away what she wants as the recording artist. Her album co-writing and co-producing credits alone dispute your claim.

Were they instrumental in her success, of course. But you can't discredit what it is she brings to the process either.

I just want to point out that Jam and Lewis were TOTALLY responsible for the music on the Control album. Janet didn't write a single note. Btw, Jam and Lewis wrote the lyrics for the album, also. They(Jimmy Jam) said that they sat down with Janet and just talked to her and allowed her to express her feelings about things happening in her life, then THEY( Jam and Lewis) sat down and wrote the album Control(music and lyrics).

Pressure

Tranet is nobody;s legend. Stiff dance moves, whispery paper thin voice, nose and boob job, several flop albums, only famous because the REAL talented Jackson (MJ the KING) put her on the map and she performs in high school gymnasiums now.

Madonna won the battle
