Yeah, I never understood that either. What if you ship 1 million units and 5 copies sell? That means you're platinum??

Shipped copies are all that is ever counted, in terms of gold, platinum, etc. The sale is from the record company to the RETAILER. Sales to the CONSUMER are completely impossible to accurately count (too many retailers/outlets), but the charts are a decent indicator of what's moving out the door and what's not.

Yeah that's why I don't get why people act like what's going on with Beyonce and Britney with their albums is something brand new. lol

People are just frustrated/shocked about the dismal sales. You expect that these celebrities, given their obscene amount of sheer presence in the media/world, to sell huge numbers. Who knew Adele's 21 would hit 8m? It's not like more than 1 single has done anything here in the states, right? I might be wrong about that, but I would've expected Born This Way and Femme Fatale to be up in the 8m range, not languishing around 2m.

I know lol I guess when it comes to pop music like the ones of Beyonce, Britney and Gaga, you think they sold more. Oh, and I don't think Gaga's album is even certified YET. hmmm

I bought Beyonce's first two albums and I'd would like to see her live. We simply laid out the facts to prove that her latest project isn't a million seller. "Certified platinum" means your label sent 1M albums to distributors-- nothing more. Adele is kicking her ass salewise.

The RIAA needs to do away with the practice of issuing certifications based on net shipments after returns. In the age of Soundscan, it's perceived as a joke.

You'd think they stop after 1991...

I know Femme Fatale was certified platinum that was my point, that it was certified platinum at around 520k sales similar to Beyonce's '4' without actually scanning 1mil copies as was jennifer hudson's 'I remember me' getting a gold certification at 330k or so without actually selling 500k where it remains with sales around 380k to date.

Gotcha, I mis-read. Stupid stoner goggles.

Cool Beans!! lol lol

Not true. After 1991, the Soundscan era was introduced and every cd has a bar code. It is very accurate how much a c sells if it is legitimately scanned at a retailer. there are some variances in the SS total re christian stores but eventually they are counted.

Now, pre-SoundScan ere i.e <1991, your statement is correct hence a dependence on the RIAA certs to determine how much an artist sold.

Every legitimate retailer participates in Soundscan and everytime a cd is sold, it's scanned and that info is fed to SS.

If you just go by certs now, some labels overship granted stores can return cds, there still remain some artists who are overshipped and have lots of cds on the market.

Adele has sold 8mil WW not in the US. She's sold around 2.7 to 2.8mil in the US which is still astonishing and hasn't left top 5 since '21' release which is even more of a feat.

Britney's stats re cd sales doesn't surprise me. She lips and she doesn't do much promo. she basically didn't even do WW promo , just some phone/ print interviews.

Gaga- She's around 1.5-1.6mil in the US with 1.15mil first week sales with around 450k or so fueled by the $.99 sale at Amazon. I tend to think she is a tad overexposed as she has promoted herself and her music everywhere for the last 2-3yrs. Also, she had some backlash with 'Judas' etc. We'll see how 'You and I' does.

R&b is just a mess with no real break out act and no crossover artist. I consider Rihanna a pop artist first with a few urban hits so I discount her. Jennifer Hudson's cd sort of flopped as did Jazmine sullivan's. No one is really buying urban music, they must be illegally downloading ish.

Chris Brown is an exception. He is having a banner year with hits upon hits and collabo upon collabo.
