Artists that you used to love but can't stand anymore

I don't have too many of these but a few come to mind. The ones that you look back on and are like, "What the fuck was I thinking?" Enya is the first one I think of. I was really into her for awhile when I was in New Age mode. God only knows why. When I want to relax now, I put on Miles Davis or something. I don't feel like turning into a total vegetable when I listen to music. What are you just supposed to turn on Enya and have "instant peace"? Not gonna happen. It seems gimmicky to me now. End of rant.

Good question!

Madonna - I love the music put i've grown real tired of the person she is. Her problem stems from the people around her, no one has the guts to interview her properly for starters as its all"ohhh its Madonna on the show" Everyone treats her like a queen and that's why she acts like the spoiled ass she is.

Smashing Pumpkins - I loved their first two albums and then they released Mellon Collie and Corgan began to whine. I still got all their stuff but something definitely went amiss when that album came out.

Foo Fighters - I wouldn't say i can't stand them but i've gone off them slightly. I've not been impressed with their last two albums. Grohl is a terrific songwriter but i miss the urgency of their first two CDs.

Im sure ill think of some more!

For me it has to be The Who.

I used to love them to death. Played Tommy, Who's Next, & Live at Leeds TO DEATH back in high school.

Now its a very rare thing that I'll play a Who record, and I want to do violent things when I hear anything from Who's Next. Tommy is the only one I can listen to EVERY once-in-awhile.

I 100% agree with you in everything you said, take the words right outta my mouth.

I dig her music and I have all of her LPs but her non-stop bitchy attitude 2ward ppl makes it easy 4 her to be hated.

Brandy-I used 2 like her when I was lil' but now,,,ummm

SWV-Songs like You're The One(96 Allstar anthem) brings beautiful memories. But Coko's voice is really hurting my ears plus they she gets all the attention and they dare 2 hate Beyonce.

Usher-He really gets on my last nerve with his ugly ass and fake attitude.

Sisqo-He got big headed but what goes around comes right after.

Easy one for me: Christina A. She beat Whitney and Mariah's record in turning into a total, full of yourself bitch in less than a year and a half. Hell it took whitney about 3x as long.

Oh Cmon! It's every fucking interview! That woman is so full of her self importance and in a way its not her fault. It's the way the media treat her, they're scared of her and shes learned this. She's learned to intimidate people. Name one revealing Madonna interview?! There aren't any! It's all asslicking hero worship. When people say ohhh it was a real revealing interview its because shes chosen what to reveal. Its all calculated just like her music these days.

Madonna - up until Ray of Light. Music is very dull, despite a few great tracks, but after seeing her in concert for the first and last time in 2001, I was put off. I still own everything she's ever released and will buy new stuff for the sake of the collection, but I'll never ever obsess over her again.

MARIAH CAREY.

I can't believe no one has mentioned her yet! She was so fantastic when she first came out (Remember Vision of Love?) but now her vocals are weak and airy in EVERY SINGLE SONG and she comes off as both a ditz and a slut. (Sorry, I hate using the word "slut" but that's all I could think of!)

Now I've gone back and listened to 'I Think I Love You' and I'm not so sure. Due for a big revival I think. Is Shirley Jones still alive?

Lenny Kravitz - His first two albums were wonderful. He managed to transcend his influences, which were obvious, and make some brilliant songs. However when he released Are You Gonna Go My Way he started to sound like a pastiche of one particular artist. Circus was even worse and 5 wasnt much better. Lenny was an improvement but for me it was too late. It's a shame really but i can't listen to his music anymore without seeing the whole image thing first.

I have to admit I liked pretty much all of their stuff, but
yes, after pisces iscariot and mellon collie, I think that
Corgan imagined himself to be living in a Bram Stoker novel
like some neo-sonical vampire/18th century english poet.

But with a grunge twist. Urgh. It was all a bit too much
and then the music became a bit too slight.

Still, Mellon Collie is one of the best albums of the 90's.
I like it. The shitload of b-sides that came with it was
great too. Imagine 4 album's worht of material. Great, even
if some of it was turd.

Tricky

When he first emerged, he was like some prodigal son man,
his music was incredible and fresh and daring. I have his
albums up to "Angels with dirty faces" [which is a dog].

It just became too weird at that point. I always like the
kind of songs that sound like they're about to fall into
pieces [portishead, tricky, some of massive atack] but it
was just too much since "Angels".

People keep telling me that he's regained some sense of
cool now -seems his lack of melody and his deeply shitty
attitude were due to a food-allergy [?]- but I haven't
had the courage to buy another one of his albums just yet.

+++

Alanis Morisette

Saw her live when she first hit the scene and thought she
was great. [probably something to do with me being 17] but
since then she kind of sunk into a pool of songs that all
sound alike, and yet all suck at the same time.

She too seems to have recorded quite a good album now, but
I haven't checked it out yet.

+++

Sven Väth

Made some incredible tunes back in the mid 90's but then he
went mad and produced some terrible discs. It became a bit
too hard to keep up with where he was at. Whenever I see
him on tv or in obscure jazzy/house magazines, I can't even
get past his devil-goatee anymore. "L'Esperanza" is still
beautiful tho. And probably I should check him out again and
see what he's doing right now.

+++

Bush

Loved bush when they released their first two albums. Went
to their concerts and thought they were absolutely good.
However, it seems they're unable to write a coherent song
anymore these days. And after the Cafe Del Mar remix of
"Letting The Cables Sleep" I can't take them seriously
anymore.

+++

R Kelly

I'm ashamed to admit it, but yes, I have been an R Kelly
affiliate. Back in 1993 my best friend adored R Kelly and
she kept pressing me to listen to her tapes. And I must
admit, I liked his sound. However, aprox 200 of the exact
same sounds retreaded later, I can't stand it anymore.
Why is it so impossible these days for artists to write a
song with a decent melody and a strong hook???

Co-sign on Lenny. He just became so contrived. I just got the overall feeling that he was in the music industry not because he creating music, but because he loves what the industry brings him. He's in it for the supermodels and riding around in limos being a star. He became a poser.

Ok, I'm not loving any of these artists but I used to dig their stuff and be a supporter...

star Feminem: I bought his first album and I was feeling the album tracks like "My Fault (Mushrooms)" and "Get Down Tonight" but when the media got a hold of 'im I stopped diggin' him.

star J. Ho: she's in the media too much and she's the modern-day Puff Daddy (steal an old song, make it a hit), she wack.

star TLC: It's not that I hate them, it's just that their new stuff is wack and uninspiring. I have their first 2 records, I guess I just grew out of them.

star Snorah Jones: I was feeling her for about 12 seconds, but then the media got ahold of her and Alicia Keys-ed her, so now i can't stand her, plus she's a poor man's Alana Davis.

star Brian McKnight: after I found out he stole Meshell's Outside Your Door and gave her no credit I stopped liking him.

star Spice Girls: I used to love them when I was in 9th grade (hey, I was a freshman in HS) and I thought they had some R&B cred, but they got weak with Spiceworld.

star India.SAwrie: She's contradictory. She's all in her videos with the head-wraps and the ethnic garb talking about "I don't do this for the glitter and the gold" or whatever, but turns around and writes long articles in Essence dissing Alicia Keys and crying at the Grammy's when she didn't win. I mean, yo, if it's not all about the fame and fortune why you in the back of the Grammy's crying your eyes out. I mean, what's up India?

AMEN AMEN. I was listeing to some old Mariah today and I wondered where the old Mariah went cause I can't stand that imposter today. I also co-sign with those dogging Madonna. She used to be fun to follow but now it seems so contrived and almost desperate, especialy the talk I've heard about her new video.

For me I guess it would have to be Michael Jackson. During the 70s it was hard to find any kids who didn't like the Jackson 5 or later on The Jacksons, and of course Michael himself. The end of my fascination with Michael was probably when the "Billie Jean" single got old either in late '82 or early '83.

Outside of a couple of songs here and there from other solo albums, musically I didn't find him that enthralling anymore. And as time went on, the circus-like atmosphere that he helped to create is off-putting too.
