Björk’s Biophilia: The $800 Box Set

For the broader pop cultural population, Björk’s brilliant musical creativity is surpassed by her eccentric personal brand. Not for nothing, I guess.

To wit: Last week I was on FUSE’s Hoppus On Music to talk about the albums of the year (so far), and people started chuckling just at the windup about Biophilia and its thematic focus on nature and its attendant iPad apps. (Granted, I am hilarious.)

But if you buy into Björk’s wares, this time you can really buy into her wares. Meet Biophilia’s $800 edition. Hypebeast elaborates:

[This] strictly limited-edition, lacquered and silkscreened oak hinged lid case comes with the full Biophilia Manual as well as 10 chrome-plated tuning forks, silkscreened on one face in 10 different colors, stamped at the back, and presented in a flocked tray.

Furthermore, each fork is adjusted to the tone of each of the tracks from Biophiia and covers a complete octave in a non-conventional scale. is adjusted to the tone of each of the tracks from Biophiia and covers a complete octave in a non-conventional scale.

Imagine a studio audience’s response to that bit. There’s also a 48 page hardbound, cloth-covered and thread-sewn manual, 2 CDs, additional essays and exclusive recordings. It’s design by M/M (based in Paris).

If you want this, you have one week to order it, and also you have serious love for Björk. Her online store is taking orders only until August 12th. The album is out 9/27.

The only people that are going to buy this are :

1.) Rich folks with money to burn.

2.)Obsessive fans spending money they don't have.

Of course; charging 800 bucks a pop, there's no way she can't win.

I believe you're 100% correct. Which makes me wonder if it's even ethical to do so.

Is the craftsmanship worth $800? That's some serious cash!

I'm of two minds here. Part of me thinks this is just obscene. shake But part of me recognizes some people would behold this packaging as art, the sort of thing to which people have ascribed millions of dollars over the centuries, seeing every penny as worth it. I mean, though priceless, what is Michelangelo's David, besides an oversized whittling project? shrug

To each his own, I suppose.

If it was $100 then I would have ordered one.

For the UK equivalent of $800 I could book a hotel, buy a return train ticket and a concert ticket the next time she plays London.

Which is what I will do.

If she filled the box with top quality cigars I would think she may get more people excited.

What can you do with tuning forks? apart from annoy everyone.

Throw in a 3-night stay for two people in a cosy B&B in Reykjavic, including a traditional Icelandic breakfast, and a walking tour of some of most stunning fjords in the region, and we'll call it a deal. nod

lol Yeah, though that would cost a lot more than $800.

And would you really want porridge, liver and cheese for breakfast??

lol

It'd be a bargain! And a lovely way to say thank you to her fans..... razz

For the record, I'd finish all of that 8am liver and porridge combo, just to live up to my own cosmopolitan self-image. "You sure you guys eat this every day?", I'd ask, as the last spoonful squeaked down. "Oh, yeah, we can't get enough of it", they'd reply, packing away the Rice Krispies boxes and giggling to themselves.

Yeah, but the difference is, Bjork's forkboxbook thing will probably sell out and be delivered unlike Prince's cancelled opus mess.

I don't think there's such a thing as a "traditional" Icelandic breakfast - if there is I'm sure the liver wouldn't be a part of it. lol Porridge and cod liver oil might be the closest thing to what you could call a "traditional" Icelandic breakfast - I should know, I've lived there my whole life. smile

And you're right, it would probably cost more than $800 - you would have to pay that amount for JUST the B&B (2 people for 3 nights).

Well it is if you MIX the two together, which is not the case. lol

People might have a tablespoon of cod liver oil and then eat the porridge, while maybe not the best tasting breakfast you could have, it's not really "vomitrocious" IMO.

Nowadays it's very common for Icelanders to take the cod liver oil in capsules - it's an excellent source of Omega-3 and A- and D-vitamins. nod

I ususally have one or two capsules plus special multi-vitamin tablets without A and D-vitamins in the morning myself.
