Misogyny & Parliament Funkadelic While I love Funkadelic, I find the misogyny in some of the lyrics to be a problem. I bought Standing on the Verge of Getting It On yesterday and was surprised to hear:
"A luscious bitch she is, true But it's not nice to fool mother nature
I really don't need to hear "bitch" and "ho" in the first 15 seconds of my album. And of course there's "No Head No Backstage Pass" from Let's Take It to the Stage. Even The Mothership Connection has "Handcuffs":
"If I have to keep you barefoot and pregnant Oh, to keep you here in my world (Lay down, girl) lay down and take off-a your shoes Cause I'm a-gonna do to you What it is I got to do"
Is anybody else troubled by this? And what P-Funk albums do you recommend if I don't want to hear any misogyny?

Funkadelic is party music. You're taking it way too seriously. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

Um, how is it a party if I'm offended?
Keep in mind that I enjoy the hell out P-Funk generally. Their best combines humor, dance, and a serious side. Right now I'm listening to Funkentelechy:
"When you're taking every kind of pill (deprogram, program) Nothing seems to ever cure your ill"
"Funk is a non-profit organization!"
Great stuff!

You so crazy,
Anyhoo, this was recorded before the PC era just like Richard Pryor's albums. That should be taken into consideration.
Also unlike a lot of today's music, it's not like that's what came out of their mouths on every other song.
I think the main problem with the usage of various non-PC words is the tendency to overuse by those with limited vocabulary and limited creativity. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Exactly. It was a different time obviously. People could say ANYTHING then. Now you're being put under a microscope if you even say anything similar to what the bruhs at Funkadelic were saying then.

um, the PC era? how is it a PC era when so many songs overuse non-PC words, to use your phrase?

What makes this the PC era is that the usage of certain terms is commented on far more frequently than in the past, and the fact that the overuse of those terms is condemned in certain circles.
Just as there are so many artists guilty of this overuse, there's also a much larger backlash than in previous eras.
Pryor used the n-word frequently and not much was said about it at the time until he himself retired the word from his act after visiting Africa. Since then there has been a growing consensus against it's usage even though some artists still insist on using it. The attitude toward certain words has changed in the PC era even if some didn't get the memo. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

If this is misogyny then just about every rapper in the business is a misogynist.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly!!!
And didn't someone else sing about having sex with his sister?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Doesn't that same guy also have a song called Irresistable Bi*ch?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He also committed domestic violence under a character in "Bob George".
And my favorite artist did an S&M track and was all "bitch are you cumming?!" So if you're gonna get upset at anyone being misogyny, might as well name every male artist that ever recorded in tthe history of recorded music back to the blues era.

....and keep in mind this is a site for a man that wrote a song called "Irresistible Bitch". And starred in a mega hit blockbuster movie that had misogyny all throughout it (even though he did not write it).
Not saying George is right, but at the same time I try not take some of his stuff too seriously.

Yeah like for example I don't see no tightwad getting upset over George having a song called "Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch In Him" dedicated to a gay member of Funkadelic's crew.

there is so much misogyny in music. people just like to make an example of like funk, hip hop and or rap. why? well i'll leave that to you!
how come no one complains about the misogyny in hair metal, heavy metal and even rock ! not to mention the female chauvinistic attitudes in the pop world.

How do you even get offended by that? Seriously?
Look, it's the equivalent of someone saying you're a 'bad bitch'. It's actually a compliment and not an insult.
If you're that easily offended, you probably should just stay away from p-funk along with a whole lot of other stuff because you're gonna stay constantly pissed off. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

IMO, if one digs deeply into P-Funks VERY broad catalog...
They frequently are making some kind of "socio-political" statement....(drugs, laws, relationships, etc).
Their habit of doing it often with puns & witty symbolism (kind of a "wink-wink, chuckle" kinda humor) doesn't detract from the seriousness of the subject matter that GC & crew have covered.
P-Funk will move yer ass....but almost always intended to be provocatively thoughtful, too at some level.
I too, have been alternately "shocked..offended...had my mind changed" by a bunch of P-Funk.
