Do you have a preference? Rudy is the Master, but in this instance, I kinda like the feel and sound of the DuNann recording.......

I like them both.
DuNann has a tendency to isolate the leader/soloist in one channel and put the rest of the band in the opposite channel.

Took a few listens to get used to. It does give the recording a different dimension.

I see. I thought it almost seemed to have a more intimate feel, but I'm probably hearing the separation....

wink Hey, Shaolin!!!

well actually, tA is the expert --I'm just a fan...but I would say it depends on what kind of sounds you like from Herbie ...Overall, I think Maiden Voyage and Speak Like A Child are the best places to start, but that's just my personal opinion.

Anyone else want to opine on this?

I know that a lot of funk and electric music fans start in the 70's with Headhunters, Thrust and Man -Child, and then move backwards and forwards from there...

I'm a true believer in starting at the top with artists like Herbie Hancock.

As a warning, based on what you've indicated you're going to start with, the 60s catalog is his pre-Funk period.

However it gives you insight into the tremendous harmonic/melodic foundation which is at his core throughout.

In addition to the good suggestions paligap gave, here's a sampling of his early work with some tracks you might recognize.

...Watermelon Man (from Takin' Off - 1962)

...And What If I Don't (from My Point Of View - 1963)

...Mimosa (from Inventions & Dimensions - 1964)

...Cantaloupe Island (from Empyrean Isles - 1964)

I know "Watermelon Man" from David Benoit. I'm a fan of David's version, but it doesn't sound nearly as good as Herbie's. I really enjoy soul/funk/r&b music that's why I thought I'd start with the '70s. I'm a fan of what's considered "smooth jazz", more so than the traditional jazz. But I can get get an album from the '60s to get more insight....and maybe my mind/taste will change biggrin

Thanks again.
