One of my least favorite Phyllis songs. Not as bad as "Riding the Tiger" or "Goddess of Love". "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

There was a reason why Barry Manilow only produced that one song for her. That was not the direction she wanted to go in and Clive wasn't too thrilled over the song, either.

That's funny you say that because in her documentary it was said that Clive had hooked Phyllis up with Barry to do the song, which was way too pop-oriented for Phyllis' tastes anyways.

Not one of my favorties by Ms. Hyman but I can listen to it. In fact if someone else had sung this song I probably would hate it, her singing this song saved it. Barry Manilow, I don't like his music or his producing. Sap. |

Yeah that's true. Maybe that's why they only worked on one song.

The irony is,Barry produced this song for Phyllis,it was supposed to be her big 'pop' breakthrough but it went nowhere.A year later,Clive arranges for Barry to produce an album for Dionne Warwick and it becames the most successful album of her career.
Phyllis always seemed to have that kind of bad luck She lost out on many 'hit' songs that went to other artists.James Mtume and Reggie Lucas produced her 1979 'You Know How To Love Me' album and it did reasonably well. But because she pissed them off, they refused to work with her again and went into the studio with Stephanie Mills."I Never Knew Love Like This Before" became a massive hit for Stephanie....exactly the type of pop breakthrough that Phyllis was craving.

That's what was so strange. It seemed that for every near-pinnacle she reached, she never fully got there because of what you described. Sad. |

Phyllis sabatoged herself a lot. She was proud, pig-headed and bipolar. She challenged Clive at every opportunity and that's why he always treated her records the way he did. Although I thought most of her Arista output was routine and uninspired, if she had of done what Clive expected of her, she could have had the career she deserved. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! At one point,Phyllis was a priority at Arista.Clive was determined to make her a superstar but when she didn't do exactly what he suggested,he turned his attention to Whitney Houston. They say that Phyllis resented Whitney, for this reason.
