I'm loving this so far! Billy had such a rich talent and enduring legacy. The king of session players! Check me out and add me on:

Why do they have to make people wait until after midnight to check the "Unsung" replays? I love my '90s shows and all but come on. But I will be replying once I watch the episode.

Yeah...TV One should air the premiere and then air an encore presentation. Love "Martin" and all, but I hate staying up trying to catch an episode I missed. Glad I catched this one though. Definitely one of the best of the "Unsung" series. Check me out and add me on:

Right. Well I can wait but it's hard especially when nothing else is on.

For sure. This is the BEST episode of Unsung so far to me. I really feel sorry for all of the demons he had to deal with. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I'm still shocked he's not in. His work with the Beatles and the Stones should count for SOMETHING, right?!

I don't agree but it was an interesting episode. Don't laugh at my funk

And what you think was the best one?
I still think it's between DeBarge and Phyllis (I still watch Phyllis like crazy).

This episode of Unsung with Billy Preston was both fascinating and awfully sad to watch. I did enjoy the subjects that they interviewed from Bruce Fisher, Will Porter, Syretta Wright. You can tell they really enjoyed reminiscing about Preston's music, musical identies, breakthroughs and personal charms. Props to the producers of this show, but I would have loved to learn more about Preston's musical and interpersonal relationships with The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. For a man that was called the "Fifth Beatle" by John Lennon and George Harrison and so well thought of in the rock community, it would have been cool to celebrate that.
For a Black r&b musician in a musically segregated and racist music industry back then, to become the MOST IN-DEMAND session musician (both in the studio and on the road) is astonishing to me. I went to Wikipedia (not the most reliable but it's a source) and this dude put in some work! He was like a journeyman carpenter that always found work because of the quality of his work. I only know of Billy's solo hits, but for a man who broke so many barriers in Black music and diversified contemporary White music, he isn't mentioned with Sly Stone, James Brown, P-Funk.
The most heartbreaking segment was the part about him battling kidney disease and even after receiving the transplant, he relapsed. I'm on music kick listening to rap (Black Star, Naughty By Nature, Bad Meets Evil, Biggie to name a few) to Love Supreme. I gotta get into more of Billy's '70's records. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Yeah, I just got through watching it. Had me tearing up a little. Billie's nephew looks a lot like him. Some great songs from the seventies I haven't heard in many years had me singing along..."Nothing..from Nothing leaves Nothing/Ya gotta have something if you wanna be with me!" What a talent!
Gonna watch the Sylvester episode next... [Edited 7/25/11 21:10pm] "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Wow, I just saw it on the site. His last days... But so glad he's not suffering anymore. And it's quite shocking how it was mentioned of his sexuality. Blessed talent. Genius. RIP

I enjoyed those also, but Billy's was so much more indepth than the Barkays. Tammi's was really good also and I would rank it up there with Billy's. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

They didn't just mention his sexuality, but was up front and honest about it.
That comment made by the friend was too funny about Billy and his young thing having kids. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Never knew he was abused & basically no one helped him deal with it. Didn't know his music history was that deep, also forgot that the Brothers Johnson played with him before they got with Quincy Jones. Good episode, now I'm on the hunt for his album collection.

I saw it. Very sad. I read about his childhood sexual abuse and his drug problems but had no idea that things were that bad e.g. his arrests which included insurance fraud and (gasp) sexual assault of two men. Damn he was on a downward spiral to say the least.
Its a shame he couldn't accept counseling if for no other reason than to at least curb his drug use. Billy's spirit was broken I think. Fucking child rapists! All of them need to be killed.
That description of him on his death bed was just too much. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
