I think he smoked something called cigarillos. I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I think the character he was playing was smoking them too. The "Man With No Name" (Clint Eastwood) also had one in his mouth, although Clint said he didn't smoke anything in real life, and didn't like the cigarillos.
