Adele's "21" returns to No. 1 for an eleventh week (HDD)

From Hits Daily Double: Adele Returns to #1; Kidz Bop Kids, 3 Doors Down, DJ Khaled, 311 Debut Top 10

July 26, 2011

After a five-week absence, XL/Columbia U.K. pop diva Adele returns to the #1 spot for the 11th time since the album’s release earlier this year, adding another 76k to a total that is now past 2.7 million.

Razor & Tie’s Kidz Bop 20, the latest in its cottage industry of adolescents covering the hits of the day, debuts at #2 with 67k. Universal Republic Mississippi rockers 3 Doors Down’s Time of My Life debuts at #3, while Cash Money hip-hop star DJ Khaled’s We the Best Forever bows at #5, sandwiching Columbia’s Beyonce in the #4 slot.

ATO veteran skate-punk thrashers 311’s Universal Pulse is the other Top 10 newcomer at #6, followed by last week’s chart topper from Warner Bros. Nashville’s Blake Shelton (#7), Broken Bow’s resilient Jason Aldean (#8), Shady/Interscope’s Eminem-Royce Da 5”9” rap collabo Bad Meets Evil (#9) and Hollywood’s Selena Gomez & the Scene (#10).

The late Universal Republic Brit soul singer Amy Winehouse’s Grammy-winning Back to Black scores 22k over the weekend, good to re-enter at #14. The album had been #1 on iTunes, with her debut album, Frank, at #3 for most of the week. It will be interesting to see how the album will do after a full seven days in the marketplace.

New Top 50 entries include Suburban Noize’s Kottonmouth Kings (#38), Eleven Seven’s Cold (#39) and Idlewild Recordings’ accordion-wielding They Might Be Giants (#41).

Acony Americana singer/songwriter Gillian Welch’s The Harrow & the Harvest shows the biggest double-digit gain (#46-34, +34%), followed by Capitol/EMI’s Katy Perry (#24-17, +17%), Startime/Columbia’s Foster the People (#34-31, +15%) and Interscope’s Lady Gaga (#13-11, +13%).

Hitting retail this week are Capitol Nashville act Eric Church, Universal Republic’s Kelly Rowland, eOne’s Wu-Tang Clan, Def Jam/IDJ’s Frank Ocean, Surfdog Records’ Joss Stone and Time-Life Music’s Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business album.

I've been saying for years, the reason for bad sales these days is a result of bad music. Good music, like Adele, gets sales. Crap, like everything else, doesn't.

I'm not a fan but I love seeing an album with legs. Most albums that debut at number one quickly fall off the charts. It's nice to see something have staying power.

I can't get into Adele's music for some reason. I love "Rollin Deep" but was not impressed with "21" overall, it just didn't do much for me.

It's nice to see someone with actual talent having success though. Her voice is damn good. Can't hate on that.

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

Its kinda sad that the Grammys have turned into a popularity contest rather than rewarding music and artists that put out music. Beyonce has been given won a shit load of grammys over the years for putting out garbage. The prestige of the grammy has GREATLY gone down but we will see what will happen this coming year, its going to be interesting.

Adele has gained alot of popularity with this album because it is an album that has been way better artistically than her peers and it seems the public realizes it.

I am just glad that a FEMALE singer has finally been rewarded for her MUSIC not gimmicks, looks, etc... the popularity of Adele has been SOLELY because of her MUSIC which I am greatly happy about. I am not sure how much this is going to last though but I appreciate for this moment in time we can appreciate talent being embraced by mainstream without all that other nonscense.

She is a great example of how all that other stuff is really not that important and that the MUSIC/TALENT really is.

Actually, i'm surprised how "well" her album is doing. I really thought it would flop, but without a hit it's still in the top 10. I'm happy though, it's a great album.

She sold on her status. I could see her album doing well over singles though "Best Thing I Never Had" is doing alright.

Entertainer

Adele's cd sold on word of mouth initially and nothing substitutes for good old fashion word of mouth promo. I predict her sweepBeing the grammys. Perhaps Beyonce will get something from the r&b side but truthfully there is competition from both the males and females there and i hope that NARAS doesn't just 'give' it to her again.

Still can't get over Single Ladies wining for best female vocal!

The songs on 21 are pretty corny, with a few exceptions (Rollin' is an amazing single). But people are responding to the sincerity of that voice - and to the fact that she doesn't seem like she's chasing past pioneers (coughGagacough).

I really like 19, I sorta kinda respect 21, and, overall, I pay all props to Adele's triumph. bow

I *should* like Adele's music. In theory, I do have respect for her.

But I just don't wanna listen to her album. lol

Amy Winehouse wasn't popular for her looks. It was that voice, that voice, that voice.

Weird typing 'was.'

I think The Black Keys album "Brother" is better.

Adele doesn't pick the greatest songs but she does pick songs she can sing the hell out of.
