Has Lady GaGa Peaked Too Quickly? The year is 2008. Britney Spears‘ and co are still twiddling their fingers in delight over the critical and commercial success of her ‘Blackout‘ LP and the Popverse has just been introduced to wide eyed upstart Katy Perry. Armed with her Pro Girl smash ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and the Pop/Rock forward debut LP ‘One Of The Boys‘, Ms. Perry was undeniably 2008’s breakout sensation. Well, at least we thought she was….
From the belly of Interscope Records came Lady GaGa. The younger, more avant garde but arguably less original alternative to Gwen Stefani. Initially finding it difficult to make major impact on domestic ground, the former underground sensation found her first commercial home in both the Canadian and Australian market with her debut single ‘Just Dance’. Then the rest as they say is history. In just three years, Ms.’PokerFace’ has acquired an army of international fans who seemingly have enough disposable income to purchase whatever she releases when she releases it. Surpassing the critical and commercial achievements of artists that she herself was inspired by. Scoring more Platinum and Gold singles than any artist to have debuted within the last six years. Picking up where Madonna and Michael Jackson left off to have her music videos as celebrated and anticipated as the albums they are in support of. As well as this, with over 12 million records sold by her first album ‘The Fame‘, 5 million records to date for ‘Born This Way’ as well as the gargantuan feats achieved by stand alone EP ‘The Fame Monster’, she is one of the fastest selling artists of all time.
Ever eager to know what’s on your mind, we here at That Grape Juice want to know… Do you Lady GaGa has peaked too quickly?

Say what we will about Gaga. But she isn't freaking Hootie And The Blowfish. No, I don't think Gaga has peaked too soon at all.

Nah she ain't peaked. | |

I think The Fame Monster is her best record as of right now, but her peak/pinnacle has yet to come.

With each successive release, her artistic vision expands. I think Born This Way is a fantastic album and improves upon everything she's done before. You can't even listen to The Fame and BTW back to back and not be amazed at the growth. She's got a long road ahead of her.

She's not peaked, but she should take a LONG break between Born This Way and her next album.

I do think she needs to take a mini break after the Born This Way Ball (which kicks off later this year) I'm sure she's gonna do over 200 shows for it also

Gaga is interesting, but some artists' fame should only have a period of about 2-10 years. So if she's reached her peak already, well, that's not surprising. Not everyone is qualified to have a "music career" for several decades, especially these days when hardcore fanbases are extremely difficult to achieve and maintain. Really, lasting longer than 15 years is not even realistic anymore. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

It seems like R.Kelly is the only exception to the rule. But since he doesn't crossover to mainstream pop culture too often, not too many music fans would notice.
It's also too easy to say Madonna has pasted her peak more than one but yet her career has last three decades thus far.

I see Gaga as a Paula Abdul/NKOTB/BSB/Ricky Martin type of act. Someone who quickly blew up in the closing years of the decade, and provided something flashy and colorful for those in the mood for something "fun". Then after a few big hit albums and obscene overexposure, people tire of them. They start being looked at as caricatures of that period the blew up in and become commercially uncool as the new decade begins to define itself. Already I'm sensing a subtle apathy/backlash brewing where Gaga's name is concerned. Few can get away with her kind of ridiculous and OTT shtick for the long haul; it begins to look too silly after a while. Once the 10's start to develope its own personality in another year or so, I think Gaga is gonna be toast.

I wasn't talking about artists from the 80s and 90s. Just new ones now, specifically those whose success/popularity started post-2005.

There's as many examples of people fizzling out as there are of continuing success. Madonna's always been OTT, Michael jackson and Prince have always been OTT, Janet Jackson and Eminem and Beyonce and Jay Z and Outkast are all OTT and maintain their success.
I don't think Gaga has anything to worry about any time soon and if she keeps her ear to the ground, she will maintain her success.
You wanna see Paula Abdul? Go buy a Kesha record. Ricky Martin? Yeah, his female counterpart (and co-dueter) Christina Aguilera already took his spot.

I think she's really talented but dreadfully overexposed (and I actually LIKE her!). I think I blame LG's management for this. They have basically hijacked her creativity and image in this lame attempt for her to be the next Madonna. I think her handlers/mgr's are trying too hard to rip off everything they can from Madonna and find a way to put that into LG's gimmick, it's really tiresome. I wish her the best but she's doing too much too soon though. Didn't some member of KISS say something to that effect on the Howard Stern show or something a while back? They told her that she was doing too much too soon... Trolls be gone!

I think Lady Gaga's better days are behind her. She peaked with her last album and is coasting with this one. By itself, her BTW album has peaked and is already out of the top 10. When all is said and done, I bet it doesn't sell as much as Fame/Monster did. What goes up has to come down and usually the quicker they rise, the quicker they fall. No one in Gaga's camp anticipated boring ol' Adele coming along and upstaging her, and making her look a bit trivial. She's oversatured the public her junk and the public are now getting sick of her. Her backlash is inevitable and it won't be pretty. I can see her lingering and continuing to perform and release albums, but her days as being one of pop music's biggest stars I think is on the wane.

I think that she is on the decline but coming from a 12mil seller in this environment is hard to duplicate. I think that she is terribly overexposed and should take a break once she starts to tour. However, i know some artists are afraid of being away thinking that their spot will be taken.
I don't particularly care for born this way although I do like edge of glory, marry the night .
It may be a bit too early to make pronoucements on her but it does feel a bit like the air is starting to come out of her ballon.

In terms of exposure and sales she may have peaked, however that's not to say she doesn't have a long career of success ahead of her... You'd really have to wait for her next album to make a better judgement. 2012: The Queen Returns

She's still very early into her career, so it's hard to say but it doesn't seem like the singles on "Born This Way" are doing as well as the ones on "The Fame"/"The Fame Monster" did. Only "Born This Way" was a big hit. The rest of the singles from the album have pretty much come and gone for the most part. "Edge of Glory" has done well enough but not as well as her previous singles.
I do feel that a backlash against Gaga is inevitable. I think many people are already getting tired of her and are over her, but then again, as it's been said before she's only on her second album. I could be completely wrong. We'll see what happens with her next album. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

This, exactly. She's in danger of becoming overexposed. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

It's pretty phenomenal what she's achieved in less than 3 years. She's been a very busy lady.

I agree....... Gaga is a joke just waiting to be laughed at. I'll be laughing the hardest when they rip her new one. Stevie Wonder = EARTH

i think she's talented enough to stick around awhile... being a musician herself she could make a more laid back singer songwriter album if she wanted. the thing is she'll have to continue to grow and throw a curveball every now and then which she's capable of doing. she's already proved she doesn't need the tehno-crap sound to be a good artist but i think that's just what she feels like doing right now. to me its completely up to her to determine her own longevity. i mean... if britney spears can stick around by being a lip-singer.....

Sales wise she did. The Fame/Fame Monster were her peaks commercially. Just as Thriller and Purple Rain for their respective artists. Otoh, in terms of her artistic peak? No, I don't believe she has reached that yet.
