Is Jill Scott Racist & Homophobic? I just saw a tweet that she wrote about a couple she saw, where she was asking why women marry gay men? How does she know the man was gay just from looking at them? Ok maybe that doesn't make her homophobic but I would say she's ignorant. I also know someone that saw her in concert in the Bay Area a few years ago that said she spoke out very candidly against interracial couples and about black people that don't wear their hair naturally. This chick is starting to piss me off. I'm not even a fan of her music and I certainly don't want to hear her ignorant comments about life either. What do you guys think?

I don't think thats homophobic... your telling me you never encountered a couple where the dude looked kind of gay? Hell a friend of mines dates a guy who looked like a very effeminate bottom. And I kept telling her to watch out cause he might be gay or bi... And he was gay. People make snap judgements all the time. Can't be politically correct all the time. You can look gay. nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, she's going off of stereotypical bullshit. The rest of what she's said, I don't agree with either, but to be fair, she's entitled to her opinion, even if it stinks.
Why do you put yourself through the agitation of going to her blog when you know you're not a fan and get pissed off at the stuff she says? "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I actually read it on Conceteloop.com but i've heard her say ignorant things on race in the past too. I guess you're right, that she is entitled to her own opinion. This is the other side of freedom of speech I guess....

Did you see her latest tweets, where she's asking about open relationships and is wondering if she could be in one?

Apparently you do, since you started this thread about it. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Leave Jill Scott alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Seriously everytime a celebrity makes a statement that doesn't 100% endorse the gay community they get smacked with the homophobe label. Not everyone agrees with everyone on everything! Life would be hella boring if it was that way. Opinions shouldn't carry so much weight after all you only have to hear them if you ask about them. I LOVE her music... have tickets to see her tomorrow night. I'm sure glad I read this thread before I went and enjoyed myself.

Not sure if she's homophobic or not. Don't much care either. But as relationships go, I'm none too bowled over by Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

But you know what? You have been able to make your relationship work. A lot of women get into situations where they think that they "can handle it" or "can change him" and get a rude awakening.

No, I didn't but if that's what she wants to do that's fine. How would she feel though if people were judging her for that?

Granted. I've seen that sort of thing, and it hurts all parties involved.
It just seems (assuming Scott's intent is to alleviate that hurt) she'd be better off genuinely addressing the concern first with women and gay men who actually do find themselves in the situation, 'cause some of us navigate our relationships in ways that would downright school our more conventionally wed peers (e.g. Jill Scott). That, rather than launching a charged, open and probably rhetorical question into the Twittersphere based on little more than apparent assumptions and stereotypes. That just strikes me as the sort of sloppiness that stokes flames rather than puts them out. [Edited 8/6/11 7:09am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Very true.
Twitter seems to be the avenue where people just unleash whatever is on their minds. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Jill Scott has to the artist behind the most boring music every created...
even if she were outright homophobic I wouldn't be as offended as I am by her bland albums. 2012: The Queen Returns

Yep. And I guess everyone is entitled to that processing. Makes me wonder, though, if folk will regret having done it so publicly, permanently, and with such possible unintended effects 5 or 10 years down the line. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

You don't get it. There are two types of people within AND outside of the industry that anyone with celebrity status can NOT afford to piss off in the 21st century with their political/social/religious views:
1. Ashkenazi Jews (especially the ones that are pro-Zionist) 2. LGBTs
The moment a celebrity does so, their career may potentially be good as f***ed.

What does LGBT mean? | |

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. I'm guessing it's an alliance of the "alternative sexes" though I see the community is kinda split on issues.

In fairness to Dancerella, the homophoba within most black folks worldwide is the worst. If Jill Scott is one of them, then it's fair game for her to get called out for it by whoever.

You know what? Fuck Jill Scott.....literally [I really do want to ], But she is racist if you ask me. I've heard her say stuff like that before, so I don't buy her music. The whole "gay" topic she mentioned is true though...look at Liza Minnelli, Star Jones, Terry McMillan, Jackée Harry {& Maybe Monique}, They have all been married to gay dudes...... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

First off, who cares. I am not a fan of Jill Scott's music at all. <amy of my family and friends are, but for me - it doesn't work. I agree with her in many respect, but I am not racist or homophobiac. I personally don't care for interracial dating or marriages - but if floats your boat, sail on. I think it is an outrage for a homosexual male to perp and play the games of denial, confusion, etc. and date women and marry them, i.e. Eddie Long. I do recognize that in the Black community, the vast majority think homosexuality is morally wrong (based on their Christian beliefs - but funny thing, that is the only thing they blast about, all other things they cherry pick or willingly ignore, like eating pork and pre-marital sex). I think people should keep it real. If you are a homosexual, do you and fugg what the other say or think. No matter how much they hate it, they can't change it. Sexuality can't be changed. To me gay is a lifestyle, and not every homosexual leads the lifestyle - but at the end of the day, what someone else eats does not make me shit! People also need to realize the definition of racist. I do not think Blacks in America can be racist. Prejudiced, yes, racist no. We are not in control of the institutions that make determinations in people's lives, i.e. military, banking, insurance, real estate and the judiciary. A racist by their hatred of another race can make decisions that keep that race from prospering. Eleven per cent of a population is not controlling or defining anything. Jill Scott certainly isn't. BTW before the fact hounds leap out, Barack Obama is not Black, he is bi-racial, period! Music Royalty in Motion

I happen to like her music... A lot. I don't find it it "bland", as someone called it. To me, it's "mellow". When I want to shake my ass, I listen to something else. I don't know her as a person, so I can't comment on that. But everyone has an opinion; we won't agree with all of them, and some will offend us. Such is life.
While you guys work it out on here tonight, I'll be at her concert...

I really just shake my head at these men who think they are pulling a one up on society while they are strutting their stuff so hard it makes me look like a football athlete compared.
